The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 1246: Chapter 151: God Said: Let There Be Light_2

For university students, although the citizens often complain about these unrestrained young people, most of the time, they mainly offer encouragement.

Because who knows if the restless youngsters we see today might become influential figures in Europe someday?

As the best university in all of Germany, the University of Gottingen has always produced great figures, Gottingen always produces great figures!

Even if this doesn’t bring them any tangible benefits, simply as a topic for casual conversation, it brings them satisfaction.

Thus, as always, when the citizens saw Ohm’s lecture pause, they spontaneously applauded to cheer him on, hoping he could draw strength from their applause.

”Go for it! Doctorate candidate, once you overcome this hurdle, you can kiss the bronze statue of the Goose Girl.”

”And the doctoral parade carriage, too!”

”Old Hanks swears to God, if you pass today, all the flowers you offer to the Goose Girl are free!”

”You represent not just yourself, but our Gottingen!”

Although nearly 20 years have passed since Doctor Ohm graduated, and he’s not facing an academic defense as a doctorate candidate, this does not stop him from feeling the genuine emotion conveyed through these words.

Even though he’s only been here for about a month, Gottingen has completely embraced him, holding him tightly in its arms.

Just as Hastings School Director says: Gottingen is a place of freedom, openness, and inclusivity; it belongs to all who aspire to live for ’academia’.

Like a tidal wave, the enthusiastic applause dispelled the chill of the German morning, resonating in Ohm’s ears and touching his heart.

Ohm took a deep breath and rubbed his heated eyelids.

When he reopened his eyes, all trace of hesitant spots vanished, leaving only determination.

His gaze again swept across the audience, capturing the familiar yet unfamiliar faces.

Just as the citizens said, at this moment, he was not only representing himself, not just clearing his own reputation, but representing John Gauss, William Weber, Friedrich Strohmer... and most importantly, Sir Arthur Hastings, who brought him here from the small town in Bavaria.

Today, he, George Simon Ohm, must protect the academic reputation of the University of Gottingen with unwavering resolve!

His previously blocked thoughts opened in an instant, and countless experimental data recorded through the countless nights flooded his mind like snowflakes.

Almost in an instant, it was as if he received divine inspiration.

Ohm stood upright, and finally, his well-projected voice was heard on stage.

”Esteemed academic colleagues:

It is an honor to stand here and share with you my explorations and discoveries in the field of electric current research over the past few years.

The theme I will present today is summarized as ’Mathematical Calculation of Current’, a work attempting to describe the laws of current conduction in the language of mathematics.

First, I want to start with the most basic concepts.

As we know, electricity is a powerful yet mysterious invisible force.

However, when we try to understand and control this force, mathematics becomes our language.

Mathematics not only helps us quantify observed phenomena but also provides the ability to predict the unknown.

During my research, I found that the flow of current in conductors follows certain basic principles.

I attempted to measure the relationship between current intensity and voltage through a series of experiments and based on this established a simple mathematical model. This model indicates that the current intensity is directly proportional to voltage, and the proportionality constant is the reciprocal of resistance...”

As time passed, Ohm became more immersed in the lecture on stage.

For Ohm, who spent many years as a teacher at middle schools, giving academic reports has never been difficult.

Explaining theorems to high school students is far more challenging than explaining them to seasoned professors.

And today, Ohm not only wanted to prove his capability to the European scientific community but wanted to educate every audience member present.

No matter if one is a janitor or a washerwoman, in George Ohm’s class, no student is allowed to leave without understanding the lesson.

He first introduced his academic report thoroughly from start to finish, then promptly moved into the questioning session.

Standing at the center of the stage, Ohm loudly asked: ”Are there any questions?”

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw a row of arms shoot up eagerly behind Humboldt, the president of the Berlin Academy of Sciences.

It was evident, many intended to make his life difficult.

But Ohm disregarded these individuals, directly raising his hand to call upon one of the high school students standing at the back listening to the lecture.

”That young gentleman, is there something you don’t understand?”

The high school student initially raised his hand with a mindset to try, but didn’t expect Ohm would genuinely call his name.

He was first embarrassed into silence, but then amidst the coaxing from his companions, he asked blushingly: ”Sir, what is current, and what are voltage and resistance?”

This statement immediately drew laughter among the citizens, some teasing, others amused.

”It’s certainly too challenging for high school students to grasp the doctorate’s research field.”

”But that’s nothing to worry about. If you don’t ask now, when will you? If he clarifies these matters now, this young lad might attend Gottingen in the future.”
