The Shadow of Great Britain

Chapter 1238: Chapter 48: Foreign Office Vermin (3)

Schneider looked at Arthur, his eyes gradually widened, then suddenly he grabbed Arthur’s hand and shook it vigorously: ”My dear Arthur, you always have such foresight. In this light, he indeed has a reason to live on. He must know Mazzini’s address in London. If we forge his handwriting to send a letter to Mazzini, and indicate in the letter that part of the funds was intercepted by the French, it would be even better.”

Arthur waved his hand and said: ”That’s not the only brilliant part. The most brilliant thing is, Mr. Garibaldi is a sailor; he can’t rely on the pen for a living like Mazzini. Therefore, after the revolution’s failure, he plans to sail while raising revolution funds. But since the Kingdom of Sardinia and Austria, France, Prussia, Russia, and other countries have signed extradition treaties, his wish to sail in Europe is almost impossible...”

Upon hearing this, Schneider’s eyes lit up: ”That’s easy! We’ll send him to America, it would be better if he and his comrades never come back.”

After speaking, Schneider also took out his shining Foreign Office badge from his pocket: ”See the lion and unicorn on it? With this, even Metternich cannot demand to inspect my carriage in Germany.”

”I understand what you mean.” Arthur chuckled softly: ”But just to be safe, I think you’d better go along with the Duke of Sussex.”

Schneider, who had just caught his breath and intended to take a sip of beer, spat it all over the wall upon hearing the Duke of Sussex’s name: ”What? You’re saying His Grace is also in Gottingen now?”

Arthur took a handkerchief from his pocket to wipe the beer-stained lapel: ”August, I thought you knew who was on the invitation list for the Electromagnetism conference across Europe.”

Schneider pondered uneasily for a moment, but after some thought, he realized that Arthur’s idea was bad, yet it was an absolutely safe option.

Though the chance of German police inspecting his carriage was negligible, what if he ran into someone clueless?

If he exited with the Duke of Sussex, as long as the other party wasn’t blind, merely seeing the Duke’s grand procession should signal that this convoy wasn’t to be checked.

Schneider weighed up the feasibility of this plan.

But as Arthur saw it, since Schneider was already considering it, he would eventually agree.

Thus, the main issue at hand was no longer the situation of Garibaldi and others but another matter.

Arthur took out a German newspaper from his small bag and pushed it in front of Schneider: ”Even if we clear Viscount Palmerston’s suspicions, from a police perspective, if someone’s life suddenly becomes affluent, and they start spending lavishly, it’s likely because they just did something illegal. Therefore, we must find a plausible channel for one’s life to become wealthy. August, you should know that I’m in good relations with Mr. Lionel Rothschild; he often gives me financial advice.”

Arthur’s words abruptly interrupted Schneider’s previously smooth thoughts; his body, trembling with fear and anxiety, calmed down, and a kind smile, usually seen only when spending at Nightingale Mansion, appeared on the face of this assistant undersecretary.

”Oh, Arthur, why didn’t you mention this earlier? What has Mr. Rothschild told you?”

”Hmm...” Arthur pretended to ponder for a long time: ”Lionel told me many things, but you know I study history, not economics, so I only remembered one sentence.”

”What sentence?” Schneider leaned forward slightly, his mouth corners upturned, fearing to miss the secret to wealth.

Arthur raised his glass to lightly clink with his: ”The 18th century was the century of canals, and the 19th century is the century of railroads!”
