The Shadow of Great Britain

Arthur laughed and raised an eyebrow, “Louis, what kind of illusion made you think that Britain’s Foreign Office operates entirely above board?

Not only does the Foreign Office have spies, the Treasury has spies, and the Home Office has its own independent network of informants.

Although all are involved in domestic intelligence, each focuses on different aspects.

Of course, the Royal Navy and the Army have their own systems too, but those are mostly responsible for foreign intelligence, so I wasn’t deeply involved with them.”

“Even the Home Office has its own system?” Louis smacked his forehead, “Don’t they already have Scotland Yard?”

Arthur nodded, “Yes, but Scotland Yard is still a new department, the Home Office has a much longer history than Scotland Yard.

Before the establishment of Scotland Yard, they had to handle intelligence themselves.”

Louis asked, “Do you still think it was Valevsky who did this?”

Arthur shook his head, “I don’t think it was him.

If he were passionate about protecting Poland, he wouldn’t have sent someone to shoot me.

Moreover, as a bastard, killing you wouldn’t grant him the Bonaparte Family’s inheritance.

However, just because he lacks a motive doesn’t mean others wouldn’t use his name to command the Polish.”

“The Polish assassin, Mr.

Korwatzek, had participated in the Warsaw Uprising, and he is also a friend of Mr.

Valevsky.

If we assume that he is a Polish Bonapartist, perhaps the Russians threatened him with Mr.

Valevsky’s life to make a big scene in Liverpool.”

“From the past few days’ newspapers, it’s evident that due to the assassination, those Britons inclined to support the Poles are no longer as steadfast.

While the Russians are currently dealing with a setback concerning Belgium’s independence on one front, they are also busy managing the aftermath in Poland.

Disturbing things internally in Britain now, drawing government and Parliament’s attention away from the Polish issues, would certainly please them.”

Upon hearing this, Great Dumas considered, “You might be onto something, the Russians definitely have a strong motive.

But how can we get evidence of their involvement?”

Arthur just shook his head, “Alexander, this is no longer just a public safety case, but a diplomatic and political issue.

If the evidence indeed points to the Russians, whether the investigation results can be disclosed is still a concern.

Moreover, I don’t know what the Cabinet’s stance is on this matter.

Before understanding what the ministers think, I’d better investigate other possibilities.”

Upon hearing this, Louis immediately understood what Arthur meant.

“You mean, even if the Russians did it, you still need to prepare a few scapegoats?”

Arthur corrected him, “Not scapegoats, but investigation results that meet the expectations of various parties.”

Great Dumas asked, “Do you already have some candidates in mind?”

Arthur flipped through a thick stack of case files in front of him, casually reciting a few names, “There are some good choices, ones the Parliament might like, ones Viscount Melbourne might favor, and of course, ones Viscount Palmeston might find appealing, and so on…”

“Who are you referring to?”

Arthur pointed at the names on the files and read them aloud, “Too many, the Liverpool Association, the East India Company, George Norton, Bernie Harrison, and so on…”

Great Dumas frowned, “Are you planning to forcefully pin this on them?”

Arthur slowly shook his finger, “Alexander, do not be mistaken.

I will investigate all directions, and all possibilities will be fairly presented to the ministers.

As for which one they choose to disclose, that is beyond my decision.”

Great Dumas asked, “So you mean to say, you’re going to let people turn a blind eye to this?”

“No, certainly not.” Arthur said, holding the file and opening the door, staring at Great Dumas, “Because, no matter who did it…

this feud has already been etched in my heart.”
