The Shadow of Great Britain

Thus, traffic in Tower Hamlets was indeed no longer congested, but the accident rate in the surrounding areas had risen steadily compared to the past.

The office was unaware of the specifics and thought we were doing quite well, so not only did they refrain from any criticism, they actually commended our work.

All I can say is, it’s good that Ledley was under my command; if he were elsewhere, he could have certainly caused trouble.

At this point, the three couldn’t help but sigh.

Tony joked, “Jones, you’re holding back Ledley’s progress.”

Jones took a snuff and said, “If I don’t hold him back, he’ll start getting in my way.

We all want to advance, but there’s got to be some sort of order.

Speaking of which, it seems that there’s been some development with the matter concerning Superintendent Hastings, haven’t you heard?”

Tony asked, “Do you mean the thing with the prosecution office for the London area?

Wasn’t that already settled early on?”

“Not just that.”

Jones, lifting his white gloved hand to cover his mouth, whispered, “I heard that the prosecution office for the London area will have one District Chief Prosecutor and four Deputy Chief Prosecutors.

The Chief Prosecutor is nominated by the Judicial Committee of the House of Lords, led by Lord Brougham, His Majesty the King’s High Chancellor, and appointed by His Majesty the King.

According to rumors, the most likely candidate for the position is the Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of London, Professor John Austin, the Queen’s Counsel.

He is, like Superintendent Hastings, highly regarded by Lord Brougham.

As for the four Deputy Chief Prosecutors, one is nominated by the Lord Chancellor’s office, one by the Home Office, one by the Britain’s Bar Association, and the last one is specially reserved for the police, that is, Scotland Yard.

Commissioner Rowan is no fool, so the police’s Deputy Chief Prosecutor will definitely be Superintendent Hastings.”

Tom asked, “Isn’t that what everyone knows?”

Jones waved his hand and said, “The important part is what comes next.

If Superintendent Hastings becomes the Deputy Chief Prosecutor, then over here at Scotland Yard…

Although the rank of Superintendent is not low, as Scotland Yard’s representative in the London prosecution office, shouldn’t he at least have the title of Assistant Commissioner?

”

Upon hearing this, Tom took a deep breath and stroked his chin, pondering, “But…

hadn’t the office just issued that so-called ‘Anti-Hasting Regulation’ a few months ago?

If you want to be promoted to Assistant Commissioner now, you have to have at least served for eight years.

It’s written in black and white right there; how could that possibly be fudged?

Unless, the office is planning to amend the management regulations again soon?”

Jones drew on his pipe and said, “Ordinarily, it would be difficult since the new regulations had just been issued and it wouldn’t make sense to change them immediately.

But now Superintendent Hastings has been shot, you’ve read the newspapers, right?

The Home Office is currently planning to establish police organizations across the nation, and they might even carry out a comprehensive revision of the ‘Metropolitan Police Act’ of 1829.

The scope of jurisdiction and powers and duties of Scotland Yard are likely to be redefined too.

If the office decides to take this opportunity to upgrade the Criminal Investigation Department as a whole, then Superintendent Hastings’s promotion to Assistant Commissioner would also be a natural course of events.

Not to mention, he just took a bullet for the Home Office.”

At this point, Jones, with a smile, congratulated Tom and Tony, “Maybe in a few months, you’ll have three Bath stars on your shoulder, just like me.

After all, if the Criminal Investigation Department is upgraded, it has to be a collective promotion, and you’ll be carried along with the tide.”

Upon hearing this, Tom and Tony couldn’t help feeling dizzy.

“My God!”

“To get a promotion without doing anything?”

Seeing this, Jones couldn’t help but exclaim with a mix of envy and jealousy, “Life is like that, especially working in a place like Scotland Yard, where backing the right people is more important than anything.

It’s a pity I was under Superintendent Clemens; if I had discovered earlier that there was a ‘Blue Blood Noble’ from York hidden away in some corner of Greenwich station, maybe I could be a Superintendent by next year.

Ah, a Police Superintendent, with three Bath stars, their shoulder insignia are the same as an Army Lieutenant, whose official price starts from a thousand pounds.

As for a Superintendent, with an Order of Saint Edward, that’s equivalent to an Army Major, that’s over two thousand pounds.

And an Assistant Commissioner, on top of the Order of Saint Edward, he’d need to add another Bath star, that’s an Army Lieutenant Colonel, a position that can’t be secured just by money, you also need good luck to come across a vacancy…”

As Jones lamented, suddenly a chaotic sound of footsteps reached their ears.

He turned his head to see several police officers leading two well-dressed gentlemen towards the hotel’s entrance.

The middle-aged gentleman in the lead, with a pipe in his mouth, lightly tapped his hat with his cane, “Young man, do you fancy the shiny epaulettes?

I must admit, you’ve got an eye for it; I was the same when I was young.

But in my view, although everyone’s epaulettes are equally shiny, the Royal Navy officers’ uniforms are a notch handsomer than the Army’s.

Of course, if we’re only judging from the perspective of police uniforms, you Scots at Scotland Yard aren’t bad either.”

When Jones heard this, he frowned slightly and asked the junior officers, “Who is this?”

The secretary following the middle-aged gentleman pulled out a document from his breast pocket, pointed to the red seal on it, and said, “We are from the Foreign Office and have an urgent matter to discuss with Mr.

Hasting.”
