Such provocation is really low-level for an old devil.

But how can you think I’ve lost when you don’t even know what I’m about to do?”

“Being forced to leave Scotland Yard, if that’s not losing, what is?”

The Red Devil sneered, “You don’t think Rothschild gave you that low-rate housing loan because he thought you were good-looking, do you?

Without the title of Scotland Yard Commissioner, you’re worthless in their eyes.

Oh, and there are your friends Tom and Tony, who always seem clumsy.

If you leave too, just imagine the mess those fools will end up in.

It won’t be long before they are pushed out, especially Tom with his slow-witted nature, he can’t even catch up to eat something hot.”

Upon hearing this, Arthur nodded thoughtfully, “This…

seems like you’re actually right about this; they indeed fall short compared to you.”

“Hey, Arthur, you son of a…

”

But before the Red Devil could finish swearing, Arthur had already interrupted him, “However, you needn’t worry about them.

Even if I really have to leave Scotland Yard, I’ll just go and play the piano in the theater with Mr.

Mozesales, and as for Tom and Tony, they can follow behind me banging gongs.

A rendition of ‘The Bells’ should be enough to keep us going for a while, and once we’ve saved enough money, I can gather some friends and open a detective agency.

Life will still go on.

Rowan has messed with the wrong person this time; he probably never expected that staying at Scotland Yard wasn’t my goal to begin with, as Mr.

Hasting has other ways to make money.”

And indeed, repressing workers and such was truly uncomfortable.

If the Whig Party wants to ignorantly kick me out over a bit of personal vendetta from Rowan, let them deal with the headache.

Once the Whig Party completes their cabinet formation, I’ll turn around and spill the beans about the infiltrators Scotland Yard had placed in the National Political Alliance to them.

Hmm…

Even though those infiltrators were sent by me…”

After saying that, Arthur didn’t even look back, he opened the door and walked down the stairs lightly, leaving only the sound of the Red Devil’s roaring behind him.

“Arthur, you little bastard, you’ll regret this!!!”

In the dining room downstairs, Great Dumas was humming a tune, holding a knife and peeling onions in the kitchen, surrounded by various containers that clearly indicated tonight’s dinner was going to be special.

In the living room, Eld and Darwin were leaning on the sofa, each reading their favorite books.

Ever since moving here, such pre-dinner activities had almost become a habit for them.

And Darwin’s reading was particularly focused, it was a monograph by the French biologist Lamarck titled “Invertebrate Systematics.”

As for Eld, from the outside, it appeared he was holding the “Westminster Review,” a publication that represented radical liberals, but no one sitting here really thought he was reading it, although by now everyone was too lazy to flip through the paper to see what he was actually hiding behind it.

Eld turned the pages back and forth, scanning the illustrations and text in front of him, and pursed his lips dissatisfiedly, “These common stories I’ve been seeing are no longer exciting, but this one…”

His eyes shifted, and he pulled out a brand-new magazine from between the sofa cushions, his face suddenly flushed with excitement.

But before he could open the magazine, he heard Arthur coughing behind him.

Eld jerked around, facing Arthur, and then couldn’t help but whistle, “What are you doing?

Don’t you know my habits?

First time’s mine.

After I’m done, then it’s Alexander’s and your turn.”

Arthur glanced at Darwin, “What about Charles, then?”

“Charles?

Let’s forget about Charles.

He’s not even interested in monkeys lately, let alone humans.

Haven’t you noticed what he’s been into?

Recently, he’s gotten hooked on invertebrates, be it caterpillars or earthworms or something.”

While Darwin was previously immersed in his reading, he couldn’t help but frown and put down his book on hearing Eld’s comment, “Eld, why does everything sound wrong coming from your mouth?

You need to understand, I study invertebrates for research.”

“Right!” Eld nodded and patted the magazine cover in his hands, “The thing I’m reading isn’t purely for erotica either.

You want to understand the origin of species, and I want to understand the origin of life.

We both are doing research work.”

Arthur found a comfortable angle to wedge himself into the sofa, “So how’s the research going for both of you lately?”

Reacting to the question, Eld looked somber, “Just as you see, both Charles’s and my great work have reached a stalemate.”

“Really?” Arthur poured himself a cup of tea, “Eld, but I think Charles’s work might progress faster than yours.”

Upon hearing this, Darwin responded a bit sheepishly, “Arthur, you think too highly of me.”

Arthur shook his finger, “It’s not that I have faith in you, but rather in Mr.

Eld Carter.”

“Damn!” Eld cursed, “Arthur, have you been getting too cocky lately?

Just because you got a little note from Miss Byron, what’s so great about that?”
