System Anomaly: The Sin of Greed[LitRPG/Prog Fem/Anti-Hero]

The morning of the third day in the cave brought the first real improvement to Diana’s physical frame.

When she opened her eyes on the straw mat, the sharp burning in her ribs had subsided to a dull, bearable ache. The blend of bitter root broth and the dense vitality of her new Archdemon flesh was knitting the bone fractures at a pace that an ordinary human would take weeks to achieve.

Diana pressed her right hand to the ground, braced her legs, and pushed her body weight upward.

The pain in the side of her chest pulled hard, catching the breath in her throat for two seconds, but she did not fall. Her boots touched the packed earth of the cave, and she took three slow steps toward the green-ember campfire, testing the support of her knees.

Her left arm still needed to remain pinned to her side to avoid straining the shoulder tendons, but her legs were already responding firmly to commands.

Sitting on the stone stump, the gray-haired man was sharpening a skinning knife against a smooth river stone, producing a rhythmic rasp of scraping metal.

He raised his amber eyes when he saw Diana standing upright in the middle of the shelter.

“You should wait another day before putting weight on your legs,” the man said in a monotone voice, never pausing the blade’s stroke against the stone.

“I have already lost seventy-two hours lying on this straw,” Diana replied, walking slowly to a flat rock near the fire and sitting down. “Staying idle is a waste of time.”

Diana pulled the dimensional bag at her belt and began mentally reviewing her inventory: the Level 40 Dragon Glass Heart, the rare amethyst cores, the undamaged alchemy tools, and the three hundred and sixty-eight silver coins secured in the vault.

She began speaking aloud, calculating her next moves with the customary chill of her mind:

“A two-day trek through the tunnel. As soon as I cross the border of the Third Circle, I need to find Beelzebub’s first trading post, register an illicit stall to sell ninety-percent pure potions, and raise one hundred silver coins in two weeks. After that, I buy a magic courier route to send a signal to the Bastion in the Second Circle and have Rhea bring the rest of the team.”

She spoke with the certainty of someone organizing a profit ledger, planning to seize control of the Gluttony Circle’s border economy before she could even run without limping.

***

The man halted the skinning knife against the whetstone.

He wiped the blade on a grease-stained rag, set the tool on the ground, and stared at Diana for several long moments.

There was a heavy shadow in that old warrior’s tired gaze, the sort of look belonging to someone who had seen that very same ambition burn and consume entire cities centuries ago.

“You speak like someone who thinks the world is an accounting ledger where all you need is to add numbers to come out ahead,” the man said, his raspy voice cutting through the crackle of the embers.

Diana frowned, the golden rings in her pupils narrowing. “Numbers do not lie. If you possess more resources, more firepower, and a better strategy than the enemy, you win. That is how I made it this far.”

“That is how every fool carrying a Sin Fragment thinks before being buried with their own coins,” the man countered without changing his tone.

He folded his calloused arms over his chest, looking directly at the amethyst circlet on Diana’s brow:

“Being hungry is easy, girl. Every wretch in Hell wants the mountaintop. But Greed carries a silent venom you have not yet learned to see: it blinds your ability to let go of things when the ground splits open.”

***

Diana maintained an upright posture, listening with cold attention, but without agreeing.

The man continued, his voice dropping to an ancient solemnity:

“The ancient Lord of the Fourth Circle held more gold than the rivers of Hell have gravel. He possessed armies of golems, diamond palaces, and generals who trembled at the sound of his name. But when the other Thrones united and besieged the Citadel of Greed, he fell not because he lacked magical power... he fell because he refused to burn a single treasure warehouse to retreat with his life.”

The old man leaned forward, pointing a calloused index finger toward Diana’s chest:

“He thought he could hold onto every vault, every fortress, and every territory at the same time. He thought giving up a single coin to save his own rearguard was an unacceptable weakness. And in the end, the sheer weight of everything he hoarded was precisely what crushed his throne.”

The man let out a heavy sigh, looking toward the dark tunnel opening that led down to the Third Circle:

“If you cross that rift thinking you can carry the Second Circle on your back, dominate the Third Circle on your own, and never accept losing anything along the way... you won’t be a Sovereign. You will just be another corpse buried at the bottom of the abyss.”

***

Diana listened to every word in silence.

Her mind processed the story, understood the historical facts of the Fourth Circle’s fall, and grasped the old servant’s warning.

But Diana’s soul simply could not accept that retreat logic.

To the girl who had spent her entire childhood watching her parents lose what little they had because they accepted misery with bowed heads, the idea of ”letting go” or ”accepting losses” did not sound like wisdom. It sounded like cowardice disguised as prudence.

“If I begin deciding what I can or cannot afford to lose...” Diana said, her voice firm and sharp as dragon glass, “...then I have already conceded that I am weak. I did not come to Hell to be cautious and settle for crumbs. What belongs to my faction, and what I decide is mine, no one takes. If I have to break the Third Circle in two to keep what I have conquered, I will break it.”

The man stared at Diana for ten long seconds.

He saw the absolute obstinacy, the iron pride, and the ravenous hunger shining in the golden pupils of that black-horned youth.

The old man did not argue. He did not attempt to convince her with further points.

He merely released a long, weary, resigned sigh, picking up the hunting knife from the ground and returning to cleaning the blade with the rag.

He had seen that same flame burn before. He knew that words could not bend a mind forged in Greed. Only the clash of steel and the burden of her own choices would teach the lesson she refused to hear.

“You will learn,” the man murmured softly without looking at her. “For better or worse, the abyss always collects its due.”

The man rose from the stone stump, walked to the back of the cave, and retrieved a rustic leather satchel with reinforced straps.

He placed two pieces of dried cave-fish meat and three boiled roots inside the satchel, handing the parcel to Diana.

“The path down the tunnel is steep,” the man said in a neutral tone. “Drink water from the blue crystal veins and do not light open flame in the narrow galleries because of sulfur gas.”

Diana took the leather satchel and fastened it to her belt with her right hand, beside her black steel dagger.

She rose from the rock, took five more paces through the cave, and adjusted the leather coat over her shoulders. Her body still ached, but her legs were ready for the march.

The balance of 368 Silver Coins (36.8 Gold Coins) rested safe in her dimensional pouch.

Diana paused at the entrance of the dark tunnel sloping down into the bowels of the earth.

She looked at the gray-haired man one last time, nodding her head in an austere gesture of respect for the rescue.

The old man offered no farewell. He simply remained seated near the green embers, watching the Commander of Greed take her first step into the dark.

The clandestine crossing into the Third Circle of Hell had begun.
