When a Blade of Grass Wants to Become Immortal

Chapter 48: Chapter 48: She Doesn’t Want the Scum Ex-husband 8

”Then you needn’t worry about me, cousin. Our due dates are practically the same; we might even give birth one right after the other. When the time comes, everyone will see for themselves what kind of talent our children possess.”

Ji Xiaosong’s expression was serene. The corner of her mouth quirked into a faint, cold smile, her eyes filled with disdain and contempt.

She possessed the original owner’s memories and knew that in her past life, Xu Yang was the only man she had ever been with.

As for why she had given birth to a Yellow Phoenix, if no one had switched the baby, then the problem must have been with Xu Yang.

Recalling the various strange signs Xu Yang exhibited every year during his birth month, a few suspicions began to form in Ji Xiaosong’s mind.

’But I have no proof yet. Perhaps when Ji Huadan gives birth, everything will become clear.’

Ji Huadan, rebuffed by Ji Xiaosong yet again, was left speechless. She still wanted to argue, but Xu Yang, at her side, gently tugged her sleeve in warning.

”Eldest Princess, Huadan has been pregnant lately, and her emotions have been a bit volatile. I hope you won’t take offense. You are both sisters. Let us consider today’s family banquet a celebration for both princesses.”

Before Xu Yang could say a word, Mother Xu finally stepped forward.

’She didn’t intervene earlier, didn’t intervene later, only stepping in to smooth things over now that her own daughter-in-law is losing the argument.’

’What if Ji Huadan had won today’s war of words?’

’Heh, Xu Yang’s mother is no pushover. Given Ji Huadan’s temperament, the two of them must have had plenty of disagreements over the past month.’

”I don’t need your phony sentiment! Who do you think you are? With your status, are you even qualified to host a family banquet for a princess?”

Ji Huadan was already fuming from her encounter with Ji Xiaosong and was looking for an outlet for her anger. Mother Xu had just walked right into the line of fire.

Xu Yang’s expression instantly darkened. Frowning, he glared at Ji Huadan and snapped, ”Huadan, that’s enough! Mother meant well.”

Mother Xu trembled with rage at Ji Huadan’s words, her face flushed crimson. She glanced at the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix, but since they said nothing, she also kept her mouth shut.

”Like I need her ’good intentions’?”

Ji Huadan was now even more furious. Today’s family banquet was supposed to be for her and the child in her womb. And now, thanks to what Mother Xu just said, their friends and family were supposed to give half their congratulations to Ji Xiaosong?

’It’s like she’s twisting a knife in my heart!’

The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. Ji Huadan flung her sleeve and stormed off.

Xu Yang was utterly humiliated. But, considering Ji Huadan was pregnant, he managed to calm himself and returned to entertaining the guests.

He even sent people to check on Ji Huadan, but those he sent never came back.

The family banquet ended up being a dull affair. By the time it was nearly over, Ji Huadan still hadn’t reappeared.

Ji Xiaosong didn’t normally associate with Ji Huadan. For the past few months of her pregnancy, she had rarely left Songyu Palace unless absolutely necessary.

The Phoenix Clan’s gestation period is short. Six months passed, and Ji Huadan went into labor.

The Xu Family waited outside the delivery room, and the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix had also sent people to stand by.

She was a princess of the Royal Family, after all. Someone had to be there to watch over things.

After an entire day and night, Ji Huadan finally laid an egg.

Xu Yang waited anxiously, craning his neck in anticipation of the celestial phenomena, since the birth of a high-ranking bloodline was usually accompanied by auspicious signs.

However, by the time a palace servant carried out the yellow egg laid by Ji Huadan, not a single auspicious sign had appeared over the Phoenix Clan’s domain.

”Why... why is it like this again?”

Xu Yang stared at the egg in the palace servant’s hands and collapsed to the floor.

Though Mother Xu’s face was etched with disappointment, she didn’t seem surprised at all. She was quite calm.

She calmly instructed the palace servant to perform a paternity test between Xu Yang and the newly laid egg. Once the results confirmed he was the father, she said nothing more.

”Elder Xu, since the Second Princess has delivered safely, I will return to report to the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix. I imagine they are getting anxious.”

After confirming that the egg before them was indeed laid by Ji Huadan, the palace servant sent by the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix went into the delivery room to check on the unconscious princess, then departed.

But Xu Yang, lost in his memories, didn’t notice a thing.

Just as the palace servant reached the main gate of the Xu Family estate, the sky suddenly blazed with golden light. Auspicious, five-colored clouds gathered, and a thousand streams of blessed energy surged toward the heavens.

Ranks of phoenixes, cloaked in radiant light, cried out in unison as they circled and danced around Songyu Palace, as if lining up to welcome the arrival of a supremely noble being.

In an instant, the entire Phoenix Clan was enveloped by this strange and sacred spectacle.

Everyone knew this was the blessed omen that only appeared upon the birth of a Golden Phoenix, the highest rank of all.

And this newly born, noble Golden Phoenix was none other than the child of Ji Xiaosong.

「In Songyu Palace」

The smiles on the faces of the Phoenix King and Queen Phoenix were unstoppable.

Their daughter had really given birth to a Golden Phoenix!

A real Golden Phoenix!

A Golden Phoenix, not seen in ten thousand years!

”Your Majesty, Queen, the Second Princess has delivered safely. She gave birth to a Yellow Phoenix.”

The family’s joy was suddenly interrupted by the report. When the Phoenix King heard that Ji Huadan had given birth to a Yellow Phoenix, he frowned.

”Are you sure you saw correctly? A Yellow Phoenix?”

”Reporting to Your Majesty, it is indeed a Yellow Phoenix. I watched the Second Princess lay the egg with my own eyes.”

Fearing any mishap, the palace servant had watched Ji Huadan for the entire duration of the delivery.

She couldn’t believe her own eyes when she saw it was a yellow egg.

Elder Xu is a Red Phoenix and the Second Princess is an Orange Phoenix. Even if their child inherited the lesser of the two bloodlines, it should have been an Orange Phoenix at the very least.

But there was no denying it—she had given birth to a Yellow Phoenix.

”This... Why would this happen?”

The Queen Phoenix didn’t particularly care what kind of child Ji Huadan had, but she worried about the implications.

’I’ve had to clean up after Ji Huadan’s malicious acts for years, and I’m sick of it.’

’Giving birth to a Yellow Phoenix now might just be divine retribution.’

’But what if she was with another phoenix? What if she cuckolded Xu Yang?’

’Why else would she give birth to a Yellow Phoenix?’

’Now I’ll have to clean up this mess for her again. It’s my lot for being her aunt.’

’Annoying!’

’So incredibly annoying!’

’My own daughter gave birth to a Golden Phoenix. This should be a time of immense joy.’

’And now that ungrateful girl, Ji Huadan... what on earth did she do to end up with a Yellow Phoenix?’

”In response to the Queen, I do not know why the Second Princess gave birth to a Yellow Phoenix. However, Elder Xu’s mother performed a paternity test on the spot between the Elder and the new egg. It is indeed Elder Xu’s child.”

The palace servant did her best to suppress her urge to gossip. She stood with her gaze lowered, awaiting the Queen Phoenix’s next command.

”If it’s his biological child, then leave it be. Go and send the Second Princess some Spirit Plants and Spiritual Medicine. Her pregnancy was already a great drain on her, so she’ll need them now more than ever.”

The Queen Phoenix waved her hand, dismissing the palace servant.

Seeing that the Queen Phoenix had already handled it, the Phoenix King said nothing more.

’I don’t know what the deal is with the Xu Family. They have the youngest elder, yet they’re so poor that Ji Huadan constantly has to come back to the Royal Family for handouts.’

’It would be more accurate to say the Royal Family raised that egg than the Xu Family.’

’We fed them so much Spirit Grass and Spiritual Medicine, and sent so many Spiritual Objects, only for them to produce a child with a mismatched bloodline.’

’Whatever.’ The Phoenix King sighed.

’It’s still my brother’s bloodline. Even if its talent is lacking, at least the lineage continues. In that sense, I haven’t entirely broken the promise I made to my brother.’

”Alright, let’s not dwell on others’ affairs,” the Phoenix King said. ”We’ve done more than enough for her over the years. Now that she has her own family, we shouldn’t interfere so much.”

The Phoenix King had come to a decision, his attitude different from before.

”I’m glad you’ve come to your senses,” the Queen Phoenix replied, relieved. ”I’ve grown weary of dealing with your brother’s daughter over the years.”

The Queen Phoenix breathed a sigh of relief at the change in the Phoenix King’s attitude.

’I was afraid he would feel sorry for his niece again and shower her with all sorts of treasures.’

Since the Phoenix King’s attitude had shifted, the Queen Phoenix decided to bring up another matter.

”Her palace servants used to suddenly disappear for no reason. I asked her about it, but each time she would just cry and say she was a poor manager, that they had fallen in love and eloped.”

”Your Majesty, she’s used that excuse for years. I always felt something was off, but you never let me pry into her affairs. Now, I see it as a potential hidden danger. Since she has a child and has put down roots in the Xu Family, let’s just send the rest of her former palace servants to the Xu Family estate.”
