She Used Me for a Dare… Now I Own Her Mother

Chapter 566: Game Recognizes Game(2)

”When did you come up here?” Cole asked quietly. The tone was casual, but his eyes carried a sharp, measuring edge, fishing to see just how much of the indignity Alex had witnessed.

A faint, unhurried smile touched Alex’s lips as he answered honestly.

”Right before those men slipped through the door.”

Cole’s brow arched upward, the lines around his cut lip tightening in dry disbelief.

”You mean...” Cole clicked his tongue, a scoff rumbling in his chest. ”You were standing back there in the shadows from the very beginning, watching an old man get beaten into the dirt, and you didn’t even think to step out and lend a hand?”

Alex took another smooth pull from his cigarette, savoring the rich cedar warmth in his throat, before turning to meet the old man’s gaze directly.

”I never thought you were the type of person who needed saving, Raymond.”

The words hung in the cold night air between them. For a second, the terrace went completely still, save for the dry rustle of wind through the garden ferns.

Cole didn’t laugh. The cigarette stilled between his fingers as his weathered eyes locked onto Alex’s face. The playful, battered mask vanished, replaced by a sharp, calculating stillness as he stared deeply into the young man’s eyes, dissecting every micro-expression.

In that quiet, heavy look, he was measuring the threat... wondering just how much this kid had actually seen, how much he knew, and whether his secrets were still safe.

Alex didn’t flinch. He simply held the stare with the same untroubled smile, pale smoke drifting between them.

Seeing that unshakable calm, the tension in Cole’s shoulders subtly gave way. The corner of his cut lip twitched, breaking into a slow, crooked smile.

Truth be told, from the second this young man had stepped into the hotel, he had done nothing but impress him. At every turn, across every test, Alex had quietly dismantled every assumption Cole had made.

A low, raspy chuckle rumbled from his chest, shaking his bruised ribs.

”Smart mouth,” Cole muttered, shaking his head as he finally tapped his ash away. ”Very sharp eyes, too.”

He turned back toward the balustrade, leaning both forearms against the stone. The playful grandpa routine was beginning to thin, replaced by a quiet, calculating stillness that settled over him like heavy armor.

”You know, Alexander...” Cole began, his voice gravel-rough and unhurried. ”In recent weeks, I haven’t had many visitors. Ever since those three packs of hyenas locked onto my building, people cross the street just to avoid my shadow. Nobody wants to be seen shaking hands with a poisoned old man.”

He paused, letting the drift of cedar smoke thin between them.

”Only a handful have dared to seek me out like this,” Cole continued, a dry, cynical edge hardening his tone. ”And almost every one of them falls into the same two lots. Either arrogant highborn scions who think a family crest makes them invincible, completely blind to how this world actually works... or cheap rats sent by those bastards in disguise, trying to find a crack in my armor and pry my land away.”

Cole turned his body fully away from the balustrade.

He stood squarely in front of Alex, his battered, ragged frame settling into an easy, dangerous stillness. His weathered eyes locked onto the young man, measuring the quiet confidence and the lack of hesitation behind that untroubled smile.

”And to me...” Cole murmured, exhaling a thin stream of gray smoke into the night wind, ”...you don’t look like either of those.”

”So tell me, Alexander...” Cole’s voice dropped, the gravelly tone giving way to quiet, deliberate weight. ”...what exactly are you?”

It wasn’t an idle question. Throughout his life, Cole had prided himself on his instincts.

Between building an empire from the ground up and quietly carving his own path through cultivation, he had learned how to dismantle people with a single glance. A few seconds was usually all he needed to measure a man’s greed, his fear, or the exact point where his spine would snap under pressure.

Yet tonight, those instincts had failed him at every turn.

Every box Cole tried to put Alex into had fallen apart. But what truly grated on the old man’s nerves was that he couldn’t even measure the young man’s depth.

Logically, someone of Alex’s age should barely have scratched the surface of cultivation... an Early Enhanced novice at best, relying on borrowed family backing. Yet every time Cole subtly cast his senses across the gap, probing for vital essence or the telltale hum of an internal realm, his perception hit an impenetrable void.

There was no nervous pulse, no leak of aura, no arrogance. Just a calm, bottomless stillness.

To a man who had survived by knowing where every dagger in the city was aimed, Alexander Hale was a complete blind spot... and that made him far more dangerous than eight men with loaded guns.

Alex didn’t blink. He simply drew in another slow drag of the cedar tobacco, feeling the smooth heat roll through his chest before releasing a pale, lazy ribbon of smoke into the cold night wind. The ember glowed against the dark, illuminating the calm, unhurried curve of his mouth.

There was no defensive edge in his posture, no desperate urge to prove his pedigree or rattle off achievements.

”I’m none of them, old man,” Alex replied, his smile easy and untroubled. ”I’m simply a man who doesn’t fear anyone. Be it a prominent clan, a Great Family... or even a Sacred Family.”

The words slipped out into the midnight draft with the quiet nonchalance of someone commenting on the weather. Yet the moment they landed, the air on the terrace turned suffocatingly heavy.

Cole froze. The cigarette ember stilled just inches from his mouth, gray ash clinging to the tip as his weathered eyes went wide.

For all his decades navigating boardrooms, alleyways, and the ruthless hierarchy of this city, Cole had heard men posture in a thousand different ways. He had heard brutes threaten murder, seen billionaires boast of their vaults, and watched arrogant scions swear they owned the streets.

But he had never heard someone dismiss a Sacred Family with such careless irreverence.

A Sacred Family.

In this world, those two words were not a title or a political faction... they were an absolute law of nature. They were ancient behemoths ruling from the shadows of civilization, holding monopolies on life, death, and higher cultivation. Their leaders were monsters capable of erasing entire lineages with a single decree, entities before whom even high-ranking officials and corporate magnates knelt like dogs.

Even an independent Ascended cultivator like Cole, for all the blood he had swallowed to reach his realm, knew he was merely an insect that had grown a slightly harder shell in their eyes.

To say you were not afraid of them wasn’t just arrogance. It was suicidal lunacy.

Cole stared at the young man, his bruised jaw tightening as he searched Alex’s face with ruthless intensity. He looked for the manic spark of delusion, the cheap, hollow bravado of a boy who had lived in a gilded cage and never tasted real blood.

Yet beneath the battered skin and the years of hardened instinct, a strange sensation prickled at the back of Cole’s neck.

There was no crack in the boy’s composure. No nervous swallow, no sudden spike in heart rate, no fleeting shift in his eyes. Just that same bottomless, untroubled calm staring back at him through the drifting smoke. It defied every rule of survival in this city, yet Cole’s gut... honed by decades of bloodshed and narrow escapes... whispered something impossible:

The young man wasn’t bluffing.

A long, quiet beat hung between them, carried by the cold updraft of the cliff.

Then, the tight grimace on Cole’s blood-crusted jaw softened. A low, raspy chuckle rumbled from deep within his chest, shaking his bruised ribs until he had to shake his head in disbelief.

”I like that attitude, kid,” Cole murmured, the gravel in his voice tinged with genuine warmth. ”I really do.”

He took one final drag of his cigarette, watching the glowing ember burn down to the filter before flicking the stub out into the abyss. He leaned back against the balustrade, folding his arms across his dusty chest as his weathered gaze traced the sharp, unbroken lines of Alex’s face.

”How old are you? Twenty-three? Twenty-four?” Cole sighed, a faint, nostalgic smile carving into the corners of his mouth. ”Standing there with that cold look in your eyes, ready to swallow the world whole. You’ve got that fire in your gut, Alexander. That raw, relentless hunger to build an empire and tear down anyone standing in your way.”

Cole’s eyes turned momentarily distant, reflecting the glittering sea of neon lights sprawled beneath them.

”I remember that feeling,” the old man said softly. ”Forty years ago, when I was just a penniless bastard with nothing to my name but a pair of bloody fists and a stubborn skull. I had that exact same hunger. I thought I could outwork every merchant, outfight every cultivator, and conquer this entire damn city by sheer force of will.”

He paused, a quiet self-deprecation touching his voice before he brought his gaze back to Alex.

”Looking at you tonight... damn if I don’t see a ghost of myself.”

Without another word, Cole reached deep into the inner breast pocket of his ruined suit jacket.

Alex watched him with a cool, measuring eye, expecting perhaps a token, an emblem, or a set of conditions. Instead, Cole’s calloused fingers withdrew a thick, stiff document bound in dark leather and secured with a crimson legal seal.

He didn’t hesitate. With a casual flick of his wrist, Cole tossed the heavy folder forward.

It slid smoothly across the flat granite balustrade, coming to a rest right beneath Alex’s resting hand. Across the front, stamped in pristine, official gold leaf, were the municipal land deeds and title transfers for the prime district property.

”Take it,” Cole said, his voice completely level. ”I’m selling it to you.”
