The Archmetamagician: The Weave Collapses Again

The ranger was filled with regret and decisively grabbed the last two antimagic arrows in his hands.

But just as he drew the bowstring, several sharp whistles sounded beside his ears. He knew that sound too well. He immediately stopped his motion, crouching down to dodge.

With a whoosh, a sharp arrow brushed past his body, leaving a streak of blood.

He looked up and saw a wood elf standing on a tree trunk not far away, bow drawn and arrow nocked, aiming directly at him.

Whoosh—

He dodged in embarrassment, but the opponent’s archery was cunning, predicting his prediction, and once again carved a bloody groove into his shoulder.

Seeing this, Anser chuckled.

Salian had arrived!

And not only him—Finn and Colin had arrived at the same time. The three of them, with three bows, roamed along the edge of the battlefield and temporarily suppressed the opposing group of archers.

But the enemy rangers had the advantage in both range and numbers. This situation would not last long.

Anser did not bother entangling himself with those two fighters. Silver mist flashed, and he vanished from where he stood, closing the distance with the ranger. After landing, he leaped upward and jumped onto a tree stump several meters high.

Then he focused his mind and cast a spell, locking onto the ranger who carried the antimagic equipment.

”ફાયરબોલકલા”

Metamagic: Quickened Spell, Distant Spell, Seeking Spell + Fireball!

A bright flash shot from his fingertips, crossing more than a hundred meters in an instant and appearing before that ranger.

That ranger was still exchanging shots with Salian and had no guard up at all. He dodged in panic, but the flash changed direction at the same time and pursued him.

With a boom, the fireball exploded, engulfing the ranger.

Whoosh, whoosh—

Two miniature meteors fell from the sky, smashing one after the other into the sea of flames.

Anser had no time to regret the stolen kill. His temples throbbed; his sorcery points were completely depleted, and he had only a dozen or so points of Magic Power left.

Throwing Fireballs like that felt great, but after the excitement passed, fatigue always followed.

However, he still had fighting strength left.

He leaped down, picked up a shield, and faced the two fighters head-on.

Those two fighters turned and ran immediately, not even having the courage to fight him in melee.

”Cowards.” Commander Moore was filled with hatred, his face full of anger. ”All of you, attack! He’s only one person.”

Whoosh, whoosh—two miniature meteors smashed toward him one after the other, as if refuting his words.

With the antimagic arrows gone, Iris had no more scruples. A meteor shower fell from the sky, one after another crashing into the crowd. The thunderous explosions rang out continuously.

The soldiers did not dare gather together and scattered in all directions.

How many fourth-circle spells could a 16th-level Sorcerer cast? At least twenty or thirty. That meant two or three hundred miniature meteors. Without any countermeasures, she alone could break an entire army.

While chasing down Amnian soldiers, Anser kept an eye on her, afraid that she might trigger a Wild Magic surge and cause an accident.

As for those soldiers, they could not threaten him at all. Bullets, blades, and swords could not even break his defense; it was not even their turn to make the protective barrier come into play.

It was like going into musou mode—one man chasing down a whole crowd and cutting them apart, with the occasional breath attack or Ray of Frost. How many he could kill depended entirely on his speed and stamina.

”Ha—”

Giant Tail came charging over like a wild bull, a round shield braced in front of him. Wherever he passed, all the soldiers were sent flying.

Kaleno hid behind him, dual swords in hand, his posture graceful, his fighting style more like that of a bard.

The sound of hoofbeats rang out. Nornoth cocked its rear and ”gently” tossed Bratt off, then sprinted toward Anser.

Bratt gave a bitter smile and followed behind Giant Tail and Kaleno as he ran toward Anser.

Anser laughed loudly, swung himself onto the horse, and pointed his longsword at Moore. ”Kill him!”

The few of them formed a small squad and deliberately charged into the most crowded places. Anser supported them with Ray of Frost, picking off every soldier who dared resist.

On the other side of the forest, the army led by Quentin finally arrived. By then the battlefield had already descended into complete chaos, and the Amnian army’s formation was utterly gone.

No one had expected a scene like this. The soldiers froze for a moment, then their morale surged, and they charged at the enemy like tigers and wolves.

Too cautious. We should have gotten closer. Quentin sighed inwardly.

Moore noticed that fewer and fewer soldiers remained around him. He swept his gaze across the battlefield, but did not see Derrick anywhere. Two Awakened Trees were hunting down his soldiers, while that treant stood guard before the black dragon.

”You—Derrick, you coward…” He was furious beyond measure, and a string of slang that was hard to understand burst from his mouth.

Facing the knight galloping toward him, he decisively threw down his weapon, dropped to his knees, raised both hands, and shouted, ”We surrender—”

The trusted soldiers around him were stunned. They had heard their officer cursing and had already prepared themselves to die heroically. They had not expected their officer… to kneel.

How was that any different from Derrick’s behavior?

Grumble as they might, the soldiers did not hesitate. They threw down their weapons and knelt to surrender. Hesitating for even a second would have been a blasphemy against life.

Anser felt a little regretful, but he also knew that today’s target was not them, but that black dragon.

”That barbarian and a few other professionals got away.” Salian walked over, his expression not looking too good. He had lost them.

”It’s fine.” Anser glanced at Old Moss and did not dwell on the matter.

When a high-level barbarian was bent on escaping, it was hard to stop him.

He and Iris had poured a huge amount of Magic Power into the other enemies. They had no strength left to pursue, nor could they pursue. The black dragon was the priority. If this dragged on any longer, things could easily go wrong; a dragon’s recovery ability was far from ordinary.

Quentin directed the troops to collect weapons, clean up the battlefield, and secure the surrendered soldiers.

Anser and Iris led the group of professionals over to the black dragon, but they did not get too close.

Everyone was breathing rapidly, their expressions tense yet excited.

The black dragon was covered in wounds. Both of its hind legs were locked by blue-purple chains. It lay on the ground without moving, only letting out heavy, rough breaths.

Its eyes were open, and the pair of pupils continuously followed Anser as he moved.

”We are of the same kind.” It spoke in Draconic, its voice deep.

”So what?” Anser raised the Dragon Gold Slashing Swords. The blade flashed with a cold gleam, without a single nick. ”We are also… mortal enemies.”

”As long as you let me go, I will give you all the treasures I have accumulated over the years.” The black dragon panted. ”It is a fortune that no one can resist, far more valuable than my flesh and blood.”

”Where?” Anser smiled faintly. Your treasure seems to be flowing into my pocket every day.

”It is very well hidden, and very far away. Only I can find it.” The black dragon narrowed its eyes, then added, ”We can sign a magical contract.”

”Oh~” A trace of coldness appeared in Anser’s eyes. The black dragon was lying.

That batch of cursed treasure had only appeared recently. For the black dragon to arrive so quickly, it must not be far away.

No matter how hard it racked its brain, it would never guess that the one responsible was standing right in front of it.

”You didn’t bring anything with you?”

Anser stepped closer to the black dragon, walking all the way to the side of its head. Old Moss followed behind him like a bodyguard.

The black dragon’s eyes moved. ”No…”

”Lies!” Anser shouted angrily, swinging his longsword. ”A despicable dragon does not deserve my respect. Kill!”

Before he finished speaking, Iris pointed her wand. An invisible lash struck the dragon’s head. The black dragon let out a wail and suddenly stood up.

Old Moss seemed to have been preparing for this long ago. He slammed a fist onto the black dragon’s head. A loud bang sounded as the black dragon’s eyes widened in fury, blood spraying from its mouth and nose.

Seizing the opportunity, Old Moss rushed forward and wrapped both arms tightly around the black dragon’s neck, not giving it any chance to breathe out its breath attack.

The two Awakened Trees had somehow already run behind it. One grabbed the iron chain, the other hugged the dragon’s tail and pulled with all its strength. The pain made the black dragon struggle violently, yet it could not break free.

The others reacted quickly as well and launched attacks almost at the same time, though most achieved only limited results.

Anser’s head suddenly transformed into a dragon’s head. He stepped forward and clamped onto the black dragon’s lower jaw. Opening his mouth, he breathed out. A freezing breath poured directly into the black dragon’s mouth and nose. White frost spread rapidly, covering most of its head and neck.

[…Visagazur was hit, took 19 cold damage. Current Hit Points: 13/175]

It’s still not dead? Anser was secretly shocked.

The treant’s Strength was as high as 23. A punch to the head like that was not something just anyone could withstand.

Ignoring the swelling pain in his throat, he braced the Dragon Gold Slashing Swords against the black dragon’s mouth and once again unleashed a freezing breath.
