The Archmetamagician: The Weave Collapses Again

Anser was completely unflustered. Even he himself did not know how hard he was to kill.

Without spells, he still had extremely high armor and various life-saving equipment, such as the carved dragon-scale amulet. It functioned passively and was not afraid of an Antimagic Field.

After he fell several dozen meters, the arrows immediately grew dense.

Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh—

His body shrank slightly as he raised his shield to block. Astonishingly, he stopped most of the arrows, and the shield turned into a porcupine.

Occasionally one or two arrows struck the parts his protection did not cover—his legs—but the dragon scales attached with Genie’s Splendor easily blocked them. They could not penetrate his defense at all.

He was a Paladin proficient in Protection fighting. For the enemy to try to shoot him down in midair was simply a fool’s dream.

In the distance, Iris’s expression was cold and stern. Ignoring the danger, she descended in altitude. Ten miniature meteors revolved around her body. With a point of her wand, two meteors shrieked as they flew out, rapidly smashing toward those Rangers.

After throwing them, she had no time to look at the results. She immediately pulled up in altitude, barely avoiding the arrows that were shot toward her.

Boom, boom—

The miniature meteors crashed down and exploded one after another. Several Rangers dodged in embarrassment.

The antimagic arrows stopped.

At this moment, Anser was only sixty or seventy meters above the ground.

Below him, more than a hundred muskets and several bows were aiming at him. The barbarian Derrick also raised a javelin high, his body bent like a bow, a ferocious grin on his face.

Although an accident had occurred and the antimagic effect had not continued, it did not affect the overall situation.

For them, this altitude was a death zone. Even if Anser immediately cast Fly, he would not be able to escape quickly. He could only be drowned by countless attacks.

’Come on then—let’s trade fire!’

Anser sneered, magic power surging around him as he went full firepower.

”ફાયરબોલકલા”

Metamagic: Quickened Spell + Fireball!

The Draconic words seemed to burn his mouth, so fast they were impossible to hear clearly. The air froze instantly, and three flashes dropped from his fingertips in succession.

At the same time, gunshots and bowstrings blended into one continuous sound. Countless arrows and bullets covered him, leaving no blind spots.

A burst of silver light mist flashed past. Anser’s figure disappeared from where he was and appeared in the air more than ten meters away.

’I can teleport.’

Just as he reappeared, a shrill howl came to his ear—so fast there was no time to react. Instinctively he raised his shield and activated Shield.

A cold gleam struck. The shield and Shield shattered one after another. The spearhead struck his shoulder, and even the dragon scales attached with elemental radiance revealed a faint crack.

A transparent magical barrier popped out, blocking the javelin that had reached the end of its force. The spear tip flashed with a trace of golden light, completely undamaged.

Anser casually caught hold of the javelin, which was obviously no ordinary weapon. He looked calm on the surface, but in reality he had broken out in a cold sweat.

He hated thrown weapons. Ever since transmigrating, almost every attack that might have endangered his life had come from thrown weapons.

But he was no longer what he once was. If his shield, spells, and armor could not withstand it, he still had the magical barrier of the Protector’s Bracer. After that, there was the injury-triggered Royal Butterfly Cloak, and finally Death Ward as the last safeguard.

His margin for error was extraordinarily high.

Below, Fireball exploded one after another. Derrick, the musket squad, and the archers each got one. The enormous red-and-yellow fireballs linked into a single mass, flames soaring into the sky and turning into a surging sea of fire.

Everyone scattered and fled. A large number of experience notifications flashed by in succession, mostly from ordinary people, though there were also a few professionals.

[…Derrick succeeded on his Dexterity saving throw, took 27 fire damage, current Hit Points 101/136]

Using elemental resonance, Anser floated in midair, while mentally locking onto the man named Derrick.

The dice spun for a moment, and the target information popped up:

[Derek, human, Level 13 Barbarian (Berserker)]

’That health pool… his Constitution is very strong. Still, the battle has only just begun.’

He activated the Rod of Security and pointed with one hand. A tall treant appeared out of thin air on the open ground ahead.

”Old Moss, get him!”

Old Moss raised its eyes and saw a sea of fire. Startled, it took a step back, then turned its head to look at Anser. ”Don’t go setting fires all over the place.”

”Yeah, yeah, I know. Get moving—”

Old Moss swept its gaze around and quickly distinguished who was an enemy and who was an ally.

It pointed both hands at two large trees not far away. Magical radiance descended, and the two trees came to life. Swinging their trunks and pulling up their roots, they raised their hands and smashed a stunned Amn soldier nearby into pulp, then charged straight at Derrick.

The combat power of animated trees was not much weaker than that of a treant. They were likewise unafraid of bludgeoning and piercing damage. Although their speed was average, their strength was tremendous.

One treant and two animated trees charged at Derrick at the same time. Their thudding footsteps were deafening, as if the earth itself were trembling. Their momentum was terrifying.

There was not the slightest trace of a smile left on Derrick’s face. His eyes were filled with shock. The killing move originally reserved for the black dragon had been used on a little Sorcerer, yet it had not even drawn blood, and the weapon had even been caught.

But he had no time to think further. As the treant closed in, he immediately swung his greatsword to meet the enemy. Several times he tried to pursue and kill Anser, but each attempt was interrupted by the treant’s attacks.

The treant’s strength was comparable to that of an adult dragon. He could only dodge and did not dare take it head-on.

But Anser knew the treant would have a hard time defeating Derrick. A high-level Barbarian’s athletic ability and reaction speed were too strong, and his combat skills were superb. Brute force alone would not be enough.

He leapt forward and slowly descended, putting away the javelin and taking out the Dragon Gold Slashing Swords, his eyes rapidly sweeping across the battlefield.

The Amn army had been scattered, but they still had several hundred combat-capable soldiers. Derrick’s squad had abandoned the black dragon and, together with those archers, rushed straight toward him.

Meanwhile, Durlag’s forces had not yet arrived at the battlefield. The battle just now had seemed long, but in reality only a few minutes had passed.

Whoosh—

With a bang, the Antimagic Field descended once again.

The Rangers, who had recovered their footing, suppressed him immediately. Their range was close to two hundred meters. This was the first time Anser had ever been suppressed by someone else’s range.

But he did not dare to frequently rely on Misty Step to evade. His Magic Power had already been consumed by nearly half and could not afford waste.

In the sky, Iris, who had been bombarding the ground below, also received special attention from two Rangers. Her spell range was insufficient, and she was repeatedly forced back.

The class composition of Derrick’s squad was extremely targeted.

’Damn, they’re rich!’

Anser followed the momentum and landed on the ground. Facing the professional squad closing in around him, he charged forward. After the distance shortened, his head shook and transformed into a ferocious dragon head.

”Roar—”

A cone of flames more than ten meters long surged out, engulfing two fighters and burning them until they rolled on the ground in embarrassment.

With this distance and area, ordinary professionals would find it hard to imagine.

Two sharp arrows shot toward him. Anser rolled to dodge. The arrows struck his legs, but with two clangs they were deflected by the dragon scales, failing to break his defense.

Taking advantage of the movement, he slipped out of the Antimagic Field. The elemental orb hovering beside him began to whirl again, buzzing.

Then layers of spell light burst out across his body: Jump, Longstrider, Divine Favor, Shield of Faith. His entire body was surrounded by overlapping radiance.

The fighter who lunged from the side froze for an instant, his descending longsword pausing for a brief moment.

Anser neither dodged nor avoided. His longsword slashed diagonally, a streak of platinum light flashing across it.

How could the fighter dare to stake his life against a monster? His longsword changed direction and parried the attack.

But at the very moment the weapons clashed, earthen-brown elemental power suddenly erupted.

The fighter felt his body sink, as though he were carrying a small mountain, unable to move.

Anser grinned savagely. The platinum sword light swept past, a head flying into the air as blood sprayed several meters.

This was a third-circle Divine Smite empowered by Divine Favor. Combined with the Dragon Gold Slashing Swords, it was enough to make up for his weakness in Strength.

[Target dead. Gained 450 experience points]

Elemental Smite was truly useful. Unfortunately, each use required Channel Divinity. Twice per day was simply not enough.

The others saw this and their expressions changed drastically.

This was a powerful fighter who had just stepped into the elite tier, yet he had been cut down by two strikes.

”Don’t hold back—don’t let him cast!” the fighter who had been scorched by the dragon breath roared angrily toward the distant Rangers.
