The Hidden Monster of House Vale

Chapter 69: Chapter - 69 - The Crimson Trial

The crimson sky bled above them, a wound that would not close. From its depths poured a ceaseless tide of winged horrors—small as sparrows, each one, but so numerous they blotted out the sun’s dying light, turning the world into a realm of perpetual twilight. When they touched the ground, these creatures underwent a grotesque metamorphosis, their forms swelling and twisting into giant monstrosities with claws like scythes and eyes burning with ancient malice.

Zarek swung his blade in a wide arc, cleaving through three of the creatures before they could complete their transformation. Black blood sprayed across the desolate red earth, which drank it hungrily. The ground beneath him was already saturated with the blood of countless fallen—both theirs and the enemy’s—and it squelched beneath his boots with every desperate step.

”Yelena, help me here! Cast some shield!” Zarek shouted, his voice ragged with exertion. His arms burned from hours of combat, but he could not stop. Could not afford even a moment’s hesitation.

Yelena’s lips curled into a sneer, her dark lipstick like a stain of poison against her porcelain skin. ”Don’t order me around,” she said, her voice cold as winter steel. Despite her words, she raised her hand, and a translucent barrier shimmered into existence around them—a dome of astral energy that would buy them precious seconds.

Her short pink hair was plastered to her temples with sweat now, and she despised it. She wore a dress of pitch black that hugged her curves and fell to mid-thigh, the fabric so fine it shimmered even in this hellish light. The garment had cost more than most villages earned in a year, and now it was stained with monster ichor and her own perspiration. A truly unacceptable state of affairs.

This is intolerable, she thought, her emerald eyes tracking the endless swarm descending from above. Why was I assigned such a pathetic partner? And where are the others? There should be four of us—the academy’s protocols demand it. This is absolute bullshit.

She loathed weakness with every fiber of her being, and in her estimation, Zarek embodied it perfectly. A mortal man, however skilled with that rusted sword of his, was still just a mortal. He couldn’t touch the creatures until they descended into his reach, which meant she was doing all the heavy lifting. She was the reason either of them still drew breath.

Let’s hope the others find us soon. And let’s hope they’re at least marginally more competent than this pathetic wretch.

Zarek, oblivious to her disdain, fought on. He was handsome enough, she supposed—strong jaw, honest eyes, the kind of face that made common girls swoon. But Yelena came from a lineage of realm masters stretching back seven generations. She had tasted true power. Men like Zarek were beneath her notice, useful only as cannon fodder when the situation demanded it.

As if to prove her point, a cluster of the creatures broke through her barrier’s weakest point, their tiny forms screeching as they plummeted toward the ground. They hit the earth and began their transformation, bones cracking and reshaping, flesh swelling and tearing, until three beasts the size of warhorses rose before them.

”Behind me!” Zarek shouted, positioning himself between Yelena and the monsters. His sword sang as he engaged them, his movements precise and economical. He was good—she would grant him that much—but against creatures born of ancient magic, skill with steel could only carry one so far.

Far from the battlefield, nestled in the blood-red mountains that ringed this pocket dimension, a different kind of battle was taking place.

The cave was dark, lit only by the faint luminescence of crystallized astral energy that lined its walls like veins of precious ore. The air was warm, heavy with the scent of ozone and something more primal. Something that had been building for hours.

Sigrid had opened her eyes in this cave alone, and for ten terrifying minutes, she had believed she would die here.

She came from a minor baron family, barely clinging to relevance in the cutthroat world of noble politics. A healer by trade and inclination, she possessed enough astral energy to qualify as a realm master, but her power was measured in mending flesh, not rending it. When the beasts had found her, she had managed to hold them off for only a few moments before one of them—a hulking creature with claws like obsidian daggers—had raked its talons across her stomach.

She had felt the blood. Felt her own life leaking away.

Is this it? she had thought, her vision swimming as she pressed a trembling hand against her wound. I didn’t even survive ten minutes... Why am I so weak? If only Zarek were here. He would protect me. He always protects me.

But Zarek was not here. And the beasts were closing in.

Then, something had happened. Something that still made her heart race when she thought about it.

The monsters had been bisected—not one by one, but all of them, simultaneously, their bodies reduced to shreds of meat that rained down around her like a grotesque blessing. She had looked up, disoriented, and there he was.

Lucien Vale stood on a cliff above her, his golden hair cascading past his shoulders like captured sunlight. His eyes were the color of molten amber, warm and utterly captivating. His black jacket was open, revealing a sculpted chest that spoke of power cultivated over years of rigorous training. His smile was like the first warmth of spring after a bitter winter.

She knew who he was. Everyone knew who he was.

Champion of Princess Sylvie. The youngest to ever reach the peak Spirit Forge realm. The revivor of the fallen Vale family—a name once whispered with reverence and now with something closer to awe. He had reclaimed his legacy through sheer force of will, carving his way through the world with a blade that sang with astral fire.

And now he was floating down to her, defying gravity as casually as she might take a step, his feet not touching the ground until he was directly before her.

”Are you hurt?” he asked, his voice a rich baritone that seemed to resonate in her very bones.

”I—I’m fine, Lord Lucien,” she stammered, feeling heat bloom across her cheeks. Her engagement ring suddenly felt heavy on her finger—a constant reminder of Zarek, of the promise she had made to a man who was, in every conceivable way, a candle flame before this sun.

Then she felt the pain again, sharp and burning, and gasped.

Lucien was at her side in an instant, lifting her into his arms as if she weighed nothing. He carried her deeper into the cave, his powerful legs propelling them through the air as he flew—flew!—to a more secluded chamber. The sensation of weightlessness made her gasp, and she clutched his shoulders instinctively.

People who could fly in the Human Realm were so rare they could be counted on one’s fingers. She knew Lucien was powerful, but this... this was something else entirely.

He set her down on a smooth stone outcropping, his hands gentle despite their obvious strength. His fingers found the torn fabric of her healer’s robes, tracing the wound beneath with a feather-light touch. His face was close to hers now, and she could smell him—cinnamon and sandalwood, with an undertone of something wilder.

”It seems no one else has awakened yet,” he observed with that same warm smile. ”The trial’s initial separation is supposed to scatter us, but this is unusually thorough. We’ll need to wait for the others to find us.”

Sigrid nodded, not trusting her voice. She could heal herself—she should heal herself—but somehow her hands remained at her sides. Perhaps she had forgotten. Perhaps she simply didn’t want to break the moment.

Her green hair, longer than her shoulders but not yet reaching her waist, was tangled and wild. The eternal flower in her hair—the one Zarek had given her—remained perfectly pristine, a symbol of love that now felt like a weight around her neck. Her healer’s robes, modest and traditional, covered her from throat to ankle, a reflection of her station and her modest means. She was not wealthy like Yelena, not powerful like Lucien.

She was just Sigrid, and she was suddenly, desperately aware of how much she wanted to be more.

Lucien’s hand moved from her wound to her face, cupping her cheek with impossible tenderness. ”You’re trembling,” he murmured. ”Are you cold?”

”No,” she whispered, and she was not.

What happened next was inevitable, and she knew it even as she leaned into his touch. She knew she was betraying Zarek. Knew that the engagement ring on her finger—so bright, so permanent—was an unspoken boundary she was about to cross.

But she thought of her family, struggling to maintain their status. Thought of what it would mean to have Lucien Vale’s favor. Thought of the power she could gain if she aligned herself with him—power that would elevate her entire bloodline for generations.

I am not doing this for myself, she told herself. I am doing this for my family.

(But the lie tasted sweet on her tongue, and she swallowed it gladly.)

Sigrid closed the distance between them.

Lucien did not recoil. Did not push her away. Instead, he drew her close, his hands settling at her waist as he held her against his powerful frame. And Sigrid, who had been saving herself for Zarek, who had dreamed of a quiet wedding and a simple life, felt all of that fall away like ash in the wind.

For a long while, the cave was silent save for whispered words and the soft rhythm of breathing. Their energies intertwined in a cultivation dual practice—a merging of astral cores that transcended mere physical closeness. Lucien guided her through techniques she had only read about in forbidden texts, channeling his immense power into her core with practiced precision.

She lost track of time as waves of warmth and energy washed through her, each surge filling her cultivation base with power she had never dreamed of possessing. The eternal flower in her hair, a symbol of undying love from a man who would never be enough, became tangled in her disheveled locks—a quiet testament to how far she had strayed from the path she had once walked.

By the time they finished, Sigrid’s cultivation core was so full it ached with potential. She had gained more power in these few hours than in years of diligent practice. Even with Zarek by her side, she would never have experienced anything like this.

Even if Zarek were here, she thought, her body still trembling with lingering energy, I wouldn’t care.

The realization should have horrified her. Instead, it felt like liberation.

Lucien rose with casual elegance, his golden hair still perfect despite their exertions. He looked down at her with that same warm smile, as if they had merely shared a pleasant conversation.

”It seems it’s time to clear this trial,” he said.

The battlefield was a charnel house.

Yelena’s astral energy was almost completely depleted. She had been fighting alone—with Zarek’s pathetic attempts at support—against creatures designed to challenge four realm masters. Sweat poured from every pore, ruining her carefully maintained appearance. She could feel her hair lank and greasy, her dress stained beyond repair, her lipstick surely smeared.

This is a disaster, she thought, staggering as exhaustion threatened to overwhelm her. I look like a common street urchin. If I die here, I’ll die looking like absolute garbage.

The momentary distraction cost her.

A dozen creatures, sensing her weakness, broke through her failing defenses and touched the ground. They transformed in the space of a heartbeat, their tiny forms swelling into horrors with claws like scythes and maws filled with needle-sharp teeth. They charged as one, converging on her position with single-minded purpose.

Zarek scrambled toward her, his sword raised, but his foot caught on a buried corpse and he went down hard, face-first into the bloody mud. He looked less like a protector and more like a fool trying to play hero.

This little fucker, Yelena thought, too exhausted even for proper rage. Can’t even manage to die on his feet. Fuck. I’m dead.

But death did not come.

Instead, something erupted from the ground around her—veins of blood-red energy, pulsing with terrible power. They tore through the monsters like paper, shredding them into ribbons of flesh. The carnage was absolute. In the sky above, the descending swarm was likewise annihilated, and a rain of monstrous remains fell like a dark blessing.

Yelena stared, her mouth agape. This was power beyond anything she had ever witnessed. The display was the stuff of legends, the kind of feat that made you question whether the practitioner was even human anymore.

Then she heard the voice.

”Sorry,” came the casual apology, ”I was busy doing something.”
