The Hidden Monster of House Vale

Chapter 40: Chapter - 40 - The Dragon’s Gambit

Gwenra walked alone through the endless white expanse, her footsteps leaving deep impressions in the snow that stretched to the horizon. She was the only one without a pair, the only realm master who had been separated from everyone else. Just like the others, she had found those gates—ancient, imposing structures that beckoned her forward with promises of challenge and reward. She had entered without hesitation, not knowing where the path would lead.

When she emerged on the other side, everything was snow. Mountains of it, plains of it, a world consumed by white as far as her eyes could see. The sky above was a bleak gray, and the air was so cold it burned her lungs with every breath.

And then she saw it.

A giant black dragon stood before her, its scales gleaming like polished obsidian, its eyes burning with malevolent crimson light. It was massive—larger than any dragon she’d ever encountered in her decades of cultivation. Its presence alone was suffocating, a weight that pressed against her soul and threatened to crush her spirit.

The dragon didn’t roar or charge. It simply opened its maw and unleashed a torrent of pure astral energy—not fire, not ice, but raw, concentrated power that could erase a lesser cultivator from existence.

Gwenra dodged instinctively, her body moving on pure reflex. She imbued her hands with astral energy, channeling her power into a devastating strike. She’d killed many dragons in her life. She’d faced creatures far more terrifying than this one and emerged victorious. This should be no different.

Her attack struck the dragon’s flank with enough force to shatter mountains.

Nothing happened.

The dragon didn’t even flinch. Its scales absorbed the impact as if she’d thrown a pebble at a fortress wall. Magic resistance—the bane of any spellcaster’s existence. Gwenra’s heart sank as she realized the truth. Her most powerful techniques would be useless here.

The dragon moved with impossible speed, closing the distance before she could react. She summoned a shield of pure astral energy, pouring every ounce of power she could muster into its creation. The barrier shimmered with defensive runes, a technique that had saved her life countless times.

The dragon’s claw swept through it like paper.

The shield shattered into a thousand fragments of light, and Gwenra was hurled backward. She smashed into a pillar of ice and snow, the impact driving the breath from her lungs. Pain exploded through her body as she collapsed to the ground, her vision swimming.

She forced herself to stand, drawing on every reserve of strength she possessed. But the dragon was already there, its massive claw descending—

Darkness.

When she opened her eyes again, she was standing at the entrance of the gate. The dragon was there, waiting, its crimson eyes fixed on her with patient malevolence.

’What... what happened?’ Gwenra thought, her mind reeling. She remembered dying. She remembered the crushing weight of the dragon’s claw, the unbearable pain, the darkness that swallowed her whole. But now she was here, alive, untouched, as if nothing had happened.

She fought again. She died again.

And again.

And again.

Each time, she opened her eyes at the entrance of the gate. Each time, the dragon was waiting. Each time, she tried something different—a new spell, a new strategy, a new technique. Each time, she failed.

After her tenth death, she turned back, deciding to leave this place entirely. She would find another path, another way out of this nightmare.

But the gate wouldn’t open. The path behind her had vanished, replaced by an endless expanse of snow. There was no escape. There was only the dragon, the endless cycle of death and rebirth, and the slow erosion of her sanity.

Now, more than two days had passed. She’d died over eighty times. Each death was agony—the searing pain of the dragon’s claws, the crushing weight of its jaws, the burning cold of its astral breath. She remembered every single one.

At first, she’d been terrified. But after the twentieth death, something changed. The fear began to fade, replaced by something else. Resolve. Determination. A stubborn refusal to accept defeat.

She wanted to prove herself. For so long, she’d done everything for someone else—sacrificed her team, her reputation, her very soul to save the man she loved. And what had it gotten her? Everyone hated her now. They whispered behind her back, avoided her gaze, treated her like a monster.

But she didn’t want to be that person anymore. She wanted to change. She wanted to become like Lucien—powerful, strong, able to control her own destiny. She wanted to be someone who didn’t need to rely on anyone else.

’What’s going on here?’ she thought, her mind racing as she faced the dragon for the eighty-seventh time. ’Astral magic doesn’t work. Physical attacks aren’t enough. I keep dying, but I always come back. Why? What’s the purpose of this?’

In this world, monsters like dragons, mantises, and serpents could consume realm masters and absorb their skills. Beasts were categorized into the same ranks as cultivators—Body Tempering Realm, Vein Opening Realm, Spirit Forge Realm. It made sense that this dragon would want to kill her, to absorb her power.

But it wasn’t killing her. It was trapping her. Torturing her. Subjecting her to an endless cycle of death and rebirth without ever allowing her to truly die.

’If it doesn’t want to kill me, what does it want?’ she wondered. ’What’s the point of all this?’

She died again.

And again.

And again.

Her death count passed one hundred. The pain never faded, but her resolve grew stronger with each resurrection. She refused to give up. She refused to accept defeat. There had to be a way out of this—something she was missing, something hidden beneath the surface of this endless nightmare.

She looked around the snow-covered landscape, searching for anything she might have overlooked. And then she saw it.

A cave. An icy cave carved into the side of a mountain she’d passed a hundred times without noticing.

Gwenra ran toward it, her heart pounding. The entrance was narrow, barely wide enough for her to squeeze through. Inside, it was dark—so dark that even her enhanced vision couldn’t penetrate the shadows.

She summoned a ball of light, using her magic to illuminate the space. The cave opened into a chamber, and what she found there made her breath catch in her throat.

A bed. A small table. Bookshelves filled with ancient tomes. Signs of habitation.

’How is this possible?’ Gwenra thought, her mind reeling. ’This is a boss room. No one should be able to live here.’

And then she heard a voice behind her.

”Gwenra?”

She spun around, her heart leaping into her throat. A man stood in the entrance of the cave, his long black hair falling past his shoulders, his eyes wide with shock and disbelief.

It was a face she knew better than her own.

”Darfred?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. ”How... how is this possible?”

She rushed toward him without thinking, throwing her arms around him. He was warm, solid, real. She could feel his heartbeat against her chest, feel his breath on her neck.

”I can’t believe...” she stammered, tears streaming down her cheeks. ”You’re alive? How?”

Darfred wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. ”When we fought them, I fell from the cliff. There was a river—it carried me here, to this hidden area of the dungeon.” He paused, his voice heavy with sorrow. ”But I’ve been stuck here for twenty years.”

Gwenra pulled back, her eyes searching his face. Twenty years. He’d been trapped here for twenty years, alone, while she’d been searching for him, grieving for him, hating herself for failing to save him.

”Let’s go fight that dragon together,” Gwenra said, her voice fierce with determination. ”We can defeat it and leave this place. Together.”

Darfred’s expression darkened. ”I’ve been trying to kill it for twenty years, Gwenra. I’ve died millions of times—more times than I can count. I don’t think we can defeat him.” He sighed, shaking his head. ”What’s the point? We’re alive. We’re safe. I live here now, and that dragon has accepted me. It doesn’t attack me anymore. It just... lets me be.”

Gwenra stared at him, processing his words. ”So what should we do now?”

Darfred’s eyes softened. ”If you want to try fighting him, you can. But remember—I’m always here for you.” He reached out, cupping her cheek. ”And if you want, we could live here together. Have kids. Build a life away from all the war and fighting and competition.” He smiled, a warm, gentle expression she’d fallen in love with so many years ago. ”It would be perfect. Just the two of us.”

”Don’t you want to go outside?” Gwenra asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Darfred shook his head slowly. ”My past self would have wanted to. But after twenty years of peace, I’ve realized that this life isn’t so bad. And now that you’re here...” He pulled her closer, pressing his forehead against hers. ”My world is complete. Wherever you are, that’s where I want to be. Because you are my world.”

Tears streamed down Gwenra’s cheeks. She’d dreamed of this moment for so long—the moment she’d find Darfred, the moment they’d be reunited. She’d imagined it a thousand times, but the reality was so much sweeter, so much more overwhelming.

This was what she’d always wanted. A life with him. A life away from all the violence and politics and death.

”Promise me you’ll stay,” Darfred whispered. ”Promise me you won’t leave.”

Gwenra opened her mouth to answer—

But something held her back. A nagging doubt, a flicker of suspicion that she couldn’t quite suppress.

She pushed it aside, smiling through her tears. ”I promise.”

After talking for a while, Darfred prepared food for them—simple fare, but it tasted like the most exquisite meal she’d ever had. He’d always been a good cook, and the familiarity of the flavors brought back memories of their time together. The nights they’d spent huddled in tents, sharing meals and laughter and whispered promises.

”So,” Darfred said, his voice playful, ”what are your plans for spending the night here?”

Gwenra raised an eyebrow, a smile tugging at her lips. ”Oh, someone’s in the mood for flirting. You want to spend the night with me? It’s been only one day—why don’t you take me on a date first?”

Darfred laughed, the sound warm and familiar. ”Well, we’ve known each other for a long time. And we used to sleep together, remember?”

”Of course I remember,” Gwenra said, her smile softening. ”We always used to hide in that tent and make love. How could I forget?”

”So,” Darfred said, leaning closer, ” Do you want to stay with me? Like old times?”

Gwenra’s heart fluttered.

”I would love to,” she said gently. ”But before that, I want to try defeating that dragon again.”

Darfred’s expression shifted, a flicker of frustration crossing his features. ”But why? Why do you want to risk your life again?”

Gwenra took his hands, squeezing them gently. ”I know you want me to stay here with you. But I want us to be together outside, too. I want to fight that dragon with you, and if we lose...” She paused, taking a deep breath. ”If we lose, I promise I’ll spend the rest of my life here with you. Please, Darfred. Just this one time.”

Darfred was silent for a long moment. Then he nodded slowly. ”Okay. Just this one time.”

Gwenra smiled, relief flooding through her. ”Thank you. I have a plan. Let’s go outside, and I’ll tell you everything.”

Outside, the dragon was waiting. It hadn’t moved from its position, its crimson eyes fixed on them with patient malevolence.

Gwenra shared her plan with Darfred—a coordinated assault designed to exploit the dragon’s weaknesses. She’d noticed that the beast favored its right side, that its scales were slightly thinner around the joints.

Darfred nodded, materializing his spear. The weapon gleamed with ancient power, its blade shimmering with astral energy. He was ready.

Gwenra charged first, unleashing a Celestial Bolt—a purple lance of lightning that struck the dragon’s head with devastating force. The beast roared, momentarily stunned.

Darfred seized the opportunity, activating his ultimate technique. Solar Lance—a spear of pure sunlight that pierced the dragon’s chest. The beast staggered, losing its balance for a moment.

But the moment was brief. The dragon recovered quickly, its eyes blazing with fury. It inhaled deeply, preparing another attack.

Gwenra was still in the air, positioning herself behind the dragon’s head. She summoned her Crystal Blizzard, a storm of icy shards that rained down on the beast’s skull. The attack connected, but it barely scratched the surface.

The dragon exhaled.

This time, it wasn’t astral breath that emerged—it was Wind Burial, a technique so powerful that even a peak Spirit Forge master would struggle to survive. The wind howled, cutting through the air like a thousand blades.

Gwenra’s body was shredded.

Darfred’s body was shredded.

And then there was nothing but darkness.

When Gwenra opened her eyes again, she was standing at the entrance of the gate. Darfred was beside her, his expression grim.

”See?” Darfred said, his voice heavy with resignation. ”I told you we couldn’t defeat it. It’s too strong for us.” He turned to her, his eyes pleading. ”You promised, Gwenra. You promised you’d stay here with me. Maybe... maybe this is best for us.”

Gwenra’s head was down, her expression hidden by her hair. She seemed disappointed, sad, broken. Darfred wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into a comforting embrace.

”Don’t worry,” he murmured. ”This is for the best. We can be happy here. Just the two of us.”

Gwenra looked up into his eyes, and a smile spread across her face—a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes.

”Don’t worry,” she said softly. ”I think it’s for the best. I want to live here with you too.” She pulled away gently, her hands still resting on his arms. ”You go wait for me in the cave. I’ll wash myself and get ready”

Darfred smiled, relief flooding through him. ”I’ll be waiting.”

He walked toward the cave without a care in the world, his heart light with happiness. After twenty years of loneliness, he’d finally been reunited with the woman he loved. Everything was going to be perfect.

He reached the entrance of the cave and was about to step inside when—

A sword tore through his flesh.

He looked down, his eyes wide with shock. A blade was embedded in his body, its edge gleaming with fresh blood. He tried to turn, tried to see who had attacked him, but the sword was pulled out and driven into his back again.

And again.

And again.

He dropped to his knees, his body convulsing as blood poured from his wounds. He looked up, his vision blurring, and saw the figure standing over him.
