The Hidden Monster of House Vale

Chapter 33: Chapter - 33 - Breaking of Reality

The air in the deep woods smelled of copper and ozone.

Gwenra, Isalyn, Fayie, Samley, Halfred, and Ollyn tore through the undergrowth, their boots churning the rotting leaves into a dark mire. They were hunting Morbert and his demonic fraction, but the hunt had long since lost its clarity. It had become a desperate, flailing scramble through a living nightmare.

Since Marian’s brutal death, Halfred had lost every shred of his sanity. To look at his face, one might have thought him peaceful—his features were locked in a chilling, glassy calm—but the astral energy rolling off his skin told a far more terrifying story. It poured from him like the thundering weight of a mountain waterfall, wild and uncontainable. His grief had warped into an all-consuming rage. As he ran, waves of volatile, white-hot flames erupted from his palms, licking at the ancient trunks and setting the forest ablaze around them. He didn’t care about the smoke blinding them; he cared only for the blood of his sister’s killer.

Suddenly, a whistle cut through the roar of the fire.

A heavy, jagged dagger thudded into the earth directly in front of Halfred’s lead foot. The group skidded to a halt, the heat of the burning trees warping the air around them.

They stared at the weapon. The metal was unnaturally dark, drinking the light from Halfred’s flames rather than reflecting it. It radiated an aura so thick, so heavy with malice, that it felt like a physical weight pressing down on their chests. A rational mind would have known instantly that this was a warning from an entity that was not to be messed with.

But Halfred no longer possessed a rational mind.

With a guttural snarl, he yanked the dagger from the dirt, his astral flames instantly imbuing the blade until it glowed like molten iron. Without a word of caution to his comrades, he lunged forward, striking blindly at the shadows where the weapon had flown from.

The attack never connected.

An entity materialized right before his eyes. With a effortless flick of two fingers, she caught the flame-imbued blade, snapping the steel like a dry twig. The fire died instantly, smothered by a cold, overwhelming pressure.

The figure stepped fully into the clearing, and a suffocating silence fell over the forest.

She was a woman, but her beauty was entirely otherworldly—grotesque in its perfection, a cruel mockery of mortal form. Two sweeping black horns curled from her brow, contrasting sharply with her short, snow-white hair. From her back emerged great, feathered black wings that seemed to absorb the ambient smoke of the burning woods. She wore dark, tight leather clothes that clung to her form, emphasizing a striking silhouette that was both seductive and terrifying, emphasizing a striking silhouette that was both seductive and terrifying. A single, high slit in her dark garments exposed a long, flawless thigh. Her skin color was deep and dark—a tone entirely foreign to these lands, proving without a doubt that she belonged neither to the kingdom of Valtheria nor the territories of Faldale.

The sheer pressure radiating from her was immense. One look, and Gwenra’s heart dropped into her stomach. Her instincts, honed through decades of calculated survival, screamed a single truth: This is an entity none of us can fight. Not me. Not all of us combined.

”Hurry! Move!” Gwenra screamed, her voice cracking with rare panic.

But they were already too late.

A violent pulse of violet light rippled through the trees. A massive, translucent shield snapped into existence, encasing the entire clearing in a dome of dark energy.

”It’s not breaking!” Isalyn cried out, her face pale as she channeled every ounce of her divine magic into her staff. Golden light slammed against the violet barrier, only to shatter into useless sparks.

Beside her, Fayie pulled her bowstring to its absolute limit. She infused her arrow with the strongest elemental magic she possessed, releasing a shot that whistled with the force of a hurricane. The arrow struck the shield and vanished, swallowed whole by the purple light.

Panic spread through the group like a plague. They were trapped like rats in a cage, their greatest techniques reduced to parlor tricks.

Zarah looked down at the shattered pieces of the dagger at her feet, ignoring the frantic attacks on her barrier. Her voice was smooth, dark, and heavy with casual disdain.

”This belongs to me,” Zarah murmured.

What is she talking about? What belongs to her? Gwenra thought, her mind racing as she tried to find a flaw, a crack, anything in the entity’s posture.

Zarah drifted down until her bare feet touched the scorched earth. With a careless flick of her finger, the ground beneath her began to churn. Dirt, roots, and decay twisted upward, shaping themselves into a humanoid, female doll-like creature. The construct was grotesque, but what sat atop it was worse—a giant, living scorpion was fused to its upper torso, its massive claws pinning the humanoid’s shoulders while its wicked, dripping stinger hovered directly over the doll’s head.

Seeing another enemy appear, Halfred didn’t hesitate. He channeled the remnants of his broken sanity into his ultimate technique.

”Heaven Crushing Fist!” he roared.

His fist blurred, striking with the concussive force of a falling meteor. The blow connected squarely with the chest of the dirt-humanoid. A shockwave rippled through the clearing, blowing back the smoke, but the creature merely skidded a few meters backward across the dirt. Its form remained completely intact. Not a single crack appeared on its earthen skin.

Zarah tilted her head, her dark eyes scanning the group with profound disappointment. ”Peak Spirit Forge realm?” she muttered, sighing as if she had expected a feast and been served crumbs.

Suddenly, her gaze snapped toward a dense thicket near the edge of the barrier. Her eyes narrowed. ”Come out.”

Silence stretched. No one moved.

Zarah’s lips curled into a cold, irritated sneer. She shifted her eyes slightly toward the shadows. ”Now, it’s just rude.”

Under the sheer weight of her gaze, the shadows fractured. Three figures stumbled out into the open, their hiding spot entirely blown. It was Morbert, accompanied by Tamlyn and Katra.

But something was deeply wrong with the latter two. Tamlyn and Katra stood perfectly rigid, their eyes glassy and lifeless, moving with the jerky, unnatural precision of puppets. They were completely under Morbert’s thrall.

Zarah took one glance at them and let out a soft, mocking sigh. ”Mind control? Hmm. Pathetic.”

For the first time in his long, ruthless life, Morbert felt a primal, suffocating terror. As a Peak Spirit Forge realm master, he had always been the apex predator. But looking at the winged woman, he knew instantly that she existed on a plane of power he couldn’t even comprehend. Trying to fight her would mean instant death.

His mind raced, discarding a dozen battle plans in a split second. Survival demanded submission.

Swallowing his pride, Morbert stepped forward and dropped heavily onto his knees. He bowed his head until it nearly touched the dirt, forcing a smooth, sycophantic smile onto his face.

”Respected elder,” Morbert pleaded, his voice dripping with false reverence. ”Please, give me a chance to prove that I can be useful to you. Make me your disciple. I will gladly become the dust beneath your feet, a tool for your desires. Just accept me.”

Inwardly, a dark, ambitious spark flickered beneath his terror. If I can tether myself to a being this powerful, I can surpass my brother, destroy my rivals, and claim the absolute leadership of my Clan. Let her think she owns me, until I no longer need her.

Zarah walked over to him, her expression unreadable. She extended her hand and gently placed it on top of Morbert’s head.

A wave of intense relief washed over Morbert. He smiled, believing his silver tongue had saved him, that she was acknowledging his worth and granting him her patronage.

Then, Zarah clenched her fingers.

The air went dead silent. Before anyone could blink, Zarah gripped Morbert’s skull and hoisted his entire body off the ground with one hand. She squeezed.

A sickening CRACK echoed through the clearing. She gripped his head with such monstrous, casual strength that his skull simply shattered under the pressure. When she released her grip, Morbert’s limp body dropped heavily into the dirt. His forehead was entirely gone, a bloody, hollow ruin.

A Peak Spirit Forge realm master—a man who could level cities—had been slaughtered like an annoying insect.

”What made you think you are worthy?” Zarah asked the corpse, wiping her hand on her dark clothing with a look of utter disgust.

Gwenra watched the body fall. To her own surprise, she didn’t feel a wave of shock or terror. Her mind remained eerily, unnaturally detached. She didn’t have the luxury of fear right now; survival was a puzzle, and she needed to solve it.

But Halfred was far beyond logic. Seeing Morbert die did nothing to quench his madness. He swung his gaze back to the humanoid scorpion creature, his voice a hoarse, bleeding rasp.

”I need more power...” Halfred growled, his aura flaring into a chaotic, self-destructive mess. ”Everyone attack together! Kill it!”

Ollyn, one of the few realm masters still in peak physical condition, stepped forward. He didn’t waste breath arguing. As a pure fighter, his instinct was to push past the limits of flesh. He began channeling every single ounce of his remaining astral energy, his muscles swelling, his veins turning a burning blue beneath his skin.

He threw himself at the dirt creature, unleashing his ultimate strike.

”THOUSAND WAVE PALM!”

Ollyn’s hands became a blur, striking the humanoid hundreds of times a second. Each impact sounded like a thunderclap, tearing chunks of dirt and stone from the creature’s body. For a brief moment, it looked like Ollyn was actually succeeding. The entity’s torso was fracturing, shattering into pieces under the relentless, crushing pressure of his palms.

But the moment the final, thousandth palm strike landed and Ollyn slid back, his chest heaving, the horror revealed itself.

The shattered pieces of dirt didn’t fall. They floated for a microsecond before snapping right back into place, restoring the humanoid figure to perfect, unblemished form. Throughout the entire onslaught, the creature hadn’t even attempted to dodge or defend. It had simply taken the absolute peak of Ollyn’s power and neutralized it.

Ollyn stood frozen, gasping for breath, completely drained. That single technique was powerful enough to decimate a hundred mid-tier Spirit Forge masters simultaneously. Now, he had nothing left. His astral reserves were completely dry.

The humanoid figure, static until now, suddenly lunged forward.

Its movement defied the laws of physics—a brown blur of blinding speed. Ollyn braced himself, raising his arms to block, but his drained reflexes were far too slow.

When he opened his eyes, the creature was standing close enough for him to smell the damp earth of its skin. He felt no pain, only a strange, hollow coldness. He looked down.

The creature’s arm was buried deep inside his chest, protruding out through his back. With a sickening squelch, the creature pulled its hand free, ripping Ollyn’s heart from his chest and letting it drop onto the blood-soaked ground.

Ollyn stared at his own beating heart for a few agonizing breaths, his eyes wide with disbelief, before his knees buckled and he collapsed into the dirt. Another Peak Spirit Forge realm master, dead in the blink of an eye.

”Noooooo!” Halfred screamed, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony. He watched another comrade, another friend, snuffed out like a candle. The realization of his absolute powerlessness was a heavier blow than any physical strike. Zarah hadn’t even raised a finger against them; she had summoned a common doll, and they were being systematically slaughtered by it. How could they even begin to comprehend the depths of her actual power?

Amidst the screaming and the blood, Gwenra stood perfectly still, her eyes locked onto the corpses of Morbert and Ollyn. A chilling realization struck her.

Why aren’t their bodies merging with the Red Gate? They should be dissolving, feeding the heart of the Death Pit... why has it stopped?

Even in the face of annihilation, her mind remained cold, calculating the variables. But what happened next shattered even her rigid composure.

”Why are the dead bodies not merging with the Red Gate right now? Is that what you are thinking?”

Gwenra’s head snapped up. Zarah was staring directly at her, a cruel, knowing smirk playing on her lips, as if she were reading Gwenra’s thoughts like an open book.

”It’s simple,” Zarah said, taking a step forward. ”Because it doesn’t need them anymore.”

”Wh... what do you mean, it doesn’t need them?” Gwenra’s voice trembled, the first crack in her icy facade.

”Well, the ritual is already completed,” Zarah explained casually, as if discussing the weather. ”Turns out, there was another group of Peak Spirit Forge realm masters wandering through these woods. They all died much easier compared to your little pack. I only came over here to see who exactly was messing with our plans. The original design was quite simple: let all three groups butcher each other, and if I found someone mildly interesting among the survivors, I might have kept them. But it turns out you are all just pathetic weaklings.”

Zarah scoffed, her gaze sweeping over the trembling survivors—Isalyn, Samley, and Fayie. ”Peak Spirit Forge realm... nowadays, the title means absolutely nothing. You are all just cheap, fragile imitations. So, enjoy your last few breaths.”

”But I completed my promise!” Gwenra shouted, her composure fully fracturing. ”I gave everything to the cult! I followed the directives!”

”Oh? You did?” Zarah tilted her head, her expression completely indifferent. ”I don’t know, and frankly, I don’t care about your little promises or your pathetic promise to cults. What I do know is that I have absolutely no use for you or the cults. The Warden of this land has finally awakened. In a few minutes, he is going to eradicate every single living thing here.”

”What? No! I completed the promise of delivering six Peak Spirit Forge realm masters!” Gwenra cried out.

Behind her, Isalyn, Samley, and Fayie stiffened, the words hitting them like a physical blow. The absolute betrayal suffocated them. They had bled together, fought together, and trusted Gwenra as their brilliant leader. Now, they realized they were never a team. They were livestock, meticulously gathered to be marched into a slaughterhouse.

”You promised me you would give him back to me!” Gwenra screamed, tears finally spilling down her cheeks. ”I waited for years! Decades!”

The remaining members stared at her in horror. They had never seen Gwenra lose her cool. She had always been the unshakeable foundation of their group, but now she was a hysterical, broken woman, pleading with a monster. But Gwenra no longer cared what they thought. The illusion of friendship, the years of camaraderie—it was all a lie, a currency she had willingly spent to buy back a soul.

She had spent twenty long years hunting, grooming, and gathering these specific masters just so she could sacrifice them to the Red Gate and drag her dead lover’s soul back from the abyss. And now, the door was slammed in her face. Zahra didn’t even know who she was. Her entire life’s work was nothing but a punchline to an entity that didn’t care.

Gwenra’s knees gave out, and she fell heavily into the dirt, staring blankly at her trembling hands.

Suddenly, a sound like the death rattle of the universe echoed across the entire battlefield.

Every warrior across the zone, regardless of where they were hiding, looked up. The color drained from their faces as they beheld an impossibility unfolding in the sky.

Something was descending from the heavens—something ancient, massive, and terrible. The heavy storm clouds twisted violently into a colossal vortex, and the sky itself began to bleed a deep, visceral crimson. An oppressive, suffocating silence swallowed the world, stripping away the sound of the burning trees. The very air grew thick, greasy, and heavy with absolute dread.

At first, it was merely a silhouette—a colossal, impossible shape that blotted out the sun and obscured the heavens. As it drew closer, the sky fractured. Countless crimson eyes opened simultaneously across its grotesque, shifting body, each iris burning with a primal, ancient hunger that dated back to the dawn of creation.

Jagged, chitinous limbs, far too many to count, unfolded from its torso like the legs of a monstrous, cosmic spider. Tattered, leathery wings stretched from horizon to horizon, leaving thick trails of a boiling black mist that poisoned the air, turning the leaves below to ash upon contact.

Its flesh shifted and writhed endlessly, as though thousands of tormented souls were trapped just beneath the translucent membrane of its skin. Their silent, agonizing screams distorted its massive form, their weeping faces pressing outward against the flesh before being dragged back down into the swirling darkness within.

Every single heartbeat the entity released sent a violent tremor through the tectonic plates of the earth. Every breath it exhaled carried the nauseating stench of ancient decay, rot, and total extinction. Mountains in the distance trembled, their peaks crumbling. Nearby rivers instantly ceased to flow, their waters turning black and stagnant.

The bravest warriors, men who had faced armies without blinking, found their knees buckling under a genetic, instinctual terror that no amount of training could ever overcome.

It was not merely a monster. It was a calamity given flesh, an existence so ancient and horrifying that reality itself seemed to reject its arrival.

Down in the clearing, Zarah looked up at the bleeding sky, a genuine, ecstatic smile breaking across her face.

”Finally,” she whispered, her wings flaring in reverence. ”It’s here.”

Miles away, witnessing the monstrosity from a shattered ridge, Lucien snapped out of his stance. His heart hammered violently against his ribs.

Beside him, Quindic, Rosra, and Kelie stood frozen in absolute silence. Their mouths hung open, their eyes wide and glassy as they stared at the cosmic horror blotting out the sky. They didn’t need a system notification or a master’s warning to tell them the truth: they couldn’t fight this. Survival wasn’t an option here; it was an impossibility.

”Run!” Lucien roared.

Without waiting for a response, they flooded their meridians with astral energy, fleeing as fast as their legs could carry them. Lucien activated his Shadow Predator technique, plunging into the darkness, moving from shadow to shadow at a breakneck pace. Yet, despite his speed, his mind was a chaotic mess of panic.

What the hell is that thing? Lucien’s thoughts screamed as he tore through the darkening forest. Is this what the system meant? A mere ten percent chance of survival? Did I make a fatal mistake coming to this place? Fuck the rewards. Fuck the loot. If I can just make it out of here alive, that’s a massive win. Who in their right mind unleashed such a monstrosity?

To his left, Ashdan was running just as fast, his breath ragged. But a fatal flaw seized him—curiosity. Unable to help himself, Ashdan risked a glance backward, his eyes locking directly onto one of the massive, crimson eyes floating in the sky.

The moment their gazes met, Ashdan’s sanity snapped like a dry twig.

He stopped running. A horrific, bubbling shriek tore from his throat—a sound that didn’t belong to a human. He fell to his knees, but he didn’t try to flee. Instead, he raised his own hands, curling his fingers into hooks, and violently gouged out his own eyeballs, screaming in agonizing madness as blood poured down his face. Just looking at the entity was enough to rot a man’s mind from the inside out.

Above them, the sky began to shatter like cheap glass, great webbed cracks spreading across the blue. The veil holding the world together was lifting, tearing under the sheer mass of the creature.

Ever since Lucien had arrived in this world, he had always maintained an edge, a sense of control. This was the first time he felt true, paralyzing fear. He was running blindly, his predatory instincts reduced to those of a panicked rabbit.

”Lucien! What do we do?!” Rosra screamed from behind him, her voice choked with tears as she tried to keep pace.

”Where is the Gate of the Heart of the Death Pit?!” Lucien yelled back, his mind racing at Mach speed, discarding plans, calculations, and routes, searching for any microscopic loophole that would grant him life.

”It seems like nothing was real in this world! Everything is shattering!” Quindic yelled, his voice strained as he leaped over a falling, blackened tree. The very ground beneath their boots was shifting, turning translucent in places.

”No, it’s not that it wasn’t real,” Kelie panted, her eyes wide as she maintained her stride. ”His very presence... the weight of that entity is breaking reality itself!”

Lucien’s eyes widened as the pieces clicked together. ”The Ancient Breach... it open into our world, but it’s only meant to stay open for a single month. If that thing shatters this reality and reaches our world... everything will become absolute chaos. The human realm will be wiped out in days.”

”Lucien, turn right here!” Kelie shouted, pointing toward a jagged ravine. ”A few more minutes and we’ll reach the Red Gate of the Death Pit!”

Back inside the violet barrier, Halfred stared up at the cracking sky, his mind completely broken, yet his tongue still clinging to the cold logic of the world he knew.

”But... this is a dungeon, right?” Halfred whispered, his voice trembling as he looked at Zarah. ”Every dungeon is supposed to have a solution... a way to solve the puzzle. If it’s truly unsolvable, then how does the gate even appear in the Ancient Breach? What about the Red Gate of the Heart of the Death Pit? It doesn’t make sense!”

Halfred’s broken mind was grasping at fundamental truths. The Ancient Breach only ever contained gates related to dungeons—spaces designed with specific rules, spaces that connected different worlds. A dungeon, by its very definition, was a lock. And every lock was built with a key. Just like the Ancient Temple Ruins and the Veins of the World, specific conditions had to be met to clear them.

This place was indeed a dungeon. A structurally perfect one. But it was also an elaborate, ancient trap designed specifically to farm the souls of Peak Spirit Forge realm masters, drawing them in like moths to a flame.

Hearing his frantic rationalization, Zarah let out a sudden, melodic laugh that carried absolutely no warmth.

”You are entirely right,” Zarah said, looking down at Halfred with cruel amusement. ”There is a way to solve this dungeon. But it is fundamentally impossible for creatures like you. A dungeon remains a dungeon as long as the lock and the key both exist within the system. If the key is permanently shattered, the system collapses, and it wouldn’t be classified as a dungeon anymore. So, when we constructed this place, we abided by the ancient rules.”

She took a step closer, her black wings wrapping around her like a dark cloak. ”As you have so brilliantly guessed, the lock is indeed the Heart of the Death Pit. But do you know where the key is? Have you ever wondered why not a single Peak Spirit Forge realm master has ever found it? For thousands of years, thousands of geniuses have entered, and every single one of them had their souls sucked into the Red Gate. Do you want to know why?”

Halfred stared at her, his breath hitching.

Zarah’s grin widened, revealing sharp, pearlescent teeth. ”The answer is incredibly simple. The key exists... but the key is kept inside the Red Gate itself. Hahaha! Tell me, mortal... how can you possibly take a key to open a room, when the key is locked inside the very room it’s supposed to open?”

The words hit Halfred like a physical blow. The absolute despair of the design settled over him. It was a paradox. The dungeon was perfectly solvable in theory, satisfying the cosmic laws of the world, but in practical execution, it was an inescapable tomb. Anyone with enough power could create an inheritance dungeon, but the laws demanded a solution. This was the ultimate loophole—a perfect, endless meat grinder.

Miles away, through the shattering woods, Lucien burst through the final tree line.

He skidded to a halt, his boots spraying dirt. Standing directly before him, pulsing with a thick, visceral crimson light that thrummed in tandem with the bleeding sky, was the massive structure.

He stood in front of the Red Gate, seeing it for the very first time.

Far across the forest, inside her violet shield, Zarah’s laughter abruptly ceased. Her head snapped toward the direction of the ravine, her dark eyes narrowing as a look of genuine shock crossed her otherworldly features.

She felt the ancient array shift. Someone had just bypassed the logic of the trap.

”How...?” Zarah whispered.
