Chapter 1040: Chapter 1040: First Time Leaving the Palace

Both of them were at a loss between laughter and tears.

Xia Ruqing stepped forward to take her daughter.

”Is this why you ran off for so long and didn’t come back?”

Yue Er raised her fair little face and coquettishly said.

”Mother!”

”I like it!”

”This was picked for me by Yellow Bean personally!”

”Mother, I like Yellow Bean!”

Xia Ruqing couldn’t help but smile smugly.

”Of course, I personally chose Yellow Bean back then, naturally he’s adorable!”

Yellow Bean, hearing his name called by the lady of the house,

excitedly circled around Xia Ruqing’s feet, whining softly and wagging his tail nonstop.

He still didn’t let go of the little flower meant for Yue Er out of his mouth.

This made Xia Ruqing feel a bit touched.

She put Yue Er down.

Xia Ruqing and her daughter both petted Yellow Bean’s fur which was half-wet from the mist, and laughed.

”Speaking of which, these kids were all raised with Yellow Bean’s spoiling!”

”From Chenchen, to Henger and Yeye, finally to Yue Er!”

”All the kids love him!”

She looked at Yellow Bean with eyes full of affection, as she kept petting his head.

”I almost treat him like family now!”

Zhao Junyao wasn’t particularly interested in a dog.

But since his daughter liked it, and the dog was very well-behaved,

he was quite pleased and waved his large hand enthusiastically.

”Someone, bring him a pot of meat and bones to warm him up!”

Yellow Bean couldn’t contain himself upon hearing this.

He excitedly barked quietly while running happily around Zhao Junyao.

This made Xia Ruqing and Yue Er laugh.

Yue Er was excited and ran over, grabbing the dog’s ears with both hands.

Yellow Bean, despite the tugging, didn’t forget to lick his little owner’s hands.

Xia Ruqing hurriedly pulled Yue Er away.

”Be gentle, don’t hurt Yellow Bean!”

Yue Er quickly let go.

Yellow Bean looked at his little owner still a bit puzzled.

With his dog nose sniffing and licking, Xia Ruqing couldn’t help but laugh as she rubbed his fluffy head.

”You silly dog, haven’t had enough of the pulling?”

Yellow Bean whimpered twice with his head down and cozied up next to Yue Er.

Yue Er also sat by him accordingly.

One child, one dog, communicating with each other in their own understood way.

Zhao Junyao wanted to stop Yue Er.

’The ground is cold, how can you sit on the floor?’

Xia Ruqing pulled him back.

”Just bring a blanket over!”

Children don’t need to be overly pampered.

Yellow Bean is bathed every couple of days by a group of little palace maids, his fur is fluffy, soft, and clean.

The Imperial Medical Bureau even specially formulated powders to deworm and disinfect the dog.

So Yellow Bean is clean inside and out.

Ordinary bacteria surely exist, but pathogenic bacteria and parasites are generally unlikely.

Xia Ruqing was not worried at all.

Zhao Junyao thought, since Yue Er had grown up like this without illness, he too ceased worrying.

Just sat on the bed with Qingqing, sipping tea while watching their daughter play with the dog.

In the cozy living room, laughter and cheerful voices echoed from time to time.

Xia Ruqing sighed.

”Indeed, pets sometimes are truly joy-bringers!”

The interaction between adults and children isn’t always fun.

Adding a pet completely changes the atmosphere.

Yellow Bean’s ravenous eating of meat and bones kept the family laughing for a long time.

Even Zhao Junyao couldn’t stop laughing.

”Qingqing, you’ve truly neglected him, as if he’s never eaten before!”

Xia Ruqing couldn’t help laughing.

”Aren’t dogs all like that?”

Yue Er stood up excitedly from the floor.

”Mother, Yellow Bean loves this the most!”

”Yellow Bean also loves chicken legs!”

Xia Ruqing Scooped Yue Er up.

”Then let’s have someone cook chicken legs for Yellow Bean tonight, okay?”

Yue Er replied sweetly.

”Okay!”

...

The days passed quickly.

From the beginning of the year to the Lantern Festival.

Duanning Palace was bustling with activity every day.

If it wasn’t the children visiting, it was the harem concubines dropping by.

But it wasn’t tiring; each day was full of laughter and conversations, with food and drinks making it quite comfortable.

Even Yellow Bean enjoyed half a month’s good days.

During the New Year, there was plenty of fish and meat, Yellow Bean’s belly had grown two sizes rounder.

Following Yue Er running around, his steps were no longer as swift.

Chenchen, Henger, and Yeye loved Yue Er dearly and treated Yellow Bean just as well.

They grew up with him by their side, and each return was filled with indescribable affection.

One would pick him up and scratch him, another would hug him and pet him.

Yellow Bean wagged his tail endlessly with joy every time.

...

On the Lantern Festival day.

Xia Ruqing got up early, dressed and went to the side hall.

Yue Er was also awakened by her wetnurse nanny.

The little girl was fussing because she hadn’t had enough sleep.

Xia Ruqing went to comfort her.

”Do you want to go out and play?”

”What did you say last night?”

This little girl made a pledge last night to get up early and go out of the palace today.

Yue Er, with tear-filled eyes, stopped crying.

”Mother!”

She looked very pitiful, but it was clear she remembered.

Xia Ruqing spoke gently.

”Get up now, you can sleep in the carriage later, okay?”

”Today we’re going out of the palace to visit your cousin Chengze!”

Yue Er seemed a bit dazed.

”Cousin Chengze?”

She hadn’t met him, and occasionally heard her mother mention him once or twice, but she had long forgotten.

The little girl hummed and hawed, not knowing what to say.

Finally, she asked.

”What about Yellow Bean? Is he coming?”

Xia Ruqing tapped her on the forehead.

”How can we take Yellow Bean out of the palace!”

”I’ve had people prepare his favorite meat and bones, he’ll stay home and enjoy them!”

Yue Er nodded.

”Alright then!”

Xia Ruqing successfully picked her up and handed her over to the wetnurse nanny to assist with dressing and washing.

...

After washing up with Yue Er,

Zhao Junyao also came over.

Originally, there was no need for morning court sessions before the Lantern Festival.

But the realm is large, and there are always matters the imperial court officials couldn’t handle.

So every morning he would still go to discuss state affairs, which was similar to morning court.

Returning now from the discussions,

he brought them a simple meal, then they each changed into casual clothes, and the three of them set out incognito.

The carriage was parked at the palace gate, a not-so-conspicuous green oil cloth horse carriage.

But the inside was spacious, equipped with everything, and the palace attendants had already warmed it thoroughly.

Xia Ruqing carried Yue Er up, Zhao Junyao sat outside with the coachman.

The carriage started moving.

Swaying lightly, Yue Er soon fell asleep.

Xia Ruqing placed a hand warmer in the bedding next to her, wrapping Yue Er snugly.

As the carriage passed through the bustling streets of the capital city and arrived at the Hou Mansion, it was already more than half a Shi Chen later.

”Yue Er, Yue Er, wake up!”

Called by Xia Ruqing, the little girl opened her sleepy eyes.

”Mother, where is this?”

”This is your uncle’s house!”

Yue Er was still unfamiliar with the term ’uncle’, her little face looking puzzled.

Xia Ruqing explained further.

”Your uncle is very fond of you!”

”Your cousin loves you too, and your aunt will prepare lots of delicious and fun things for you!”

Yue Er’s eyes immediately lit up upon hearing this.

”Yay, yay!”

”Yue Er loves fun things the most!”
