The More I Invest in My Wives, the Stronger I Become

Fire turned the secret dimension into a furnace.

The ruined wing of the research fortress no longer resembled anything built by human hands. Walls that had once held containment arrays and observation decks now leaned at broken angles, their surfaces blackened and running like wax.

The artificial dusk that had once hung soft and controlled across the chamber was gone, replaced by a lurid, shifting glow that painted everything in shades of blood and ember.

Heat rolled in waves. Metal screamed as it softened. The air itself tasted of ash and ozone.

Kassia’s dragon form filled the space from fractured floor to collapsing ceiling. White scales blazed under the artificial light, each plate catching the fire she exhaled until she seemed less a living creature and more a moving star.

Another breath tore from her jaws. The blast struck a containment bridge and erased it. Steel melted into glowing rivers.

Runes flared once in desperate protest and then failed, their light snuffed out like candles in a gale. Hunters still trying to hold position on the upper platforms vanished inside the roar of heat before their techniques could fully form. Armor glowed bright, then blackened. Bodies simply ceased to be.

What had been a research fortress became wreckage under her rage.

Adrian staggered behind a half-collapsed pillar, one arm raised against the searing wind. His face was lit by the burning dark, eyes locked on the creature that had once sat across from him in a quiet coffee shop, stirring sugar into a cup with ordinary human fingers.

The memory felt like something from another lifetime. Leonard Valen stood several paces ahead, coat scorched along one shoulder, the usual boredom stripped from his expression and replaced by something colder and far more focused.

”Her bloodline is not regeneration,” Adrian said, voice rough from smoke and shock. ”Not any ordinary healing type.”

Leonard’s head turned slightly. The movement was small, almost idle, but the attention behind it was absolute.

Adrian swallowed hard as another support beam crashed down in fire, sending a spray of molten droplets across the floor. The heat licked at his boots. He forced the words out before the next blast could swallow them.

”She is from an original White Dragonoid lineage. This bloodline is rare beyond ranking tables. This is the first time we have cleanly recorded it on Earth.”

The words hung between them while Kassia crushed an armored console under one massive claw. Sparks and twisted metal scattered across the floor like dying stars.

The impact shook the remaining structure. Dust and ice crystals remnants of earlier containment fields swirled in the turbulent air.

Leonard’s eyes sharpened with something uglier than shock.

At first he had wanted only her regeneration a body that restored faster than death could claim it. A perfect resource. A hidden answer to mortality.

A living sample that could be studied, cut, and rebuilt until the secret of endless recovery belonged to him alone.

That ambition had seemed vast once. Now it looked small. Pathetic. A dragon of this scale, this origin, this raw and uncontained violence was not a sample to extract from.

It was a weapon.

A throne.

A living disaster he could control and aim at the world.

”Then she is no longer a subject,” Leonard murmured. The words were almost lost beneath the roar of collapsing architecture. ”She is an asset I will own.”

Several Apex hunters still tried to fight.

They were brave for exactly as long as ignorance protected them.

One squad launched ranked binding nets from the upper rail. The nets were high-grade, designed to pin S-class threats and hold them long enough for suppression teams to move in. Kassia’s wings snapped open.

The wind alone threw half the hunters into the void between platforms. They fell screaming, nets unraveling uselessly in the air. Dragonfire followed in a sweeping arc.

Men burned alive where they stood, armor glowing bright before collapsing into blackened shapes that crumbled under their own weight. The smell of cooked flesh mixed with molten metal and ozone until the air itself felt poisonous.

Another group attempted a coordinated spear charge at her foreleg joints. The spears were heavy, rune-etched, meant to pierce scale and sever tendons. Her tail hit first.

The sound was final a wet, crushing impact that echoed through the ruined chamber. Bodies slammed through distant walls and did not rise.

One hunter’s scream cut off mid-note as the impact folded him against a support column that was already half-melted.

A third unit tried from behind, hoping mass and desperation could succeed where skill had failed. They came in a tight formation, shields raised, techniques flaring along the edges of their weapons.

Kassia turned her head. The motion was almost lazy. She exhaled once. The corridor became a tunnel of fire. When the light faded, only scorched outlines remained on the floor shadows burned into the stone where living men had stood a second earlier.

The remaining hunters broke.

Orders failed.

Formation failed.

The will to earn Leonard’s favor failed against the simple, animal desire to live.

”This is not what we signed for!”

”Fall back!”

”She’s not a target, she’s a calamity!”

Survivors fled through whatever corridors still existed, stumbling over debris and the remains of their comrades. Some dragged wounded. Others simply ran.

Smoke poured after them. Blood streaked the floors. Behind them the white dragon stood in the heart of total destruction, wings half-spread, chest rising and falling with the heavy rhythm of a predator that had not yet finished.

The place was completely gone.

Only heat, ice dust, and the slow, thunderous sound of her breathing remained.

Leonard gritted his teeth hard enough for the muscle in his jaw to stand out. A thin line of blood had already dried at the corner of his mouth from earlier exertion. He walked toward her anyway.

Each step was measured. Calculating. He could sense it now beneath the overwhelming mass and fury, her control was incomplete. The transformation had been forced, violent, unstable.

Power this large always demanded a price. The body that housed it was still adjusting, still paying the cost of shifting from human scale to something that could fill a fortress wing.

Sooner or later, exhaustion would drag even a dragon down. The rage would burn itself out. The bloodline would demand rest.

He only needed to hold until then.

Leonard raised both arms.

Stolen power answered.

”Ice Age.”

Frost exploded outward from Leonard in a spreading domain of absolute cold. The temperature plunged so fast the air itself seemed to crack.

Fire froze mid-leap into jagged sculptures of blackened flame, locked in place like a moment stolen from time.

The molten floor hardened under a racing sheet of glacial armor. Massive ice pillars shot upward from the ground and locked around Kassia’s legs, wings, and throat like the jaws of a frozen titan.

In less than a second the burning chamber became an arctic prison. Steam hissed where residual heat met sudden cold. The white dragon was trapped inside a cathedral of ice, her scales gleaming pale blue beneath the frozen shell.

The sudden silence after so much fire felt unnatural.

Leonard exhaled. Blood glistened on his lip. His eyes were bright with recovered arrogance, the look of a man who had just reminded the world why he stood at the top of the Apex Guild.

”This is enough.”

It was not.

Cracks webbed through the ice with a sound like breaking mountains. The noise rolled outward in waves, deep and structural, as if the frozen prison itself were screaming.

Red light flared inside the shell first a dull pulse, then a violent surge. Heat bloomed. The ice groaned. Kassia moved.

One wing punched free in a detonation of shards that filled the air like a storm of glass. A claw followed, ripping the glacial restraints apart as if they were nothing more than frozen paper.

The entire Ice Age construct collapsed outward in a glittering storm that cut the air to pieces. Shards of ice the size of swords spun through the chamber, embedding themselves in walls and floor.

Leonard’s eyes widened.

She was already in front of him.

The white dragon’s claw tore across his chest in a single brutal strike. Flesh opened. Blood sprayed hot against the sudden cold air, painting the ice dust in vivid red. Leonard’s body flew backward and hit the ruined floor hard, skidding through ash and frozen fragments.

Pain ripped through him so sharply that for a moment even the stolen regeneration lagging behind the wound felt like a distant, useless thing. His coat was shredded. The wound across his chest was deep, the edges already trying to knit and failing under the sheer force of the impact.

He collapsed fully, one hand pressed to the split across his chest as blood flowed freely between his fingers.

The floor beneath him was a mixture of ice, ash, and cooling metal. Every breath sent fresh pain through the wound.

Above him, Kassia lowered her enormous head.

Blood-red eyes filled his vision. The pupils were vertical slits, burning with a light that did not belong to any human emotion. Heat gathered in her throat, brightening from dull ember to violent gold-white.

The air screamed as dragonfire compressed into a killing breath. At that distance there would be no platform left to dodge onto. No ice wall thick enough to matter. No stolen power quick enough to rewrite the ending.

For the first time in years, Leonard Valen faced a thought he almost never allowed himself.

He was going to die.

The white dragon’s jaws opened fully. Fire roared up from the depths of a bloodline Earth had never properly recorded

and the Apex Guild Master, bleeding under her shadow, could do nothing but watch the end descend.
