The More I Invest in My Wives, the Stronger I Become

The black door did not move.

Sana drew the Elorian bow to full stretch and released. Wind screamed down the corridor and slammed into the seal in a white burst.

The impact shook dust from the ceiling, but the door only rippled, then settled again. Corruption energy crawled over its surface like black oil, swallowing the force of the shot.

She fired a second time.

Then a third.

Each arrow landed harder than the last. None of them broke through.

”It’s protected by a corruption core,” Lucien said, breath short. ”Ordinary attacks won’t open it.”

Footsteps thundered closer behind them.

”They’re coming,” Lucien hissed. ”Sana your shadow technique. How long can you hold me inside it?”

Sana’s eyes stayed on the door for half a second longer, then snapped to him.

”A few seconds. Maybe a minute if I push it.”

”That’s enough. Do it. Now.”

There was no time to argue.

Sana grabbed Lucien’s wrist, pulled him close, and the floor shadow beneath them swelled like living ink.

In the next breath, both of them sank into it. The corridor looked empty just as Apex hunters rounded the corner in full force.

The lead hunter slowed when he saw the black door.

”Damage on the outer seal,” he said. ”They tried to force it.”

Another hunter stepped forward, scanning the frame.

”No bodies. No blood trail. They may already be inside.”

A third man raised a command token toward the circular seal. The corruption lines pulsed once, then split apart with a deep mechanical groan.

Cold air spilled out of the opening, heavier than the corridor air, thick with the metallic taste of sealed energy.

”Enter. If they’re inside, drag them out.”

The hunters moved through the gate in tight formation.

They never noticed the shadow that slid under the last man’s boots and crossed the threshold with him.

The moment Sana and Lucien passed the seal, the world changed.

This was no storage room.

It was a pocket dimension disguised as one.

The space opened far wider than any underground chamber under Ashford should have allowed. The ceiling stretched high into artificial dusk, held up by black metal pillars etched with containment runes.

Floating platforms and suspended walkways crossed the air like a factory built inside a sealed sky. Dozens of people moved below researchers in dark coats, armed escorts, transport crews hauling sealed tanks and crystal cages.

The air itself felt wrong, dense and slightly delayed, as if sound traveled through water instead of atmosphere.

Illegal work had a smell.

This place reeked of it.

Rows of reinforced labs lined the lower levels, windows tinted against outside eyes. Some held examination tables. Others held suspended fluid chambers and restraint frames still marked with dried residue.

Warning markers glowed in languages mixed between hunter code and older symbols no public guild would ever display. Everything about the dimension said the same thing:

This was not research for the public world.

This was a private empire of stolen power.

Sana kept Lucien inside her shadow as long as she could, then shifted from one hunter’s shade to another, then to a support pillar, then to the underside of a moving cargo platform.

Every jump cost stamina. Every second risked exposure. One delayed transfer, one sharp-eyed guard, and the entire infiltration would collapse.

”Hold on,” she muttered under her breath.

Lucien’s voice came strained from within the link.

”I am holding. I am also regretting every life choice that led me here.”

They moved deeper.

Sana’s eyes scanned every cage, every sealed room, every transport line. Most captives she glimpsed were incomplete experiments hunters drained pale, monsters cut open for cores, bodies marked with extraction brands. None of them were Kassia.

Then she found the center platform.

And stopped breathing.

The cage there was enormous.

Not cell-sized.

Not even beast-pen sized.

It rose like a fortress of black bars and layered seals, large enough to hold something that should never exist under a city.

Containment pillars surrounded it in a wide ring, each one feeding corruption light into the frame.

Chains thicker than a man’s torso hung from the upper supports and disappeared into the cage’s heart. The structure alone was a confession. Whatever Apex kept here was not meant to be treated as human.

At the entrance of that massive prison, a woman sat collapsed against the bars.

Exhausted.

Chained at the wrists and collarbone.

Hair dull from confinement, body marked by restraint burns, but still unmistakably alive.

Kassia.

Sana’s fingers tightened on her bow.

Why was the cage this large?

No human needed a prison like that.

No ordinary awakened did either.

She had never seen a cage this size in her life.

Kassia remained near the entrance of it, as if even exhausted she refused to retreat deeper into the dark.

Sana prepared to contact Daemon at once.

Then footsteps approached the platform.

A group of researchers and armed handlers came into view, carrying activation rods and monitoring devices.

One of them checked a panel beside the cage with the boredom of a man repeating a routine.

”Subject cycle is overdue. Wake her.”

Another scoffed.

”If she still responds. Valen wants fresh readings before the next transfer.”

They pressed the rods against the outer seals.

Corruption light flared through the chains.

Kassia’s body jerked.

Her head lifted slowly, as if dragged up from deep water. For a moment she only looked tired. Then her eyes opened fully

And the temperature in the dimension seemed to drop.

Sana’s breath caught.

Lucien’s voice trembled through the shadow link.

”...No. No, no, no. That can’t be right.”

What stared out from Kassia’s gaze was not only human exhaustion.

Something vast moved behind it.

Something scaled, ancient, and barely contained by all those bars. The chains tightened with a low metallic groan, as if the cage itself recognized the change and braced for pressure.

Sana’s hands went cold around her bowstring.

She tore open the communication channel at once.

”Daemon—”

On the other side of the city, Daemon’s eyes snapped open.

Sana’s voice came through sharp, strained, and stripped of every usual edge.

”We found her.”

A pause. Breath. Fear she did not bother hiding.

”But you have to come see this yourself.”

Beside her, still hidden in the shifting dark, Lucien swallowed hard enough to hurt. His whole body was shaking.

He had one clear thought left.

I never should have come here.
