The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The grey fog of dawn over the western foothills was violently shredded by the sound of war horns and marching iron. Three hundred Sundergard soldiers—a full punitive legion backed by combat mages and heavy battering rams—poured out of the tree line, charging straight up the mountain pass toward the newly fortified black mithril mine.

Hours before the first war cry echoed across the valley, Vax had materialized beside Zevryn’s lookout post.

”Master,” the miniature gargoyle whispered sharply. ”An army approaches. Three hundred strong.”

Zevryn hadn’t even blinked. With a calm, measured motion, he rose from his seat and triggered the brass signal-horn mounted along the fortress perimeter. The deep, rolling blare tore through the morning quiet, instantly waking Vandermir’s garrison of two hundred soldiers, mercenaries, and battle-mages.

When the Sundergard forces slammed their heavy timber rams against the iron-reinforced barricades, the mountain erupted into a tempest of violence. Mage fire painted the sky in brilliant flashes of azure and crimson, while the shriek of grinding steel, the crash of stone, and the desperate screams of dying men filled the air. It was a brutal, bloody meat-grinder of a battle.

Yet, high up on the weathered ridge overlooking the chaos, Zevryn sat casually on his log. He looked utterly bored, his pale eyes tracking the carnage below with the flat, detached indifference of a man who had watched civilizations burn a hundred times before.

Suddenly, Vax’s form flickered from the shadows beside him. ”Master. Thirty flankers are scaling the rocky ridge behind us. They’re trying to hit our rear.”

Zevryn sighed softly, a faint sound of mild inconvenience.

With a subtle spatial hum, he drew a massive, high-tension composite bow from his bronze storage ring, an arrow already nocked to the string. He didn’t rush. He drew back the heavy string until the dark iron ring on his finger hummed with dense, concentrated kinetic-resonance energy.

Twang.

The first arrow blurred through the morning air, carrying a lethal surge of razor-sharp velocity. Ten Sundergard flankers hit the stone chest-first, dropping dead before they even registered the attack.

Before the remaining raiders could scatter, Zevryn discarded the bow, his dual black mithril sabers sliding into his hands with a clean, melodic hiss. He stepped forward, unleashing the Drifting Moon technique.

Enhanced by the kinetic resonance of the dark iron ring, Zevryn moved like drifting mist across the rugged slope. He was a phantom of pale silver and flashing steel. Fifteen more men were sliced apart in a heartbeat, their armor parting like paper under the surge of piercing momentum.

The final five tried to flee, but Vax shot off the crag like a living stone missile, snapping throats and shattering skulls with brutal efficiency.

Within thirty seconds, the rear flank was entirely annihilated. Zevryn calmly wiped a speck of blood from his blade, sheathed his sabers, and walked back to his log, sitting down as if nothing had happened.

Down in the gorge, Vandermir’s combined force of soldiers, mercenaries, and battle-mages held the line, ultimately breaking Sundergard’s main assault and leaving the field littered with broken bodies.

As the smoke cleared and the shouting died down, heavy footsteps crunched up the dirt path behind the ridge. The innkeeper, his leather cuirass splattered with dried blood and soot, walked up the hill. He stopped, staring at Zevryn sitting peacefully in the morning sun.

A dry, disbelieving smirk crossed the innkeeper’s scarred face. ”Living an easy life, huh?”

Zevryn didn’t look up, resting his hands casually on his knees. ”Who said I had it easy?”

The innkeeper frowned, turning to survey the path behind the log. His single eye widened instantly. Spread across the rocks lay thirty Sundergard flankers, every single one cleanly and efficiently dispatched without a single drop of Vandermir blood spilled on the ridge.

The innkeeper swallowed hard, shaking his head at the absolute monster he was doing business with.
