The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The western foothills beyond Port Vandermir were choked with dense thickets and jagged grey crags, offering a labyrinth of natural blind spots. True to his word, Vax slipped through the gloom ahead of Zevryn, his stony wings silent against the midnight air. Within an hour, the miniature gargoyle hovered back down, guiding Zevryn to a jagged cleft in the cliffside, a cavern entrance masked by thick briars and heavy illusionary wards.

Inside, ten hardened bandits sat around a sputtering camp fire, passing around a crude spit of roasted meat and laughing darkly as they counted their recent spoils.

Zevryn stepped past the tattered curtain of the den without a sound. His pale eyes scanned the room in a single, cold sweep.

He drew his twin black mithril sabers, the steel catching the orange firelight with a lethal gleam.

”Hello, boys,” Zevryn murmured, his voice cutting smoothly through the cave. ”I need to borrow your faces.”

The chaos that followed was absolute and terrifying. Before the bandits could even reach for their scattered weapons, Zevryn struck like an apex predator amplified by the dark iron ring’s kinetic resonance. Steel blurred, limbs severed, and blood sprayed against the stone walls in a merciless choreography of violence.

In the panic, two of the bandits managed to break past him, bolting frantically toward the narrow exit.

Zevryn didn’t chase them. He simply flicked his wrist. Vax shot off the rock ledge like a living stone projectile, trailing the fleeing men into the dark. Within minutes, the gargoyle returned, silently dropping two severed heads onto the bloody flagstones, perfectly intact.

By evening, the carnage had settled into grim, meticulous work. All ten bandits lay motionless, their faces expertly flayed with surgical precision. Zevryn produced a crystal phial of dense alchemical preserving fluid, carefully dipping each face into the mixture to lock in the human essence and prevent cellular decay, before sweeping them into his bronze storage ring.

With the collection secured, Zevryn drew a heavy earthenware flask from his belt and uncorked it. He poured a thick, volatile concoction of alchemical fire across the piled remains of the corpses. A sharp, searing blue hiss filled the cavern as the reactive solution ignited on contact, hungrily devouring flesh, bone, and blood down to absolute nothingness and leaving behind only a trace of sterile grey ash.

Vax perched on a nearby crate, watching his new master work with clinical detachment. A small, dry clicking sound escaped the gargoyle’s stone throat as it thought to itself: I like the new master.

Turning his attention back to the camp, Zevryn began collecting his dues. He popped open a heavy iron lockbox by the bedding rolls, and paused. Inside were coins, but they weren’t the common copper or silver currency of low-tier thugs. Every single coin was pure, heavy gold.

Frowning, Zevryn inspected their gear. The leather armor, the honed blades, the insignia-free iron crossguards, these weren’t standard cutthroat scraps. They were forged with high-grade craftsmanship, far too expensive for common highwaymen.

Intrigued, Zevryn swept the wealth into his ring and walked to the rear stone wall of the cavern. His pale eyes traced a faint, shimmering geometry embedded in the rock. Rune magic. Someone had gone to great lengths to mask what lay beyond.

Raising his hand, Zevryn channeled a sharp pulse of counter-magic, shattering the hidden spell.

Creeeak.

The stone face of the wall slid inward, revealing a dark, man-sized mining shaft descending deep into the bedrock.

Zevryn turned to his bonded scout. ”Vax. Backtrail these men. Find out where they came from, whether they slipped out of a nearby settlement or if they’re being fed from outside the borders.”

With a silent flap of stone wings, the gargoyle vanished down the tunnel.

Zevryn stepped into the shaft, holding up a glowing magical ember on his palm. The flickering light washed over the rough-hewn walls, catching a dark, obsidian-like shimmer embedded in the grey stone.

His breath hitched slightly. Black mithril.

It wasn’t the flawless, mirror-bright silver mithril traded by imperial elites, but it was just as deadly. Black mithril was twenty-five percent lighter and slightly less durable than pure mithril, yet its rarity and tensile strength made it a prize beyond measure, a material jealously guarded by sovereign states.

Zevryn chipped off a clean, heavy sample and slid it into his pocket. He then stepped back out, re-laid the protective rune magic over the hidden entrance, and strategically deployed a series of lethal snare-traps along the approach.

He pulled out his regional map, tracing the coordinates. This sector fell technically within the regional boundary lines of Vandermir’s outer jurisdiction, meaning unmonitored mining here was a direct, illegal violation of state sovereignty.

An hour later, a gust of wind signaled Vax’s return. The gargoyle materialized on a boulder, its amber eyes glowing in the dark.

”Report,” Zevryn commanded.

”The trail leads west, Master,” Vax hissed softly. ”They operate out of Sundergard, a bronze-grade city near the border. The men weren’t just independent bandits. Their rations and gear bear the quartermaster stamps of Sundergard’s local garrison.”

Zevryn’s eyes narrowed into cold daggers. A bronze-grade rival city secretly bleeding black mithril from within Vandermir’s borders.

Mithril, the metal where nations make war.

If Sundergard was quietly harvesting black mithril deposits inside Vandermir territory, they were building a war chest. And Zevryn intended to capitalize on every single ounce of it.

Without a wasted second, Zevryn moved with blinding speed, navigating back through the foothills. Returning to Port Vandermir under the cover of night, he quickly reinforced the perimeter wards around his safehouse and the academy before vanishing into the winding alleys of the lower district.

His first stop was the Salty Kraken. The innkeeper needed to know what was brewing beneath the western hills.
