The Drifting Blade of the Moon [Grimdark][Dark Fantasy][Sword and Sorcery]

The morning sun cast long, sharp shadows across the wide stone courtyard of one of the maritime republic’s wealthiest shipping merchants. A private tryout was underway to select a dedicated sword instructor and bodyguard for the merchant’s hot-headed young son. Ten veteran swordsmen stood in a loose line along the perimeter wall, each eyeing the others with cold professional calculation.

Zevryn stood quietly among them, his storm-grey cloak pulled back to grant unhindered movement, a single mithril saber buckled at his hip.

The test was brutally simple, specifically a gauntlet of elimination duels until only one competitor remained standing.

From the first match, Zev moved with terrifying economy. He didn’t waste energy on flashy flourishes or theatrical lunges. Through a rapid series of duels, he systematically dismantled and defeated the first nine competitors, his footwork flawless and his parries absolute.

Only one swordsman remained undefeated on the opposite side of the yard, a tall, disciplined human mercenary who had carefully watched every prior match. He possessed lightning-fast reflexes and a refined, expensive southern fighting style.

At the center of the patio, the wealthy merchant and his battle-scarred captain of the guards watched from high-backed wooden chairs. The captain raised his hand, sweeping it downward.

”Start.”

The human swordsman moved instantly, executing a high-tiered, blindingly fast acceleration technique that left afterimages in the morning air, driving a ferocious cross-slash straight toward Zevryn’s guard.

Zev didn’t flinch. His pale eyes tracked the micro-adjustments in the human’s muscle tension. As the blade descended, Zev executed the First Form of the Drifting Moon, a low, fluid deflection that absorbed the kinetic fury of the strike, neutralizing the momentum without taking the impact head-on.

Before the human could transition his footing, Zev seamlessly flowed into the Second Form. With a phantom-like step into the opponent’s blind spot, his mithril blade traced a precise, lightning-fast arc that parried the guard and instantly slipped past the defense.

Clang.

The tip of Zevryn’s mithril saber came to a dead halt, resting precisely a single inch over the center of the human’s chest. The wind from the blade fluttered the fabric of the man’s tunic.

Absolute silence fell over the courtyard. The merchant’s son dropped his jaw, while the captain leaned forward in stunned awe.

The human swordsman stared down at the silver tip resting against his sternum, realizing just how thoroughly and effortlessly he had been outmatched. He lowered his sword, exhaled a long breath, and bowed deeply from the waist.

”Magnificent,” the swordsman panted, wiping sweat from his brow. ”I yield. What is your name, master of the blade?”

The human straightened, offering a formal introduction, Alejandro de Silva.

Zevryn sheathed his saber with a quiet, metallic click, his expression entirely neutral beneath his silver hair.

”Zevryn Nathar,” he replied simply, leaving his full drow lineage and ancient titles buried in the dark.

Alejandro offered a final, respectful nod to the drow before stepping back, acknowledging a superior warrior.

As Alejandro cleared the yard, the heavy wooden chair scraped sharply against the stone flagstones.

The captain of the guards, a massive, scarred veteran with a notched broadsword strapped across his broad back, pushed himself up from his seat and walked slowly toward the center of the yard. His heavy boots clicked against the pavement as he surveyed the scene, his hardened eyes lingering on Zevryn’s calm, unbothered posture.

He looked from Alejandro to the drow, a slow nod of professional appreciation finally breaking his stone-faced expression.

”I’ve seen hundreds of mercenaries and duelists pass through these gates,” the captain rumbled, his voice like grinding stones. ”Most rely on brute force, loud stances, or cheap parlor tricks. You move with absolute intent. Not a single wasted ounce of energy.”

The captain stopped a few paces away, extending a heavily calloused, scarred hand.

”The instructor position is yours, Zevryn Nathar,” the captain said definitively. ”The merchant’s boy needs someone who can actually keep him breathing, not just teach him how to swing a pretty sword for show.”

Zev accepted the grip briefly, his pale eyes remaining entirely unreadable.

”When do I start?”

”Tomorrow morning at dawn,” the captain answered.

Zev raised a single, calm hand. ”One condition.”

The captain paused, and the wealthy merchant leaned forward from his high-backed chair, narrowing his eyes. ”Name it.”

”The boy comes to my quarters for training,” Zev stated flatly. ”I do not teach in open, crowded yards, and I prefer my methods kept private.”

The merchant exchanged a brief, calculating glance with his captain, weighing the eccentricities of powerful mercenaries before nodding.

”Agreed. As long as the boy actually learns how to survive out there.”

”Fair enough,” the captain grunted, turning back as the arrangements were finalized. ”Your pay will reflect every bit of what I just saw out here.”
