Rebirth before Apocalypse: My Whole Family are Bigshots!

Chapter 299: Chapter 299: Actually, I’m Really Awesome

The Fan Family couple exchanged a few pleasantries with the Bai Family before quietly continuing their laundry.

They didn’t say a word about Leng Yebai.

Leng Yebai was becoming more and more like a zombie; although he had thoughts, the rotten flesh on his face kept increasing.

Ever since the rotten flesh appeared on his face, he became silent.

The most he said was, don’t let her see what I look like now.

When the bus entered the village, Leng Yebai and Zhang Yiming sensed it simultaneously.

At that time, Leng Yebai was very panicked, almost pleading with everyone not to reveal he was there.

He didn’t want them to see him like this.

The Fan Family couple felt quite uncomfortable; no one could empathize more with the feeling of seeing a loved one turn into a zombie.

They chose to remain silent.

”Leng Yebai is missing, he might have turned into a zombie, can you help us find him?”

Bai Xiqin pursed her thin lips, her dark eyes staring intently at Zhang Yiming, with a barely present smile on her haggard face.

It was seemingly a smile about to find Leng Yebai, yet full of endless bitterness.

”Xiao Niu, don’t worry, take your time and tell me, what exactly happened?”

Zhang Yiming spoke gently, looking at Bai Xiqin’s haggard face, he took out a piece of chocolate from his pocket and handed it to Bai Xiqin.

Bai Xiqin instinctively caught it, but did not unwrap it, only looking at Zhang Yiming with anticipation.

Hope amid despair.

Zhang Yiming turned his head slightly, not daring to look at that face again, and led the Bai Family to the living room.

Bai Xiqin opened her mouth to speak about what happened but got a bit disoriented.

Her heart was restless.

Ever since entering this village, her heart ached terribly.

Perhaps the abundance of zombies here, at the thought of zombies, she also thought about the possibility of Leng Yebai becoming a zombie.

”Brother Zhang, here’s what happened, we were being chased by a bunch of High Rank Zombies that night, barely escaped, but still got ambushed...”

Bai Yifan, seeing Bai Xiqin’s weary look, hurried to explain what happened on her behalf.

”You were chased by High Rank Zombies?”

Zhang Yiming suddenly looked at Bai Yifan.

He truly didn’t know this.

Leng Yebai only mentioned a fall which injured him, Zhang thought he was just careless, he didn’t expect it was due to being chased by High Rank Zombies!

”There were so many High Rank Zombies, hundreds, even thousands of them. Had we not been concealed well, our family would’ve been gone.”

Bai Yifan shivered at recalling that night’s scene.

Zhang Yiming slightly squinted his eyes, said nothing more, just stood up and poured a cup of tea for everyone.

He also brought some fruits and snacks to the table.

They were all what Bai Xiqin liked to eat.

”Xiao Fan, here!”

Zhang Yiming brewed a cup of milk powder and handed it to Bai Yifan.

”Thank you, Brother Zhang!”

Bai Yifan took the milk powder but wasn’t very excited.

Without Brother Leng being found, something still felt missing; even the milk powder seemed less appealing.

Zhang Yiming gave a gentle smile and pushed a plate of snacks towards Bai Xiqin.

Bai Xiqin barely smiled, didn’t take the snack, ”Xiao Ming, if... if he really turned into a zombie, can you find him?”

Zhang Yiming nodded lightly, ”I can.”

”Really? Then...” Bai Xiqin suddenly stood up, but her body swayed slightly.

For days, Bai Xiqin had almost only been drinking water without eating; getting up suddenly, darkness clouded her eyes, and she nearly collapsed.

Zhang Yiming quickly reached out, pressing Bai Xiqin back onto the sofa.

”Don’t worry, with me here, he’ll be fine!” Zhang Yiming smiled at Bai Xiqin.

Zhang Yiming’s smile was pure and warm, calming Bai Xiqin’s heart inexplicably.

”Sigh!”

Bai Anhai sighed, looking at the weary Bai Xiqin, saying nothing.

”Xiao Ming, when... when can you find Xiao Leng? What should we do?”

Liu Jing rubbed her reddened eyes, her voice quivering a bit.

Being a forensic doctor, she still sometimes feared corpses.

What she feared was seeing the corpse of someone she knew.

It’s said that forensic doctors are cold and unfeeling, not fearing corpses, but that’s not true; everyone has a weakness.

This is a weakness one cannot escape.

”You don’t need to do anything.” Zhang Yiming picked up an apple and placed it in Liu Jing’s hand, glanced at Bai Xiqin, ”Just wait for my good news.”

”Great! Then grandma thanks you first!”

Liu Jing rubbed her eyes, full of gratitude.

In the apocalypse, asking someone for help was quite burdensome; just surviving was challenging, and no one would help others selflessly.

Even if Xiao Ming was close to the family, they shouldn’t have asked him to help find someone in the apocalypse.

Xiao Ming had been discovered by humans; if he went out, it’d be dangerous for him too.

They truly had no other choice.

”It’s okay, if you ever need something, you can come find me.” Zhang Yiming donned a pair of disposable plastic gloves, smiled at everyone, ”Actually, I’m quite capable. Don’t hesitate to bother me, if anyone bullies you, tell me, and I’ll take them down for you.”

Saying this, Zhang Yiming used his gloved hand to pick up a fruit knife and a red apple.

Shsss, shsss.

The sound of peeling the apple and the plastic gloves rubbing together was heard.

”Brother Zhang, you’re really nice.”

Bai Yifan bared his teeth, smiling at Zhang Yiming.

All along, Bai Yifan had a very good impression of Zhang Yiming, whether it was from visiting his sister’s school or now.

He always felt Zhang Yiming was gentle and considerate; others spoke of how the Zombie King was cruel, but he saw none of it.

Zhang Yiming continued peeling the apple, slowly removing the red skin with the sharp fruit knife, casually asking, ”You’re so skilled, how come you were suddenly attacked by zombies? Did you offend someone?”

”I don’t think so?” Bai Yifan scratched his head, ”We didn’t offend anyone! We got attacked out of nowhere, didn’t even see the attackers.”

Pausing briefly, Zhang Yiming asked again, ”Did they really have so many High Rank Zombies?”

”Of course! We couldn’t kill them all, had to hide!” Bai Yifan said angrily, ”Didn’t expect the other party to be a backstabber, set a trap for us!”

Zhang Yiming placed the peeled apple in front of Bai Xiqin, then took off the plastic gloves and tossed them in the trash.

His slender fingers reached for the tissue box in front of Bai Xiqin, pulled out a tissue, and gently wiped the fruit knife.

His eyes glanced faintly at Bai Xiqin’s haggard face.

”You should be careful recently. Since they didn’t succeed, they’re likely to appear again.” Zhang Yiming smiled softly.

He bore no hostility on his face, gentle to his core.

”Don’t worry, Brother Zhang, they should be careful of us. Next time we see them, we’ll cut out all their crystal cores!” Bai Yifan waved his fist, his expression fierce.

They’d surely fight back.

Zhang Yiming held the fruit knife silently, simply gazing at the reflection on the sharp blade.

He had never seen her look so worn out.
