Chapter 270: Chapter 162: Playing Unconventionally – Part 2 Chapter 270: Chapter 162: Playing Unconventionally – Part 2 Gu Changsheng returned a radiant smile to him, his figure resplendent and dazzling under the mottled tree shadows, “I have sworn to train them into an extraordinary force, invincible in battle and unmatched in attack, so of course the methods must remain a secret.”

“Hehe… good!” Zhou Mu gave an indulgent smile and continued walking down the mountain with her.

At the foothill of Baili Mountain, the small courtyard was still surrounded by layers of people seeking medical advice. Gu Changsheng and Zhou Mu avoided the crowd’s gaze and climbed over the wall to enter.

Inside the quiet and tranquil courtyard was just as before; it happened that Lau Quansheng’s elderly mother had come to stay for a while with her daughter-in-law and grandson. Not only had she meticulously cleaned till there was not a speck of dust, but she had also considerately aired out the bedding until it was fresh and dry.

The unexpected arrival of Gu Changsheng and Zhou Mu startled Mother Lau.

Outside the door were many guards, viewing the imposing appearance of the two; they didn’t look like bad people. Mother Lau hesitated and then led her little grandson forward a step, “Lady Changsheng?”

Described by her son, Lady Changsheng, as beautiful as a Heavenly Immortal, fond of red clothing; wasn’t that exactly the person before her eyes!

Gu Changsheng, too, was startled upon seeing them, “Auntie Lau?”

If it weren’t for Lau Quansheng’s family, entering this small courtyard wouldn’t have been so easy.

Mother Lau quickly nodded, pulled her daughter-in-law over to make their courtesies, “We have met Lady Changsheng, and… this gentleman, I must thank Lady Changsheng for providing such a good livelihood for my unworthy son! Thank you, Lady Changsheng!”

Under Zhou Mu’s intense gaze, Gu Changsheng embarrassedly touched his nose, “No need to be so courteous, Brother Liu is honest and upright. With him handling the medicine inventory in the Liuzhou Region Medical Guild, I can rest assured.”

The Liuzhou Medical Guild had been impoverished for over a decade and had no family assets; thus, the job of managing medicine inventory had to be outsourced. Gu Changsheng had always liked Lau Quansheng and Lan Zhi’s family, so he had invested money allowing those two families to contribute their labor, taking on this purely profitable business.

Lau Quansheng’s family and Lan Zhi’s family naturally felt immense gratitude towards Gu Changsheng.

“Well, now that the lady has returned, I will take my daughter-in-law and grandson back to the city,” said Mother Lau after another round of profuse thanks, finally recalling this matter.

Gu Changsheng waved a hand, “Auntie Lau, you all may stay at ease. I have fewer people with me this time and will still need your help to look after things.”

Han Qiu, Xiao Cui, and Han Mo insisted on staying at the Dark Camp to take their tests. The small meat bun of a son was led away by his Peacock Master to busily attend to some matter, leaving only Dong Lei and Little Monk Bu Jie, who were still at the guesthouse and hadn’t come over yet.

Hearing this, Mother Lau had no reason to refuse and immediately called her daughter-in-law to start preparing rice and picking vegetables for dinner.

Zhou Mu was sent to a guest room, and Gu Changsheng spent a peaceful half-night researching herbs in the house.

The night passed without incident, and early the next day just as the sun had just risen, the entire foot of Baili Mountain was awakened by the clanging of horse hooves.

10,000 troops from Jiangnan Road came slashing vigorously to the foot of the mountain, led by Du Chenzhi, who bore a look of deep-seated hatred, and his master.

This drew the attention of countless villagers.

“That must be the new City Lord of Liuzhou City, right? I heard he is determined to exterminate the mountain bandits deeply hidden in Baili Mountain,” a villager shouted excitedly.

Upon hearing this from afar, Du Chenzhi’s face darkened a few shades.

Defamation! This was absolute defamation! Heaven knows how much he wanted to coexist peacefully with these “mountain bandits”!

“Indeed, a new official fires up on taking office, and his first act is to burn down the bandit nests in Baili Mountain. This is a good thing, isn’t it? Didn’t the previous city lord’s family get slaughtered by those mountain bandits? At any time, they might come down the mountain to commit evil again; now with this, it’s the end of future trouble!”

People from Prince Mu’s Mansion, hidden in the crowd, had their faces twitch, Defamation! This was the real defamation! Though they were the ones who did that, they did it on command from Lady Changsheng and had no choice!

Moreover, while they quietly acted as “mountain bandits,” when had they ever committed acts of evil?

“That might not be certain; Baili Mountain has recently been plagued by Mountain Ghosts, who knows, maybe this army might suffer there,” another chimed in.

“I’ve also heard about it, they said those Mountain Ghosts gather in groups, and it scared my husband so much that he dares not go into the mountains to hunt anymore.”

The reverence for spirits dampened their joy, and kind villagers began to worry for the suppressive troops, even going so far as to step forward and earnestly remind the nearby soldiers.

Concerns like using black dog blood, and advising them not to respond, were among the numerous ghost-preventing measures discussed enthusiastically.

“Lord, are we really going to attack the mountain directly? Usually, we should first submit a Suppressing Edict from the Court and offer terms to show the generous mercy of the Emperor,” the master asked Du Chenzhi, clearly puzzled.

Coming from the background of a civil official, Lord Du typically shouldn’t be this impulsive?

At the words, Du Chenzhi heaved a great sigh, Pardon! What a perfect approach, rolling his eyes, Du Chenzhi looked utterly constipated, “A pardon… you think I don’t want that?”

But someone was unhappy! He was blatantly being pushed onto Liangshan Mountain!

Lady Changsheng, she was not one to play by conventional rules!

“All soldiers heed the command, a hundred taels reward for the severed head of each bandit, and promotion for capturing a bandit alive!” Du Chenzhi repeated the orders given by Gu Changsheng, then added, “All soldiers must strive to capture alive, a rise in rank and a richer post await you!”

The soldiers, slightly intimidated by the Mountain Ghosts, were instantly stirred up by the high reward, as the temptation of a promotion was too compelling!

Struggling for ten years might not result in a rank promotion, but now such an opportunity lay in front of them; what were they waiting for?

They were each sharpening their weapons, their spirits soaring as they charged into Baili Mountain…
