Transmigration: The Evil Mother-In-Law Is Actually Innocent!

Chapter 190: Chapter 190: Not Foolish but Naive_1

Zhou Shuren undressed, ”There’s no way around it, who would have thought that our family will be moving to Pingzhou next year, and I’m going to take part in the imperial examinations. If all goes well, I’ll catch the exam the year after. If I’m lucky, the whole family will have to follow me. Postponing it a year or two will only make getting married more troublesome, so it’s better to get it done early. Do you think the Dong family wants to marry off their daughter early? They have no choice but to consider too much.”

Zhulan thought about it and smiled, ”The engagement went smoothly today, and Lady Li didn’t make any mistakes, my teaching has been effective.”

Actually, she had prepared for Lady Li to embarrass herself, considering it was her first time attending such an important event. Surprisingly, the simpleton had her own way of handling things, and the daughters-in-law from the Dong family didn’t find any faults.

Speaking of this, Zhulan frowned, ”The daughters-in-law from the Dong family are not easy to get along with.”

Zhou Shuren knitted his brows, ”Now that the two families are engaged, we’ll have even more dealings in the future. If anyone gives you trouble, don’t hold back. After all, you are an elder, and I’ll back you up!”

Zhulan, feeling reassured, raised an eyebrow, ”I thought you would say that if someone annoys me, I should bear it because we will still have to go back in the future!”

Zhou Shuren pinched Zhulan’s nose, ”Am I the kind of person who can’t protect his wife?”

Zhulan chuckled, ”Rest assured, with Lady Donglin there, the daughters-in-law from the Dong family wouldn’t dare. To insult me would be to insult Chu Chu, and Lady Donglin wouldn’t allow it.”

Zhou Shuren smiled warmly; he also believed that Zhulan was not someone who could easily be taken advantage of.

For dinner, Zhulan and others who went to finalize the engagement did not eat, as lunch was too late, only a short while after they had finished. Zhao’s family, along with several children, had their meal.

Lady Li, who had been silent at the county magistrate’s home as if her mouth was locked, had no fear upon returning home and didn’t stop talking. Zhulan could hear Lady Li’s voice from inside the room, describing everything from how big the county magistrate’s yard was, to the decor and the maids, down to what the people from the Dong family were wearing. Lady Li recounted everything she could remember, expressing her admiration and then proudly concluded, ”It’s too bad my younger sister-in-law didn’t go.”

Zhulan, ”....”

Her true colors showed as soon as she got home!

Zhulan lay down for a while, and even though there was no fire in the kang, the room was still stuffy and hot, and she was sweating profusely. The Dong family’s house was large and well-ventilated, not stifling at all, unlike the Zhou family’s home, which was small and even had windows they dared not open, for fear of the numerous mosquitoes in the countryside.

Zhou Shuren, seeing Zhulan uncomfortable, ”Just wait a bit longer, I’ll fetch some water for you to bathe.”

Zhulan enjoyed the service of Zhou Shuren fanning her and tilted her head, ”I’m used to air conditioning, and even if the summer in ancient times isn’t as hot as in modern times, I’m still struggling. And bathing in the summer is such a hassle. Bathing every day these past few days, carrying the bath water must be exhausting for you.”

Zhou Shuren didn’t feel tired, it was just that the activity made him sweat, which was annoying after a freshly taken bath. Rubbing his chin, ”Tomorrow, I’ll build a wooden hut specifically for bathing. It’s a pity that there is no bamboo in the north to make pipes to channel water up, but we could dig a water channel to pour water directly in the hut, which would make bathing more convenient.”

Zhulan’s eyes lit up, ”Indeed, that would be convenient.”

After chatting for a while, the main hall finally quieted down, indicating everyone had retreated to their rooms. Zhou Shuren went to get the bath water ready for Zhulan, and after her bath, she felt revived.

The noise of Zhou Shuren pouring the water was quite loud and could be heard by all the houses.

Lady Li, watching the head of the family commented, ”I lack the good fortune of others, having to heat up my own water, pour my own bath, and serve my husband and son. I wonder when someone will fetch and pour bathwater for me.”

Zhou eldest, ”.....”

This wasn’t even a hint anymore, it was a direct statement; nevertheless, he was disinclined to move, ”I’m only thinking of your well-being.”

Lady Li was puffing with anger, ”Thinking of my well-being?”

Zhou eldest eyed Lady Li’s increasingly round figure, ”It’s summer, you should consider losing some weight. Mother says being too fat isn’t good for the health, and I’m thinking of your well-being.”

Lady Li, ”Do you really think I’m a fool?”

Zhou eldest caught the pillow flung at him and laughed heartily, ”You’re not foolish, you’re just simple.”

Lady Li’s eyes bulged with frustration, realizing that the head of the family was becoming more and more willing to tease her!

Next door, Zhao’s wife couldn’t help but burst into laughter upon hearing this, feeling sorry for her eldest sister-in-law who was being teased even by her eldest brother. Zhou second, covering his face, thought his eldest brother was quite accomplished; he could only tease his eldest sister-in-law like this.
