Abandoned Woman Busy Farming

Chapter 327: Chapter 327 Rongrong and her mother were burned

Bai Yihong was most familiar with Zhang Liliang, he smiled and patted Zhang Liliang’s shoulder, saying, ”What’s there to think about, aren’t you busy with your work? Our two families are so close, there’s no need for formalities. Sit down quick, let Ruozhu make you some hand-grab pancakes for a taste.”

Bai Ruozhu complied and began making pancakes. She made one with added meat, egg, and vegetables for Zhang Liliang. This was definitely the highest level of treatment, she remembered how the Zhang family, all three of them, had helped out tirelessly during the busy farming season. Their kindness couldn’t be repaid even with a hundred hand-grab pancakes.

Of course, this comparison wasn’t quite accurate, who would materialize a bond of friendship? Bai Ruozhu just thought about it casually.

While she was making the pancakes, Bai Yihong was chatting with Zhang Liliang about his recent business. While she was working she casually asked, ”Uncle Zhang, how come Auntie and Rongrong didn’t come with you?”

Bai Ruozhu started to guess in her mind, could it be that the Zhang family knew they would be offering food, so they felt embarrassed to bring more people? But she hadn’t seen little Rongrong for quite some time and missed her.

But when Rongrong and her mother were mentioned, Zhang Liliang’s expression immediately darkened.

Bai Ruozhu immediately sensed something was wrong. In just a few moments, she finished the hand-grab pancake and brought it to the table with a bowl of soup. Then she looked at Zhang Liliang and asked, ”Uncle Zhang, is anything wrong?”

Zhang Liliang sighed heavily and said, ”Rongrong and her mother both miss you guys, it’s just that both of them got injured and haven’t been able to come out recently.”

”What?” Bai Ruozhu was shocked, the faces of Bai Yihong and Lin Ping’er also changed.

”How did they get hurt? Where are they injured?” Impulsive Lin Ping’er jumped in with her questions.

”Burns. They burned some hair and a few spots on their bodies.” Zhang Liliang said and a pained expression appeared on his face. His voice trembled a bit, ”I shouldn’t have let them go to help a relative, they ended up encountering a fire and both got burned.”

’Encountering fire’ meant getting burnt, Bai Ruozhu was very concerned upon hearing. She was wondering why Rongrong and her mother hadn’t come back after going to visit relatives for such a long time, so they had an accident!

She quickly took off her apron and handed it to Lin Ping’er, saying, ”Mother, you take care of this, I will go check on Auntie and Rongrong.”

Zhang Liliang was a bit embarrassed and tried to stop her, ”Don’t delay your business. Wait until you close the stall, then come and visit.”

”Uncle Zhang, I have some medical skills. I’ll go check on Auntie and Rongrong right now. Maybe I can help them recover faster.” What Bai Ruozhu was more worried about was how the burns of Rongrong and her mother were treated, she was afraid that the primitive treatments in the countryside would have left scars on them.

Upon hearing this, Zhang Liliang looked at Bai Ruozhu gratefully and said, ”That would be very helpful, Ruozhu, I will go with you.” After saying that, he looked at the untouched hand-grab pancake, a little embarrassed, he said, ”I’ll take this back with me.”

At this time, ordinary households didn’t waste food. If a friend had offered you something to eat, you couldn’t leave it unfinished or discarded. That would be rude. But Zhang Liliang was now worried about his wife and daughter, he had no appetite at all, so he had to propose to take it back home.

Lin Ping’er quickly wrapped it up with an oil paper package. Their stall often had customers who took food away as well.

”Or I could go with you to take a look. There’s not many customers anyway, it doesn’t matter whether the stall is opened today or not,” Proposed Lin Ping’er.

But just as she finished speaking, three customers arrived. Zhang Liliang immediately said, ”Sister-in-law, don’t let me hold up your business. Otherwise, I would really feel bad.”

Seeing him say this, Lin Ping’er and Bai Yihong didn’t insist further. They said that they would head to the Zhang family to visit once they closed the stall earlier in the afternoon.

Bai Ruozhu followed Zhang Liliang hurriedly, heading straight to the Zhang family’s home.

”By the way, Uncle Zhang, you didn’t get injured, did you?” Bai Ruozhu remembered to ask about Zhang Liliang’s safety on the way, with a hint of apology in her voice.

”I’m fine, I was handling a leak the night before I rushed to the countryside.” He said with tearful eyes, ”It’s all my fault for insisting on another business deal. If I had gone there a day earlier, I could have protected both of them.”

”Isn’t it said that you went to handle funeral matters? How come there was a leak all of a sudden?” Bai Ruozhu asked with some confusion. As far as she knew, at this time in the countryside, very few people light candles or oil lamps at night. People generally get up in the middle of the night in the dark or under the moonlight.

Also, mourning is usually done by burning paper at the grave of the deceased, not in the yard at home; how could there be a fire?

Zhang Liliang’s eyes showed anger, ”I also noticed something wrong. The old man from my relative’s family just passed away, and his three sons started fighting fiercely over the inheritance. It’s possible that the leak was intentional. Hmph, right now, I’m busy looking after Rongrong and her mother and have no time to settle scores with them, but in the future, I’m definitely going to clear the accounts with them!”

Bai Ruozhu was also very angry upon hearing this. One can imagine how furious she would be knowing that someone started a fire in the middle of the night that ended up burning Rongrong and her mother, who were there just visiting.

”So, you’ve been there for some days now, right? When I went to your house before, the neighbor told me you’d gone to the countryside, so why did you only come back after all these days?” Bai Ruozhu asked with confusion.

This time Zhang Liliang couldn’t help letting tears fall, saying: ”You’ll know when you see it. Their injuries were too severe, and the doctor said they couldn’t be moved casually. I had the doctor from Fushou Hall come over to see them.”

This startled Bai Ruozhu, and she quickened her steps. She originally had the impression that Zhang Liliang was visiting them at their stall and mentioned they had a few burns, so she hadn’t thought much about it, unaware that Zhang Liliang was trying to comfort her all along.

When they finally arrived at the Zhang family’s house, Bai Ruozhu was panting slightly because she had walked too fast. She didn’t bother to rest but rushed straight in, going to see Rongrong and her mother immediately. But when she saw them, she was rooted to the spot in shock and covered her mouth as she started to weep.

How did the healthy mother and daughter end up in such a state from the fire? No wonder Zhang Liliang had no appetite for food, and also no wonder a grown man would tear up at the mention of this situation.

Almost all of Rongrong’s mother’s hair was gone, and there was a large area of burn on the side of her face and forehead. The wound was covered with a black ointment, but it couldn’t hide the shocking redness of the burn.

Her face, which was originally round, had become gaunt, and the unburned skin was also sallow. The neck and hands exposed outside the quilt had burns, and they were not minor injuries!

Rongrong was much better than her mother, it can be imagined that Rongrong’s mother must have done everything possible to protect her daughter. Otherwise, how can it be that Rongrong’s mother was so severely burned, while Rongrong was much better even though they were sleeping in the same room?

Even so, Bai Ruozhu could still see that Rongrong had lost a lot of weight, and there were also burns on the back of her small hand.

She tightly covered her own mouth, afraid that her crying would wake up the sleeping Rongrong and her mother, and even more afraid that her sad emotions would make them recall their heartbreaking ordeal.
