The magical journey of a countryside boy

The next morning, a sudden shift in the blacksmith’s usual routine gave William the exact opening he had been waiting for. He slipped away from his own chores and hurried to the workshop. Even though he had already exhausted every answer the man had to give, William found a strange comfort in the forge. He simply liked new shapes being born from the metal pieces and enjoyed listening to the rhythmic ring of the anvil, feeling content to share a space with John.

But today, the anvil was silent. Instead of beating hot iron into shape, John was wrapping and arranging swords, axes, and pickaxes, carefully packing them into massive wooden crates.

William stopped at the threshold, shivering slightly as the damp morning air crept into the dark forge. Without the fire, it just looked like an ordinary, empty room.

John noticed him standing there and offered a soot-stained grin. “Still got more questions, kid?”

William went silent for a second, his eyes tracking the packed crates. “Are you going somewhere?”

John paused, looking at the boy with mock surprise. “Oh, what gave it away?” He let out a booming laugh, tossing a wrapped blade into a chest. “I’m heading down to Arindale tomorrow morning to sell off this stock. Need to load up on pig iron, coal, and enough timber to last me through the next season.”

A sudden, desperate thought bloomed in William’s mind. His chest tightened as he prepared to beg for a spot on the wagon, but before he could even open his mouth, John cut him off.

“Kid,” the blacksmith said, wiping his brow, “do you want to come along? See the city for yourself?”

The breath left William’s lungs. “Yes,” he managed, nodding his head so forcefully it hurt.

John held up a thick, warning finger to halt the boy’s excitement. “Don’t go jumping out of your boots just yet. Go ask your aunt for permission first. If she says no, you’re staying right here in the potato patch.”

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

William turned and ran. He sprinted as fast as his legs could carry him, the damp morning air stinging his throat until his lungs burned. By the time he burst through the front door of the cabin, he was panting so hard he couldn’t even speak.

His aunt, who was sweeping near the hearth, dropped her broom in alarm at the sight of him. “William? Heavens, what happened?”

She scrambled to pour a cup of water from the earthen jug, pressing it into his shaking hands. William swallowed it down in huge, desperate gulps, wiped his mouth with the back of a dirt-caked sleeve, and let the words spill out in a single, frantic breath.

Gretchen immediately started grilling him with a barrage of questions, barely giving him a chance to draw breath, let alone answer.

His Uncle Rob stood quietly near the window watching the entire display, a small, amused smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth, clearly lacking any intention to interrupt his wife’s frantic interrogation. William threw a desperate, pleading look toward his uncle, begging for a lifeline.

Rob let out a soft sigh and finally stepped forward, placing a grounding hand on his wife’s trembling shoulder. “Give the lad a chance to take a breath, Gretchen, before you cross-examine him again.”

Gretchen caught her breath, her eyes still wide with maternal worry as she looked down at William. “Why on earth is John offering to take you with him?”

“I told him before that I wanted to see the city,” William replied, his voice small but determined.

“And how are you going to get around down there? Where are you going to sleep?” Gretchen demanded, her voice rising with anxiety. “Arindale is no place for a child.”

“Now, now, Gretchen. We both know John is a dependable fella, and he makes that run every few months,” Rob countered gently, squeezing her shoulder to ease the tension. “He wouldn’t have offered if he didn’t already have the logistics figured out.”

Gretchen fell silent, her shoulders slumping slightly as her resistance began to weaken.

Rob looked down at William and winked. “Go on then. Go tell John to save a spot on the wagon seat for you.”

William nodded so excitedly that he completely lost his balance, nearly slipping right off the edge of the wooden chair. He scrambled back to his feet in a flash, completely unbothered, and bolted out the door. He flew back down the dirt path toward the forge, somehow running even faster than he had on the way home.

Inside the quiet cabin, Gretchen watched the empty doorway, her brow furrowed. “But Rob…”

“I know you’re worried,” Rob interrupted softly, his expression turning serious as he picked up the broom his wife had dropped. “But the kid is sharp. He’s smarter than our own rascals, and you know it. He needs to see what’s beyond this patch of dirt.”
