The magical journey of a countryside boy

The village of Ashbrook clung to the edge of the forest, forgotten by merchants and tax collectors alike. People survived on what they could scratch out of the earth—barley, wild herbs, and whatever small game they could catch in the shallows. It was a hard life, but it had always been enough.

Until the drought.

For four months, the sky stayed a pale, brutal blue. The river dried into a cracked channel of baked mud. Crops shriveled into yellow straws, and the livestocks grew so thin their ribs showed straight through their hide. With every passing week, the wooden bowls on every dinner table grew emptier.

Among the starving village lived a six-year-old orphan. His parents had been gone for two winters, taken by a stray magical beast that had wandered out from the dark heart of the forest. The search party had found nothing but a splintered handcart and blood-soaked earth.

Since that day, he survived only because Ashbrook refused to let him starve. Old Mrs. Hana would slip him a heel of stale bread whenever her clay oven was fired. The blacksmith let him sleep in the coal shed during the bitterest stretches of winter. His aunt, already desperate to find scraps for her own children, shared whatever thin broth she could manage. No one owed the boy a thing, yet everyone gave a little. They remembered his father’s laugh and his mother’s kindness.

But the boy understood the weight of charity, even at six. Every bowl of soup tasted like guilt. Every crust of bread was a reminder that he was just another hungry mouth draining a dying village.

That morning, his aunt stood over the table, dividing what was left of the breakfast. It was a single, pathetic bowl of watery porridge meant to stretch between three cousins and four mouths. Without a word, she pushed the bowl away from herself, sliding it directly toward him.

He immediately shoved it back. ”You should eat.”

She offered a small, tired smile. ”I’m not hungry, love.”

”You’re lying,” the boy said, staring at her. ”Your stomach was growling all through the night. I heard it.”

Her smile faltered, a flash of exhaustion crossing her face. ”You heard that?”

He nodded firmly, crossing his arms.

She sighed, gently nudging the bowl toward him a second time. ”Eat, William. Please.”

He looked down at the gray gruel, then shook his head and stood up from the bench. ”I’ll go find something.”

”There is nothing left in the fields, child.”

”I’ll look near the forest line.”

His aunt’s face paled instantly. ”The forest?”

”Only the very edge,” he insisted, backing toward the door. ”I won’t go into the thick of it. Just where everyone gathers the autumn mushrooms.”

She hesitated, her eyes darting to her own children, then back to the empty cupboard. Finally, she let out a defeated breath. ”...Come back before the sun hits the treeline.”

”I promise.”William ran towards the forest line while deliberately avoiding the Mrs Hana’s bakery unable to bear anymore guilt.

The forest greeted him with an immediate, merciful shade. Compared to the baking, dust-choked fields, the woods felt almost alive. William spent hours on his knees, searching beneath briars, pulling wild roots from the hardened dirt, and clawing up bitter tubers hidden beneath layers of rotting leaves.

By afternoon, his stomach was roaring. He sat back on his heels, inspecting the single tuber he had managed to unearth. It was a miserable thing—dirty, misshapen, and bound to taste like medicine. Still, it was food.

He raised it to his mouth, tilting his head back to take a bite, when a heavy crunch broke the silence of the brush.

Stick... step... stick... step.

The footsteps were slow and deliberate.

”Kid,” a dry voice called out.

William spun around, dropping his hand. An old man was emerging from between two massive oaks. His gray hair hung in tangled mats over his shoulders, and his beard looked as though a family of thrushes had tried to build a nest inside it. His robe was a disaster of patched rags stitched together so many times the original fabric was entirely gone. He leaned heavily upon a crooked wooden staff, polished smooth by decades of gripping fingers.

He looked like a strong gust of wind might blow him over, yet his eyes were strangely bright. Clear, sharp, and lingering with a faint trace of amusement.

The old man smiled, his teeth yellowed but intact. ”Can you tell an old traveler where the nearest well is?”

William hesitated, clutching the tuber tighter. ”There’s a village just past the ridge... but you shouldn’t bother.”

”Oh? And why is that?”

”There isn’t any food,” the boy said flatly. ”The drought ruined everything. We barely have enough to survive . If you’re looking to for a hot meal, you’re going to be disappointed.”

The old man rubbed his stomach , letting out a theatrical groan. ”Ah... now that is truly unfortunate. I’ve been walking the high roads for days. I’m starving.”

William looked down at the dirty tuber in his fist. His own stomach gave a loud, treacherous growl. He swallowed hard, looking at the man’s frail, dusty frame. Slowly, he extended his arm.

”Here.”

The old man blinked, genuinely caught off guard. ”For me?”

”It’s all I found today,” William muttered, looking away. ”But you need it more than I do.”

The old man’s eyes narrowed, studying the boy’s face. ”Are you sure about that, little one?”

William nodded, his chin coming up. ”You’re much older. You’ll probably die first.”

The old man stared for a beat, then burst into a hearty, chest-deep laugh that shook his ragged shoulders. ”What terrifyingly practical logic!”

”It’s true,” William muttered.

The traveler accepted the offering. Without bothering to wipe away the dark soil, he took a massive bite.

Crunch.

Silence stretched between them as the old man chewed thoughtfully. Then, his forehead puckered into a deep, disgusted frown. He stared down at the half-eaten tuber. ”This... is absolutely terrible.”

William froze.

”So dry,” the old man complained, smacking his lips with a grimace. ”So bitter. I’ve eaten dried pine bark with more sweetness than this. This might truly be the worst tuber I have ever encountered in all my travels.”

William’s ears burned hot. His tiny fists clenched at his sides, his chest heaving with sudden indignation. He marched right up to the traveler, reaching out. ”If it’s that bad, give it back!”

”What?”

”You insulted my tuber,” William demanded, his voice cracking. ”I dug it up. If you hate it, give it back.”

For several tense seconds, the tiny boy and the towering, ragged traveler simply glared at one another. Then, the old man erupted again, his laughter ringing through the quiet canopy.

”Hahaha! Oh, I like you, kid. Truly.”

”I wasn’t joking,” William snapped.

”I know,” the man chuckled, wiping a tear from his weathered eye. ”That makes it entirely better.” He looked down at the remaining scrap of root, his expression softening into something genuinely apologetic. ”I would gladly pay you for your tuber, my boy, but I am entirely lacking in coin.”

William instantly thrust his hand out again. ”I don’t care I want my tuber back.”

”My dear child, I’ve already swallowed it,” the old man said, tapping his throat with a chuckle.

”You said it tasted bad. If it was bad, you shouldn’t have finished it.”

”You are a fascinating creature,” the traveler remarked, resting both of his gnarled hands on top of his walking stick. ”Since I can neither return your property nor offer you gold, it seems I shall have to work off my debt.”

William squinted at him skeptically. ”You’re going to work?”

”Indeed.”

”But... you’re old,” the boy said, looking at the man’s frail posture. ”You might break your back.”

The old man went completely speechless, his mouth hanging open for a moment before he shook his head in sheer delight. ”Do not worry for my bones, kid. This old spine has a bit of steel left in it. What needs doing?”

” What will you do?” William asked

” A little gardening, perhaps” replied old man with the same amused expression.

William looked back toward the distant, shimmering heat of the valley. ” There’s nothing left to garden, and the river is gone.”

The old man followed his gaze, looking out toward the dusty roofs of Ashbrook. A faint, unreadable smile touched his lips. ”We’ll see about that.”

The walk back to the village was entirely silent. As they entered the village, the drought showed itself at every turn. The neighbors looked like ghosts walking among timber. Children sat listlessly in the dirt, too tired to play, and not a single wisp of smoke rose from the hearths. The whole village felt like it was waiting for something that would never come.

The old man stopped near the village well. His smile completely vanished as he took in the hollow cheeks of the women and the cracked palms of the farmers. ”So... it really is this grim.”

William nodded, kicking a loose stone. ”Told you.”

The old man closed his eyes.

The noise of the insects died away. The hot wind ceased to blow. The entire world seemed to hold its breath. The old man said nothing. He simply raised his worn wooden staff and gave it a casual wave.

An Unnatural chill swept past William. It wasn’t cold enough to make him shudder, but every single hair on his arms stood on end. The air grew thick and heavy with the scent of rain.

William gasped, looking up. ”What did you—”

BOOM

A deafening peal of thunder split the heavens, so loud it rattled the window panes of the nearest cabins. Startled cries echoed from the doorways as villagers stumbled outside.

William looked up, his jaw dropping. Dark purple-black clouds raced in from every horizon, swallowing the sky above Ashbrook Within heartbeats, the blinding sun was completely covered.

Then, a fat, heavy drop of water smacked against the bridge of William’s nose. Another caught his cheek.

And then the sky simply gave way.

It was a torrential downpour—heavy, relentless, and sweet. The parched earth drank greedily, the dust turning to rich, dark mud within seconds. Across the lane, children began to scream with laughter, dancing in the streams pouring off the thatch roofs. Women fell to their knees in the mud, weeping openly as they held their faces to the downpour. Farmers threw their arms wide, thanking gods they had cursed only yesterday.

William stood entirely frozen, his clothes instantly soaked through, his hair plastered to his forehead. Water ran down his chin as he slowly turned his head to look beside him.

The old man was just standing there, watching the chaos of joy with an expression of profound ancient loneliness.

”What...” William whispered, his voice trembling. ”What was that?”

The old man didn’t look down. He kept his eyes on the gray sheets of falling water. ”A tuber’s worth of magic.”

”Is it real?”

”It is.”

William stared, his heart hammering against his ribs. ”You... you made it rain.”

The old man merely offered that small, knowing smile.

”Who are you?”

”No one of importance, kid.”

”That’s not true!” William shouted over the roar of the storm. He stepped closer, desperate, blinking away the water streaming into his eyes. ”What’s your name? Tell me your name so I can find you again!”

The old man finally looked down, his gaze softening. ”And why would you want to find a ragged traveler like me?”

William opened his mouth, but the words caught in his throat. He had too many reasons, and none at all. He just knew the world had become infinitely larger than Ashbrook.

The old man chuckled, turning to walk back toward the tree line. ”Let us make a bargain then, little one. When the world finally hears your name... I will come back to hear it myself.” He paused at the edge of the lane, looking back over his shoulder. ”So tell me, kid. What do they call you?”

The rain continued to hammer the earth, a symphony of shouting and celebration echoing through the village behind them. But William didn’t hear any of it. In that singular moment, under the roaring gray sky, only the question of a dirty, ragged old man mattered
