Max Level Return—I'll Protect That Fragile One

Huo Xin’s eyes turned red, she kept staring at the banner on the wall, refusing to look directly at Huo Wen’an.

Huo Wen’an suddenly realized that Huo Xin’s refusal to acknowledge him earlier might not be because she was blaming him; it was more likely because she couldn’t forgive herself.

Because she asked Dean Wang to keep a secret, which led to her having no way out, breaking into a rapist’s home with a knife at night, injuring someone, and going to prison.

She blamed herself for ruining her brother’s future, feeling too embarrassed to face herself again.

”Sis.” Huo Wen’an asked her, ”Why are you afraid to look at me?”

Huo Xin stubbornly replied, ”What’s there to look at?”

Huo Wen’an took note of her awkward reaction, and he already had the answer in his heart.

He told Huo Xin, ”Huo Xin, I have never blamed you. Even knowing that back then you were hiding in Cangshan Mental Hospital, I never thought of blaming or hating you. As long as I know you’re still alive, I feel everything is worth it.”

”Killing someone and going to prison, those were my own choices.”

”You being alive is what reassures me the most.”

”Huo Xin, forgive yourself.”

Huo Xin stared blankly at the wall ahead, tears almost flowing out. She wiped away the tears chaotically and choked out, ”Huo Zui, are you stupid!”

She said painfully, ”Who told you to seek revenge! They are just a bunch of scoundrels; they bullied me, but I was just a fool, tainted, pregnant, miscarried, how could a fool like me know what shame and hurt are! You didn’t have to do something foolish for me!”

”You’re so smart, your hands should be holding a pen, doing research, but because of me, they were stained with those beasts’ dirty blood! You were supposed to have a brilliant future, but you ended up in prison.”

”Huo Zui, you’re the true fool!”

Huo Xin still doesn’t know that Huo Wen’an was kept and humiliated as a Combat Doll by those people from the Divine Martial Realm. If she knew this, she would hate herself even more for asking Dean Wang to hide her whereabouts back then.

These words that Huo Xin shouted out in genuine emotion precisely proved that she felt guilt towards Huo Wen’an in her heart. She wasn’t blaming Huo Wen’an for being impulsive and foolish; she was blaming herself.

She felt it’s she who ruined Huo Wen’an’s life, that she’s the sinner, hence she was not qualified to appear in front of Huo Wen’an.

After understanding Huo Xin’s true thoughts, Wen An’s heart knot also loosened. He said, ”I always thought you refused to acknowledge me because you couldn’t forgive the things I said to you back then.”

”Sis.” Huo Wen’an got up and walked towards the desk, gently taking the cigarette butt from Huo Xin’s fingertips and pressing it into the ashtray.

Gently holding Huo Xin’s shoulders, Huo Wen’an told her, ”Sis, we both made mistakes in the past, but fortunately we are still alive. Let’s not hold onto the past anymore, okay?”

Huo Xin rested her head on Huo Wen’an’s shoulder, shedding tears of remorse. ”I’m sorry, I didn’t know you cared about me so much. I thought I was a burden to you, I thought you despised me. If I had known you would go to those scoundrels’ house alone at night for revenge, I would never have hidden the truth from you.”

”Little Sin!” Huo Xin said: ”My mom treated you as a tool for revenge, my biological father is an accomplice in your suffering, and I am a burden in your life. I feel so heartbroken for you, what kind of scoundrel like me has the right to acknowledge you?”

”Nonsense!” Huo Wen’an told her: ”Huo Qinyou wronged me, Huo Wei wronged me too. But you, you are the only one who didn’t wrong me. Because you’re alive, I have family.”

Upon hearing this, Huo Xin cried even more uncontrollably.

Zheng Lie, upon seeing this scene, perhaps had his feelings stirred, looked as if he was about to cry too.

Song Chi, seemingly born insensitive to human joys and sorrows, maintained his poker face. Next to him, Xu Xingguang stayed silent.

She was a writer, she wrote about the joys and sorrows of the world, yet she loved the happy endings most.

After the siblings’ emotions calmed down somewhat, Xu Xingguang then asked, ”Sister Xin, you mentioned that after Dean Wang died, Huo Wei proactively sought you both. What exactly did he do to you?”

Huo Xin furrowed her brow into several lines and said in a cold voice, ”He imprisoned us in his house, subjected us to severe interrogation, demanding us to hand over things he wanted.”

”What things?” Xu Xingguang asked.

Huo Xin shook her head, she said, ”In fact, to this day I still don’t know what exactly Huo Wei wanted. According to what he said, those things are related to the Cangshan Mental Hospital, so, after Dean Wang’s death, he concluded those things were with me and Wang Yue.”
