Chapter 49: Chapter 49: the heroine’s proposal

Chapter 41: The Heroine’s Proposal

The presentations continued one after another.

Mr. Alden Crawford proposed an annual charity gala that would invite alumni, business leaders, and local patrons to support the Foundation through a formal fundraising evening.

It was organized.

Traditional.

Mrs. Bennett offered a few encouraging remarks before inviting the next student forward.

Another freshman suggested an alumni donation campaign.

Someone else proposed a charity concert in collaboration with the University’s Music Society.

Each proposal brought something different to the table.

Some emphasized fundraising.

Others focused on publicity.

Some were practical.

Others were ambitious.

Anthony listened quietly throughout, occasionally making brief notes in the notebook resting before him.

Time slipped by almost unnoticed.

Mrs. Bennett glanced once more at the attendance sheet.

”Miss Amelia Hartwell.”

Amelia stood with perhaps a little too much enthusiasm, nearly bumping into the edge of her desk before laughing at herself.

The classroom responded with a few amused smiles.

She walked confidently to the front.

”My proposal...”

”...is a Community Charity Fair.”

Unlike some of the earlier presenters, Amelia barely looked at her notes.

Instead, she spoke naturally.

”I think people are more willing to support something when they enjoy being part of it.”

She proposed transforming one weekend into a community festival jointly organized by the Foundation and the University.

Food stalls.

Student performances.

Children’s games.

Local artisans.

Handmade crafts.

”A fundraiser doesn’t always have to feel like a fundraiser.”

She smiled.

”If families leave with happy memories...”

”They’ll want to come back the following year.”

Mrs. Bennett nodded thoughtfully.

”A very engaging proposal.”

Anthony made a brief note.

”Thank you, Miss Hartwell.”

Amelia bowed before returning to her seat with a relieved grin.

Mrs. Bennett adjusted her glasses. Then...

”Miss Eleanor Hayes.”

Eleanor rose calmly.

There wasn’t the slightest trace of nervousness in her expression.

Her proposal reflected the same composed personality.

She recommended establishing structured sponsorship partnerships with local businesses.

Different sponsorship levels.

Annual reports.

Transparent accounting.

Recognition events for long-term supporters.

”If organizations clearly understand how their contributions are being used...”

”They’ll be more willing to continue supporting the Foundation year after year.”

Mrs. Bennett asked two short questions regarding administration.

Eleanor answered both immediately.

Anthony wrote another brief observation before giving a small nod.

”Thank you, Miss Hayes.”

Eleanor inclined her head and returned to her seat.

Three more students presented.

The room remained attentive.

By now, everyone had settled into the rhythm of the morning.

Mrs. Bennett turned another page.

”Lady Evelyn Sinclair.”

Almost instinctively...

The classroom grew quieter.

Vivienne straightened slightly.

...It’s finally her turn.

She had been waiting for this moment ever since the assignment had been announced.

In the original novel...

This was the proposal that had been chosen.

Evelyn walked to the front without haste.

There was no dramatic confidence.

No visible nervousness.

Simply quiet composure.

She opened her notebook.

”My proposal...”

”...focuses on building communities that eventually no longer need our help.”

Several students immediately looked up.

Even those who had been absentmindedly reviewing their own notes gave her their full attention.

Evelyn continued.

”When people think about charity...”

”They usually think about providing assistance.”

”I’d like to approach it differently.”

She paused.

”What if our goal wasn’t simply to help people today...”

”...but to help them help themselves tomorrow?”

Silence settled naturally over the classroom.

Rather than asking professionals to donate money...

She proposed asking them to donate knowledge.

Doctors could volunteer health education.

Teachers could conduct literacy workshops.

Carpenters could introduce basic home repairs.

Tailors could teach sewing.

Accountants could teach household budgeting.

Business owners could share entrepreneurial experience.

”The Foundation becomes the coordinator.”

”Partner organizations provide the venues.”

”Businesses sponsor the necessary materials.”

”But the greatest contribution...”

”...is knowledge that remains long after the workshop ends.”

Not a single person interrupted.

The room simply listened.

Mrs. Bennett folded her hands.

”Lady Sinclair.”

”If the Foundation were unable to secure enough professionals willing to volunteer consistently...”

”How would you address that?”

Evelyn answered almost immediately.

”We could begin by working with the University’s own faculties and alumni.”

”They already possess many of the skills we’d like to share.”

”If the program demonstrates meaningful results...”

”It would naturally encourage professionals outside the University to participate as well.”

Mrs. Bennett smiled approvingly.

”A sensible answer.”

She turned toward Anthony.

”My lord?”

Anthony remained silent for a moment.

At some point...

He had closed his notebook.

Rather than writing...

He had simply listened.

Finally, he spoke.

”...An interesting proposal.”

”Many charitable programs measure success by what they provide.”

He paused thoughtfully.

”Lady Sinclair’s proposal measures success by what people are eventually able to do for themselves.”

Another quiet pause.

”If implemented carefully...”

”...its impact could extend well beyond a single outreach project.”

He gave a small nod.

”Thank you, Lady Sinclair.”

”Thank you, my lord.”

Evelyn returned to her seat as polite applause filled the room.

Vivienne applauded with everyone else.

Sincerely.

It was still an excellent proposal.

There was no denying that.

Yet...

As she replayed it in her mind...

A different thought quietly surfaced.

...It’s ambitious.

Perhaps too ambitious.

She understood what Evelyn wanted to accomplish.

It was admirable.

It was compassionate.

It painted a future where communities no longer depended on charity because they possessed the skills to stand on their own.

But...

Reality rarely unfolded so neatly.

A doctor could volunteer an afternoon.

That afternoon alone would never make someone medically knowledgeable.

A carpenter could demonstrate a repair.

A tailor could teach a simple stitch.

An accountant could explain budgeting.

They could inspire.

They could spark curiosity.

But genuine expertise required months.

Years.

Sometimes decades.

A single workshop can open a door.

It cannot carry someone all the way through it.

If the long-term goal was true independence...

Wouldn’t those communities still need proper vocational training?

Continued education?

Ongoing mentorship?

Vivienne lowered her gaze to her notebook.

It’s a beautiful vision.

I just don’t think it’s enough on its own.

For the first time since remembering the original novel...

She found herself quietly disagreeing with one of its most celebrated moments.

Not because Evelyn’s idea lacked merit.

But because life itself was often less forgiving than ideals.

Mrs. Bennett glanced back down at the attendance sheet.

”Miss Claire Whitmore.”

Claire looked mildly startled before standing.

She smoothed the front of her skirt and walked toward the front with a single neatly folded sheet of paper in her hands.

”My proposal...”

”...is called Books Beyond the Shelf.”

She explained that universities, bookstores, libraries, and even private households often had books that were no longer being used.

Rather than allowing them to gather dust on forgotten shelves, the Foundation could collect them and organize mobile libraries, community reading circles, and literacy workshops in underserved neighborhoods.

”The books themselves aren’t the fundraiser.”

Claire admitted with a shy smile.

”They’re the beginning.”

”The reading events could invite local cafés, publishers, and businesses to sponsor activities.”

”Children receive books.”

”Families spend time together.”

”And sponsors support something that continues growing.”

Mrs. Bennett smiled warmly.

”A thoughtful proposal.”

Anthony offered a small nod before making one final note.

”Thank you, Miss Whitmore.”

Claire bowed politely and returned to her seat, looking visibly relieved.

Vivienne smiled at her.

Claire smiled back just as quietly.

Mrs. Bennett glanced toward the clock mounted above the classroom door.

”I believe this is a good place to pause.”

”We’ve made excellent progress this morning.”

”We’ll continue our discussion after lunch.”

A collective sigh of relief spread throughout the room.

Notebooks closed.

Chairs slid back.

Conversations slowly replaced the silence that had filled the classroom for the past several hours.

Some students immediately began comparing ideas.

Others continued debating proposals as they gathered their belongings.

Vivienne carefully closed her notebook.

Her thoughts, however, remained on only one thing.

The future she remembered...

No longer seemed quite as certain as before.
