Chapter 33: Chapter 33: The Ashford Foundation I

The steady murmur of conversation gradually softened as students filtered into the Foundation’s main hall.

Warm morning sunlight streamed through tall arched windows, bathing polished oak floors in a soft golden glow. Portraits of former patrons, volunteers, and community leaders lined the walls, while glass display cases held faded photographs, handwritten letters, and yellowed newspaper clippings dating back more than a century.

Unlike the grandeur of St. Albion University’s academic buildings, the Ashford Foundation possessed a different kind of elegance.

It wasn’t meant to impress.

It was meant to welcome.

The building carried the quiet warmth of a place that had been filled with purpose for generations.

Claire turned slowly in place, taking everything in.

”...It’s beautiful.”

Amelia nodded in agreement.

”It doesn’t feel like an institution.”

”It feels...” She searched for the right word.

”...Comfortable.”

Eleanor smiled.

”I was thinking the same thing.”

”It feels lived in.”

”As though every corner has a story.”

Vivienne looked around the hall.

She couldn’t help but smile.

The novel had described the Ashford Foundation countless times.

Yet standing here herself...

It somehow felt even more special.

Students from every year filled the spacious hall.

Returning volunteers greeted one another like old friends, while first-years looked around with varying degrees of curiosity and anticipation.

Faculty members chatted comfortably with senior students, giving the entire morning an atmosphere that felt remarkably relaxed.

It didn’t feel like an orientation.

It felt like a reunion that had simply grown a little larger.

The four girls eventually found four empty seats near the middle of the hall.

Close enough to clearly see the stage.

Far enough back to take in the entire room.

Claire settled into her chair with obvious satisfaction.

”Perfect.”

”We’ll actually be able to see.”

”And hear,” Amelia added.

Claire nodded solemnly.

”Both are equally important.”

The three girls laughed.

Vivienne found herself laughing with them.

--

A few rows ahead, Damian stood with the returning volunteers near one side of the hall, speaking quietly with one of the coordinators.

Every now and then he glanced toward the entrance, making sure the last of the arriving students found their seats.

Perhaps sensing her gaze, he looked in her direction.

Their eyes met.

He offered the faintest smile.

Vivienne returned it almost instinctively.

Then, almost at the same time, they both looked away.

The hall gradually settled into silence.

An elderly gentleman stepped onto the stage.

His silver hair was neatly combed, his posture straight despite his age, and his warm smile immediately drew the audience’s attention.

”Good morning.”

”My name is Professor Aldridge, Director of the Ashford Foundation.”

”It is my pleasure to welcome both our returning volunteers...”

”...and those joining us for the very first time.”

Warm applause echoed throughout the hall.

Professor Aldridge waited patiently before continuing.

”For well over a century, the Ashford Foundation has stood beside St. Albion University with a simple belief.”

He paused.

”Education does not end in the classroom.”

”It continues wherever compassion, responsibility, and service are needed.”

His gentle voice carried naturally through the hall.

”Many of you have joined academic societies.”

”You will attend lectures.”

”Conduct research.”

”Write papers.”

”And sit examinations.”

”Those things are important.”

”They shape your minds.”

He smiled kindly.

”But here...”

”We hope to shape something else as well.”

”Your character.”

A thoughtful silence settled over the audience.

”This Foundation exists because House Ashford has long believed that education is a privilege.”

”And privilege carries responsibility.”

”Knowledge has little meaning if it is kept only for oneself.”

”It becomes meaningful...”

”...when it is used to improve the lives of others.”

His gaze swept slowly across the hall.

”Unlike your academic clubs, your volunteer placement is built upon consistency rather than achievement.”

”There are no examinations.”

”No competitions.”

”No rankings.”

”This year, each of you will be assigned to a single volunteer programme.”

”You will remain with that programme throughout the academic year.”

”You will come to know the people you serve.”

”And, in time...”

”They will come to know you.”

He allowed the words to linger.

”Some of you will tutor children after school.”

”Some will spend weekends visiting hospitals or care homes.”

”Others will assist libraries, museums, environmental initiatives, community outreach projects, or educational charities across the city.”

”No placement is more important than another.”

”Every act of kindness matters.”

A few returning volunteers exchanged knowing smiles.

Professor Aldridge noticed them and chuckled softly.

”Many students arrive believing they are here to change someone else’s life.”

His smile deepened.

”They usually discover...”

”...that their own life changes first.”

The hall remained wonderfully still.

”I hope each of you approaches this year with open minds.”

”...and open hearts.”

He inclined his head slightly.

”Finally...”

”It has long been our tradition that each new generation of volunteers is welcomed by the family whose vision first established this Foundation.”

”It is therefore my honour to invite the representative of House Ashford...”

”...Lord Anthony Ashford.”

”Please join me in welcoming him to the stage.”

Applause filled the hall.

This time...

It carried a different quality.

Not excitement.

Respect.

A side door beside the stage opened.

The quiet conversations lingering at the edges of the hall faded almost at once.

Every pair of eyes turned toward the stage.

Anthony Ashford stepped into view.
