What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?

Chapter 700: How To Control An Exo-Knight

We were basically given a crash course on the capabilities of an Exo-Knight in that one lesson.

So what I learned was that Exo-Knights were originally designed to be heavy armour units that can be dropped from orbit during the war with The Confederation.

They worked as both artillery platforms and titan units that would help breach fortified positions and initiate surprise attacks on enemy forces.

Someone then had the great idea to make them spaceworthy by putting thrusters on them and they became an all rounder that can be deployed both as a planetary landing force and an orbital fighting force.

They were basically seen as the jack of all trades since you could just use Exo-Knights to clear out a planet’s orbital defenses with them before moving on to a planetary assault without needing other specialised ships.

Well... Theoretically anyway... Since no one attempted such a thing as it’s always better to have support ships during a battle.

The primary source of power for Exo-Knights came from a crystal known as Prisma which was iridescent in colour and capable of powering an entire Exo-Knight with just a single shard.

The only problem was that it was quite volatile and if you’re not careful with it, you might just blow yourself up.

With that said, it basically means that Exo-Knights have been operating under its maximum capacity for a really long time since the limiters have been put there to prevent the unit from blowing up.

Which in turn means that until now, no one has ever been able to operate an Exo-Knight at their hundred percent potential.

So if what they said about the new generation of Exo-Knights were true, we might really be seeing something that would change the Exo-Knight scene completely.

I guess with that knowledge in mind, it made sense why he wasn’t teaching us specifically how to make the best out of the ninth generation of Exo-Knights but rather, simply making sure that we would be able to master the basics to use whatever became of the new generation of Exo-Knights when it was released.

With that small history class over, he moved on to give us a general idea of what an Exo-Knight was capable of doing by listing out the general designs and models of some of the notable Exo-Knights throughout the generations.

Despite them supposedly being a versatile unit, it became inevitable that people would want to use them for specific purposes and started creating designs that would specifically tailor those machines to excel at that one purpose.

We’re talking about excavator type Exo-Knights that were used in place of miners on planets with inhospitable climate and lifeforms, deep space research units that could be sent into dangerous parts of space where they could withstand ion storms and still work delicate machinery with their hands, or even just an extremely big mobile artillery platform in the military that they can use to bombard positions both from space and on the planet’s surface.

Seems like humanity really really like the giant robots and there were multiple companies that ended up specialising in making nothing but Exo-Knights.

I mean... I can understand why since it looks like humanity’s preference for wanting giant robots didn’t change even in another universe, so of course in this universe where we could actually make them, we went crazy with them.

All of that was basically crammed into us during that one day of lessons and he basically told us that it didn’t really matter if we remembered any of that at the end as long as we had the instincts and talent to handle the machine itself. The knowledge about how the Exo-Knights worked was basically a way for the intellectuals to get a head start on everyone else.

Not really sure what that meant but I did listen to everything seriously since all of this was interesting to me anyway.

On the second day however, we were guided to another hall that contained exactly twenty VR Capsules which we were told we would be spending the entire day in.

When the capsule opened, I was expecting to see a cockpit already inside but I was presented with just a blank space.

Everyone else was in the same situation and we all turned to look back at the instructor questioningly.

”As I said, we have no idea of how the new Exo-Knights would function and I am not here to limit you to that possibility. All of these VR Capsules are equipped with hardlight projections that can be used to design your own cockpit which you feel the most comfortable using. Today I will have all of you design your own cockpit and test out the controls in the simulation,” He explained.

I felt a little confused by his teaching methods.

First, the test he put us through was dumping us in a cockpit with alien controls and expecting us to figure out how to use them regardless of what we felt about the controls.

Now he wants us to completely design a cockpit of our own?

Wait... If I think about it... I know what I needed and what I lacked while piloting the Exo-Knight in that simulation.

The movements were adequate but not as refined as I would like. For example, to crouch the Exo-Knight down, you needed to activate a specific button to do that which was something that I never manage to figure out if there was a way to make the Exo-Knight go prone.

And there was the thing with the nightvision mode as well...

Even though I managed to figure out the button for the flashlight, I never found the button that would activate the nightvision mode for the Exo-Knight.

Additionally, there was also the button that would activate the jet boost which would give the Exo-Knight a burst of speed when activated but if I wanted to do that, I would have to lift my finger off the trigger and stop firing my gun for a moment which might give the enemy I’m facing the split second they needed to take me out.

And even the movement of the Exo-Knight could be improved since you would need to move your legs to make the Exo-Knight move and it would get tiring after a while.

Huh... Maybe this instructor actually knows what he’s doing? Or maybe this is just a fluke?

Well, either way, I welcome this so I climbed inside and the VR Capsule and let the door close, prompting the machine to start itself up.

Several windows then appeared around me, all of them apparently to customise the cockpit however I like.

I took a look at the screens to figure out what I’m able to change and what I’m able to move around.

Oh wow, I can even change the type of control that I could use to control the arms. Instead of the joystick type, I can use something like a glove instead which would give me more control over the arms of the Exo-Knight.

I was just about to choose that over the joystick when I scrolled down further to see what other types there were until I found a control that was literally an orb.

That caught my attention as I looked at the description of that orb.

Apparently I can control it using my brainwaves instead? Why the heck won’t anyone pick this then?

Hmm... If I had to guess, maybe if you were using your brainwaves to control the Exo-Knight, you would have to dedicate all your concentration to controlling it. And if you were distracted, your entire Exo-Knight will shut down?

Still... I think it would be a superior way to control the Exo-Knight instead of the other controls that were offered on the screen.

Oh wait... Would this make my Psionic problem get worse?

Renata’s voice came from my chest, ”Don’t worry, Daddy! I can help you regulate it!”

Oh, if Renata says so...

I started picking out all the controls to create my own cockpit which would allow me to control the Exo-Knight through my thoughts.

The result was basically a floating chair that had an orb on each of the armrests and some kind of ring that would fit around my head.

Taking a seat on the chair, I set the ring on my head and placed my hands on top of the orbs.

The space around lit up and I found myself in what I guess must be the cockpit of an Exo-Knight.

Ok, let me try to--

CRASH!!

Ah... The Exo-Knight seemed to have fallen over onto the ground.

Guess I was right about needing to concentrate on the thoughts at all times while controlling the Exo-Knight... Otherwise, the entire Exo-Knight will just shut down or something.

Let me think about trying to push the Exo-Knight up...

The Exo-Knight pushed itself up for a moment before it suddenly let go and the entire machine fell onto the ground again.

Damn... Ok, this is harder than I thought...

I guess this was why the instructor gave us an entire day to test this out.

I’m going to need to get used to this...
