What Do You Mean I'm The Captain Of A Yandere Mercenary Company?

I didn’t get to ask her that because she went ahead to type a new entry into the search bar.

’Progress Report’.

A whole new list of entries popped up on the screen. She really knows what keywords to use to get the results huh?

”Let’s see what they are really doing here…” Amber muttered through our comms, selecting a random entry from the list.

The same researcher popped up on the screen again.

”Progress report number three seven five. We’ve administered the newest batch of test subjects with the Awakeners and we will be initiating trials soon. There were some issues with the initial orientation but I believe this group would have less problems than the previous batch since they were taken from the frontier.”

I turned to Amber, ”Is he saying what I think he is?”

She nodded.

So they were basically kidnapping children to perform experiments on them…

Amber ended that video and moved up a few logs to play the recording.

”Progress report number three seven nine. Half of the subjects have shown signs of Psionic Degradation so we have chosen to remove them from the trial group and assign them to the material group. The remaining subjects have been quite compliant so far so I’m quite optimistic about the results.”

Amber didn’t wait to hear the rest and ended the recording to bring up another one.

”Progress report number three eight eight. Unfortunately, subject number one eight nine seven turned out to be defective as well and had to be terminated. That was the last of our current batch of subjects. We are now awaiting the next batch of subjects to be brought in. This time--”

She cut off that one as well and moved all the way to the top where the most recent logs were.

She counted ten records down before selecting it to play.

”Progress report number one zero eight seven. The use of the crystals have shown to elevate their brain activity and successfully prevented further Psionic Degradation. We shall be injecting the subjects with the crushed crystals to see--”

”Injecting?!!” Amber cried out, her sudden outburst surprising me.

”Is that bad?” I asked.

”That’s suicidal!”

She immediately ended that recording and went to the next one.

”Progress report number one zero eight eight. Bad day, it seems… About ninety five percent of the subjects have expired shortly after being administered the injection. The remainder are having convulsions and are expected to expire soon as well. It seems like this might be another failure…”

This time Mara floated up beside her and I could see that even she was pissed.

”Next one, Amber,” She instructed.

Amber didn’t question her and tapped on the next entry on the list.

”Progress report number one zero eight nine. The remaining few subjects are slipping in and out of consciousness so in a last ditch effort, we have decided to place them into stasis chambers to see if we can stop their bodies from shutting down. We--”

”Next,” Mara instructed.

Amber shut off the video and did as she asked.

”Progress report number one zero nine zero. Subjects seem to have stabilised--”

Mara didn’t say anything and simply took over the controls and directly moved to the next recording. Not only that, she also skipped forward several seconds to avoid the introduction.

”... still stable. We are planning to take this chance to try and inject more of the liquid crystal into the subjects--”

She paused the video there and I think I saw a few things around the room move suddenly.

At first I thought it was the drones or Psionic Chrysalis hiding in the shadows but I realised those things were simply moving because of Mara’s telekinesis going a little out of control.

She then wordlessly started the next video.

”... going well. We are now attempting to link the crystals directly to the test subjects through the connection chambers. Since the subjects are already suspended in the stasis chambers, it would just be a simple matter of connecting the two capsules together and allowing them to--”

”Progress report one zero nine three. There have been some reports of weird Psionic fluctuations around the station but I believe that this is just an indication that the subjects are awakening their Psionic potential. Our decision is to continue--”

”Progress report one zero nine four. There has been more progress as our scans are showing increased Psionic activity around the station and--”

”Progress repor-- which we don’t know where it came from. But for a Psionic Chrysalis to show up inside the station like that made the entire station go on lock down as we believe there might be a breach in the--”

”Progress report one zero nine six. It seems like there’s more of them but the subjects are also showing signs that they were on the verge of a breakthrough in the Psionic levels. This could even rival talented nobles in their ability to--”

Mara closed it and tapped on the final log.

”This… This shall be my last log… If you find this, know that our last experiment was a disaster as the subjects were able to create portals that allowed Psionic Chrysalis to go through them. We’re not sure if they were just being used as a conduit for the Psionic Chrysalis or they were doing it consciously. Either way, this station is lost… I will have to evacuate the station alongside everyone else but this place is officially classified as lost. If you are able to, save all the research here and blow the station up, that is the only way to be sure.”

Amber let out a groan as Mara stopped the video, ”Why… Why do they need to keep coming up with the most stupid way to screw things up?! As if things weren’t as screwed up enough as it is anymore!”

I turned to her, ”Ok… So… I have quite a number of questions I want to ask right now but… I’m guessing we have more pressing matters to deal with right now? Specifically the fact that there’s someone on this station that can endlessly deploy reinforcements to protect themselves?”

Amber nodded, ”Let’s deal with that first. Then after that, I will answer any question you have, Tera.”

I raised an eyebrow at her, ”I thought you had the restriction on you that made you unable to explain to me about this topic?”

Amber smirked at me, ”There is a small loophole in that restriction you see. While it made me unable to share any information with someone who is unaware about it as I would lose my memories of said topic if I were to try, they would not stop me from sharing it with someone who already knows some details about it. I’ll tell you everything after we have dealt with this, it’s a really long story.”

Hmm… Fair enough I suppose. At least this time I will be getting answers instead of more questions.

”Alright then. I suppose we just need to find the research labs that contain that kid and then set him free right?”

Ries then raised her hand slightly, ”Boss? I think there’s more than one though… The recording said that there’s multiple of them and not just one…”

Oh… That’s right… That guy kept saying there’s ’subjects’ instead of just ’subject’ didn’t he?

I hesitated, ”But in the security room, we only saw one such person being kept in that capsule, right? Are the others kept elsewhere or something?”

Lea answered instead, ”Mistress, there were several monitors that were offline so I believe that the cameras in those rooms had been destroyed. It is possible that those cameras would have shown those other children if they were still online.”

”Damn… That means we don’t know the exact number of people we need to save, right?”

”Why not just go through all the research labs? We’re going to need to search them to find them anyway since we don’t have a name list and location of where they were at, right?” Amber suggested.

I turned back to the console and typed in a new entry in the search bar.

’Subject manifest’

New results showed up on the screen where they were even sorted according to date with the newest entry at the top.

Tapping on it, the window expanded to show a list of pictures of children with numbers attached to them as well as their current status and which research lab they were assigned to be experimented on.

Sorting the list by the status so that we could just filter out the ’deceased’ ones, we were left with a total of seven of them that still had the ’active’ status.

I then looked at the column that had the list of which research lab they were assigned to and took a picture of it with my Codex.

With that information in hand, I turned to the girls and nodded, ”Alright, now I’m ready.”

Let’s go save some kids now~
