THE SYSTEM IS NOT MINE

The village did not erupt. It tightened.

The first three days after Shui’s burial passed in a fevered blur. Yan remembered fragments. The weight of a damp cloth on his forehead, Taner’s quiet breathing near the doorway, the smell of boiled herbs thick in the air. And beneath it all:

Primary Host: Terminated

Binding Integrity: 100%

Compatibility: 0.001%

He tried not to look at it. When he closed his eyes, it remained and when he opened them, it adjusted.

On the second night, he whispered, ”Stop.”

The letters vanished. His breath stuttered.

Fever, he told himself. Grief.

But a careless thought summoned it again. The white text reassembled with clinical obedience. He lay awake until dawn, wondering whether he had gone mad, or whether something had followed him home from the field and how he could understand the foreign letters of white text.

By the fifth day, the fever broke and the world changed.

When Yan stepped into the street, conversation shifted half a beat too late. A woman paused mid-sentence. Her hand tightened around her son’s shoulder.

”Come Inside.”

The boy hesitated. ”I said inside.”

Doors did not slam, they closed. Two houses down, children spun reed hoops in the dust. One stopped when he saw Yan. The other stared openly until their mother emerged and pulled them back without a word.

The space around him felt curated. As if the road had decided how much of him it would permit.

Near the well, old man Mo sat mending rope. He did not look up at first. Then he did.

”So this is the boy,” he muttered. The rope slipped from his fingers. ”The bastard that killed Shui.”

The word did not rise. It settled. No one opposed his words. No one agreed. The well rope creaked softly in the wind.

Yan heard the word and paused for a second before walking forward.

The white letters returned when he least wanted them.

He stopped mid-step as the text changed.

Threat: Spiritual Level 2 Beast

Time to Impact: 01:15:22

Projected Casualty Rate: 70%

”This is a fever,” he whispered.

The timer did not change. He dismissed it. Summoned it again. Dismissed it. Summoned it again. The countdown continued. Each time it appeared, something tightened beneath his ribs, as if the village were a fist slowly closing.

He wanted to prove it wrong and thought If he went to Jiyan Field and found nothing, then the white letters were only madness.

Time to Impact: 00:58:41

He climbed the lookout hill at dusk. South Reed lay below in tired geometry. To the south and west, the Black Reeds stretched like drowned fingers. To the east, the foothills cut jagged against the fading sky. Only the northern trade road offered a clean escape.

The wind shifted.. Grass in Jiyan Field bent not with wind, but with pacing.

A gray shaped beast moved in the grass. It was longer than a common wolf with shoulders rolling low. Two Tooth too heavy for its skull, extending in curve shape till its eye.

And it was waiting.

Threat: Shadow Prowler

Interception Probability: High

The white letters were not madness. They were predictions.

Time to impact: 00:45:12

Yan took a deep breath, ”this can’t be”

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Then he ran to the clinic.

His father lay on the narrow cot beneath the smoke-dark beams. His skin had thinned in five days. His breath carried weight.

”Father. There is a beast in Jiyan Field. We have to leave. I’ll carry you. We’ll take Tan’er and reach the north road.”

His father studied him carefully. ”The elders came,” he said quietly.

Yan stilled.

”They are afraid.” Not accusation. Not defense. ”They say something changed when Shui died.”

”There is a beast, we have to go .hurry” Yan approached the father and held his hand.

But the father did not budge.

His father pulled his hand back . ”Go alone.” Not dismissal. Protection. ”If you’re right, you can’t outrun it by carrying me.”

”But father...” Yan questioned.

”Go..”

Yan waited for a few moments staring at his father and then he left.

When Yan just walked out, he met Gu Taner.

”Taner, come with me, there is a beast, we have to run.”

Yan grabbed her hand to run.

She pulled back, and looked at Yan.

Taner’s voice trembled. ”Gege...”

He turned. Her eyes were red.

”I will not come with you, you killed Shui. Go away,” Taner shouted.

”Listen Taner, it’s not me, I did not kill him. And that’s not an important thing right now.”

”There is a beast, it is coming to eat us. Let’s go.”

Yan sat down as he explained.

Taner shouted, ”I saw it, you pushed him, go away you liar.”

The white text pulsed.

00:45:12

Yan hesitated for a moment, he wanted to carry her on his shoulder and run, but decided not to.

He turned and ran alone.

Time to impact: 00:31:08

He sprinted toward the northern trade road. If he could break the arc before it closed, he could draw it away from the houses. His boots struck packed dirt. The world lagged.

A jagged white box snapped onto the high grass ahead.

Warning: Interception Imminent

Threat: Shadow Prowler (Pacing Northern Perimeter)

Outcome Projection: Negligible

The grass bent unnaturally. It wasn’t charging. It was pacing. Herding.

He pivoted toward the marshes.

Tactical Disadvantage

Survival Probability: Minimal

The beast seemed to be locked into him and it was driving him back. Back toward the irrigation trench.

If he could not outrun it, he would choose the ground.

Time to impact: 00:08:19

He doubled back to the clinic.

The doctor’s tools lay in ordered rows. Bone saws, suturing needles, and the narrow blade used when cattle veins swelled with summer rot. Yan took the jar of black hemlock extract. It was dark and looked vicious. He uncorked it briefly. The smell was bitter.

He remembered back then the doctor used it poison rats.

He dragged the blade slowly through the extract until the edge shone wet in lantern light. Then he corked the jar and slipped both into his sleeve.

He ran to the irrigation trench, the ditch where Shui had fallen. The soil there was already unstable. Already treacherous. He buried a sharpened iron plow blade beneath loose mud, angling it upward where the ditch narrowed. He struck flint. The wind carried smoke west to east. Stripping camouflage, forcing movement.

00:00:07

00:00:03

00:00:01

The ground gave way. Not all at once. First a soft collapse, then a sharp break as weight is committed. Mud sheared downward. The hidden plow blade struck something with a dull, buried crack.

The beast dropped. It twisted mid-fall, instinct bending its body, but the trench was too narrow. Its shoulder slammed into the packed edge. For a fraction of a second, its balance broke.

That was enough.

Jaws closed on Yan’s forearm. Bone shuddered. Pain detonated, his arm vibrated and vision flickered.

He did not pull back. He stepped in.

His arm drove deeper between its teeth, forcing past the bite, forcing space where there should have been none. The beast jerked, trying to tear sideways, but the angle was wrong. Its weight was trapped. Its footing was uncertain.

Yan moved with it. His free hand came up. The blade went in. Once, upward, under the jaw. The edge met resistance. Slid. Then sank.

The beast convulsed. Its body surged, muscles coiling in violent refusal. Mud tore beneath them. The buried iron shifted, grinding against bone. Yan’s grip did not loosen.

Again. This time the blade struck deeper. Something warm spilled over his hand.

The beast thrashed harder, then faltered. The poison had entered.

Its jaws tightened reflexively, then loosened. Just enough.

Yan drove forward. Again. Again. Each strike was slower than the last, but more certain.

The beast’s movements lost cohesion. Strength bled into erratic spasms. Its body sagged against the trench wall, weight no longer controlled, only falling.

Yan did not stop until it did.

Silence came unevenly. Not sudden, but collapsing in on itself.

The weight in front of him became still. Only then did his hand fall. Only then did he breathe.

Lanterns appeared first as trembling stars between the rows. Then as faces. Villagers rushed toward the smoke and stopped in a loose ring around the trench. Ten paces. No closer.

”Shadow Prowler,” someone breathed. Recognition. Fear.

”I know it must be you, the killer of my son. You brought the beast.”

”You killed my son, now you want to kill us all.”

Shui’s father shouted, his veins bulged, but the village chief signaled to not act rashly.

”I killed it,” Yan rasped.

”Or maybe it followed you,” someone murmured.

He turned. His mother stood near the back. Her hands were clasped tightly in her sleeves. For a moment, he thought she would step forward. Break the distance.

She did not. Taner stood beside her. Watching. Not moving.

The circle widened. Not in anger. In avoidance.

Yan looked at his hands. For a brief, unreasonable moment, he wondered if they were right. If something had followed him home that afternoon. If something had settled inside him when Shui fell.

His knees gave way. He fell into the churned soil.

The lantern light burned bright around him. No one crossed it.

White text surfaced.

Mission Complete

Reward Available: Beast Heart Refinement Method

The words were precise. Unaffected. The system did not care who stood inside the circle. It only recorded outcomes.

Yan closed his eyes. The lantern light pressed through his lids. Warm. Human.

But it felt colder than the dark.
