The Legendary Method Actor

The roaring applause for the Starr Family slowly faded into the cool night air of Solhaven Academy. As the musical prodigies took their final bows and retreated into the staging tunnels, the massive, floating arcane spotlights shifted their focus.

The stadium was now draped in the darkness of night, but the arena floor was illuminated by brilliant, crisscrossing beams of white and gold magical light. One of the primary beams snapped onto Bruce Doyle, who stood on his floating platform, adjusting his crystal-tipped collar.

”What an incredible performance by the Starr Family!”

Bruce’s magically amplified voice boomed, bringing the crowd’s energy seamlessly back to a fever pitch.

”But ladies and gentlemen, the intermission is over! The sun has set on the demi-plane, but the fires of competition are burning hotter than ever! It is time for the climax of the The Dueling Event Finals!”

The crowd erupted into a deafening roar, shaking the stadium benches.

”We start with the First Level Groups! Our combatants have had time to rest and receive standard healing.”

Bruce continued, his voice echoing off the high magical barriers protecting the stands.

“But make no mistake, some of these students are still carrying the bruises, the burns, and the exhaustion of the earlier rounds in the morning. Such is the brutal reality of life! We are down to our final four! And for our first semi-final match, please welcome to the sands...”

The heavy iron gates on the eastern side of the arena ground open.

”From the College of Valor, the immovable anchor... Rank-1 Bronze Aegis, Kima Ramsey!”

Kima stepped out into the harsh glare of the arcane spotlights. He was clad in heavy, dented full plate armor, carrying a massive iron tower shield and a heavy flanged mace. But as he walked to the center of the arena, his posture was unusually stiff. There are only a few times in his life that Kima was walking onto a battlefield without his brother, Kogar, by his side. He was the ‘Guardian’ of their duo, to hold the line and absorb punishment while his brother dealt the lethal blows. In a one-on-one duel, his greatest weakness was utterly exposed. He lacked offensive output.

”And his opponent! From the College of Arcanum, the prodigy of House Garrick... 1st-Circle Novice, Viktor Garrick!”

Bruce shouted as the western gates opened.

Viktor walked onto the sands wearing pristine, tailored robes of deep blue and silver. He held his white ash staff loosely in his right hand. His face was a mask of cold, analytical detachment. He walked to his designated starting mark and stared at Kima with the calm and calculative eyes of a mage.

The magical bell tolled.

Kima knew he couldn’t play defensively. If he stood still, Viktor’s heavy artillery magic would eventually blast through his tower shield. He had to close the distance.

With a guttural roar, Kima charged. He hoisted his massive tower shield, the heavy iron boots of his plate armor churning up the sand. He channeled his mana.

“Scutum.”

Kima cast the 1st-Circle spell: Shield.

A shimmering, hard-light barrier flared to life across the face of his iron shield, turning him into a rushing bunker.

He closed the distance in seconds, swinging his heavy flanged mace in a brutal, horizontal arc meant to crush Viktor’s ribs.

Viktor didn’t blink.

If it was before, Viktor would have planted his feet, panicked at the sight of a Vanguard in his face, but he had already abandoned the ‘static turret’ philosophy.

As the mace descended, Viktor’s footwork shifted flawlessly. He executed a precise, battle-tested pivot, stepping completely offline and slipping directly into Kima’s offensive blind spot. The heavy mace cleaved through empty air, the sheer momentum pulling Kima off-balance.

Viktor raised his left hand, his fingers glowing with condensed mana.

He didn’t cast his lethal, point-blank Concussive Blast spell. That would end the fight instantly. Instead…

“Ictus!”

Viktor cast the cantrip spell: Kinetic Bolt.

Three rapid projectiles of blunt force slammed into the side of Kima’s helmet.

CLANG-CLANG-CLANG.

The impact didn’t pierce the steel, but the concussive force rattled Kima’s skull, causing him to stumble wildly to his right. Kima grunted, shaking his head to clear the ringing, and turned, raising his shield to block the inevitable follow-up barrage of artillery magic.

But Viktor wasn’t standing at a distance. He had moved again, staying perfectly within the dangerous, close-quarters pocket.

”Too slow.”

Viktor murmured coldly.

Kima roared in frustration and launched a vicious, overhead strike. Viktor simply sidestepped the crushing blow by inches. As Kima recovered, Viktor snapped his fingers.

“Frigus.”

Viktor cast another cantrip spell: Frost Flare.

A localized burst of freezing fog erupted directly inside Kima’s visor.

Kima yelled, blinded by the sudden frost clinging to his eyelashes and the icy sting in his eyes. He swung his mace wildly, blindly trying to create space.

Viktor effortlessly ducked under the wild swing and slammed the heavy, iron-shod base of his white ash staff directly into the back of Kima’s armored knee.

The joint buckled. Kima dropped to one knee in the sand, gasping for breath.

”A... a stunning display of close-quarters evasion from Garrick. He’s completely dismantled Ramsey’s charge. But... Garrick isn’t finishing it. He has a clear shot at Ramsey’s exposed flank, but he’s backing off.”

Bruce said, his voice losing some of its trademark hype.

Down in the arena, Viktor casually stepped back, giving Kima the space to stand back up.

It wasn’t mercy. It was an experiment. Viktor was using a live, fully armored Vanguard as a practice dummy. He was actively testing his new evasion footwork against real, heavy-weapon trajectories, calculating the exact timing required to slip a lethal strike without relying on magical shields.

Kima forced himself up, his breathing ragged. Blood was trickling from his nose beneath his dented visor from the sheer concussive rattle of the kinetic bolts. He was an Aegis, trained in the College of Valor to never back down. He gripped his mace with both hands and charged again.

For the next ten minutes, the arena descended into a systematic, chilling display of one-sided violence.

Kima swung, battered, and pushed with everything he had. And every single time, Viktor calculated the trajectory, slipped the strike with terrifying, cold efficiency, and countered with a precise, counter blow.

Viktor fired localized Kinetic Bolts into Kima’s joints. He used rapid strikes from his staff to batter Kima’s armored ribs. He tripped him, blinded him, and bruised him. He was picking his enemy apart piece by piece, analyzing his own defensive footwork with the sociopathic detachment of a scholar reading a book.

Kima’s heavy plate armor was covered in dents and frost. His movements grew sluggish, his arms shaking under the weight of his tower shield. He was bleeding from a cut above his eye, his blood staining the sand.

The roaring crowd slowly fell silent.

The excitement of the duel had evaporated, replaced by a deep, uncomfortable tension. This was no longer a competition of skill. It looked like torture. The students in the stands began to murmur, exchanging uneasy glances. Even the hardened veterans watching from the spectator box frowned at the display.

Bruce Doyle leaned over his console, pressing two fingers against his earpiece to open a private, encrypted channel to the VIP judges’ box.

”Master Alvon, Headmaster Andrade, this is getting out of hand. Garrick is deliberately prolonging this. Ramsey is barely standing. Do I have authorization to call the match for medical intervention?”

Bruce whispered urgently, keeping his microphone muted to the stadium. High in the VIP box, Master Alvon leaned over the glass, his face set in a grim, immovable scowl.

”No, Ramsey has not yielded. He is an Aegis of the College of Valor. Real combat does not offer mercy rules when you are outmatched. If he wants it to end, he must drop his weapon and surrender.”

Alvon’s voice crackled back through Bruce’s earpiece.

Bruce cursed under his breath, turning his microphone back on.

”Ramsey is showing incredible grit, ladies and gentlemen, refusing to back down against an overwhelming assault!”

Down in the arena, Kima was swaying on his feet. The world was swimming in his vision. His lungs burned, and his right arm felt completely numb. He looked at Viktor, who was standing ten feet away, perfectly pristine, his breathing completely even.

I can’t beat him,but I won’t kneel to him.

Kima’s hazy mind realized.

With a primal, agonizing scream, Kima launched himself forward for one final, desperate charge.

Mid-stride, his exhausted body simply gave out.

Kima’s eyes rolled back into his skull. He lost consciousness before he even reached Viktor. Yet, the grueling, repetitive discipline of his training took over. His body continued to move purely on muscle memory and instinct, his legs driving him forward, his arm raising the flanged mace for a strike even as his brain shut down.

Viktor watched the lifeless, unblinking eyes through the visor. He recognized the biological shutdown instantly.

”Interesting…Motor function persisting despite cognitive failure.”

Viktor murmured to himself.

The experiment was over. The dummy was broken.

Viktor didn’t evade this time. He raised his left hand, aiming his palm directly at the center of the unconscious Kima’s breastplate. The mana in the air screamed as Viktor condensed a massive shockwave and enough concussive force to shatter Kima’s ribs and violently launch him across the arena.

He was going to finish it.

”KIMA!”

A terrifying roar shattered the tense silence of the arena.

Before Viktor could release the spell, a massive shadow blotted out the arcane spotlights.

Kogar Ramsey, the explosive ”Storm” to Kima’s ”Guardian,” had vaulted the barrier. He crashed down onto the arena sands with earth-shattering force, sending up a geyser of dust.

Kogar didn’t hesitate. He threw his battleaxe directly between Viktor and his brother. The heavy axe buried itself deep into the sand, standing upright like an iron wall.

Kogar dove, wrapping his arms around his unconscious brother and pulling him into the dirt just as Kima’s legs finally gave out. He covered Kima’s battered body with his own, glaring up at Viktor with eyes full of pure, homicidal rage.

The entire stadium gasped.

The presiding judge instantly blew a heavy brass whistle, crossing his arms over his chest.

”MATCH HALTED! Illegal intervention by a non-combatant! Kima Ramsey is disqualified! The victor of the semi-final is Viktor Garrick!”
