The Legendary Method Actor

The stadium was still physically vibrating from Clive Belcoot’s unbelievable stunt.

Down on the sands, the twenty-foot Academy Siege Golem remained perfectly still, kneeling in absolute submission before the exhausted, bleeding 2nd-Circle Sigil. The crowd was on its feet, roaring in a sustained crescendo of sheer disbelief.

Clive collapsed onto his back, his chest heaving as he stared up at the sky past the massive, dormant colossus. He let the deafening chants of his name wash over him, taking a long, hard-earned moment to simply breathe and soak in the absolute adoration of the Grand Arena.

”I have commentated for many years, and I have never seen a live combat override of that magnitude!”

Bruce Doyle screamed into his amplification crystal, his voice cracking with pure hype.

”But a spectacle is only half the battle! We must look to the Master Artificers for the official scoring!”

A group of high-ranking academy judges hurried onto the sands, their robes flapping in the wind. They meticulously inspected Rolf Torvald’s Quarantine array first, verifying its structural integrity. Then, they cautiously approached Clive’s platform. The Head Artificer traced the glowing, erratic lines of Clive’s hacking matrix, his eyes widening in sheer professional awe at the geometric perfection carved under such immense pressure. He looked up to the announcer’s podium and gave a sharp, definitive nod, magically transmitting the final tallies.

Bruce caught the glowing parchment as it materialized on his desk. He threw his arms wide.

”The judges have verified the matrices!”

Bruce roared.

”For a flawless, hazard-free Quarantine, Rolf Torvald secures a magnificent second place! But for achieving the impossible, for turning a weapon of war into a loyal servant under heavy fire, scoring a perfect one hundred points... A breathtaking display of intellect under fire! Clive Belcoot is your undisputed Grand Champion of the Runic Engineering Gauntlet!”

As Clive was finally escorted off the sands by a team of cheering academy proctors, still waving to the delirious crowd, the heavy iron gates ground open once more.

Teams of academy proctors flooded the arena. Moving with rapid, military efficiency, they didn’t just clear away the shattered obsidian platforms and the deactivated siege golems; they completely flattened the sand. With a few synchronized pulses of earth magic, they smoothed the entire arena floor into a blank, featureless expanse.

Then, they retreated into the tunnels, pulling the heavy gates shut behind them.

The crowd’s cheers slowly dissolved into a murmur of confused anticipation. The Grand Arena was completely empty. There were no cages being wheeled out. There were no obstacle courses being constructed.

High above, Bruce Doyle’s floating platform drifted to the exact center of the stadium. He raised his arms, a massive, theatrical grin spreading across his face.

”Are you looking for the cages, folks?!”

Bruce bellowed, playing the crowd perfectly.

”Are you waiting for the obstacle course?! Well, you can stop looking! Because for our next Grand Finale, the Grand Arena is simply too small!”

With a dramatic, sweeping wave of his hand, Bruce triggered the floating panels in the grand arena. .

High above the empty sands, four massive, high-fidelity Scrying Panes flared to life. They weren’t displaying the arena; they were broadcasting live, crystal-clear feeds from the Academy’s Menagerie, a massive, magically contained biodome located on the far edge of the campus.

The screens showed a dense, ancient forest. Thick, creeping fog rolled over treacherous, moss-covered ravines and towering, jagged timber. It looked cold, damp, and entirely hostile.

”We are taking you to the untamed wild!”

Bruce announced.

”Welcome to the Grand Finals of the Beast Taming Event: The Alpha’s Domain!”

The crowd roared, thrilled by the sudden shift in venue.

”Now, listen closely, because the rules of the wild are different!”

Bruce explained, pacing his platform.

”A beast cannot be rushed. You cannot forge a bond in an hour! For the last five days, our four advancing finalists have not slept in their comfortable dormitories. They have lived, slept, and eaten inside isolated holding pens alongside their Dire Wolf partners! They have had five grueling days to establish dominance, build trust, or forge a working dynamic that will keep them alive!”

Up in the participants box, Ray’s eyes locked onto the massive screens. His interest rose as he had spent some time in the Academy’s Menagerie for his Arcane Zoology and Binding class.

”Before we begin the hunt, let’s take a look at how our four finalists spent their five days prior to the Final Round of the Main Qualifiers!”

Bruce’s voice echoed across the stadium,

The Scrying Panes shifted, displaying a rapid, magically edited highlight reel from the holding pens. Bruce narrated the montage with his practiced, theatrical flair.

”We have a strong showing from the minor College of Rangers!”

Bruce announced as the screens flashed short clips of two young men running standard taming drills.

”Dario Balsam, a Rank-3 Vanguard, and Adlai Eusmil, a Rank-2 Pathfinder! Both took a highly practical, disciplined approach, establishing firm boundaries with their assets.”

The clips transitioned, and the massive screens split down the middle.

”But two very distinct, radically opposing philosophies have emerged from our remaining competitors!”

Bruce hyped.

”Watch closely!”

On the left screen was Bernadette Warg, the petite 3rd-Circle Ironwood from the minor College of Druidic Arts. The highlights showed her doubling down on fear. Over the last five days, she had continuously flared her magical, spectral Bear Aura. She had deliberately withheld food from her wolf, essentially starving and bullying the massive predator into a state of absolute, terrified submission.

”Bernadette Warg believes in absolute dominance!”

Bruce commentated as the crowd watched the footage.

”Look at that magical suppression! She has forged a weapon out of pure stress!”

Ray analyzed the footage. The beast obeyed her commands, but its body language was a disaster, tail permanently tucked, eyes darting erratically, cortisol levels visibly spiking to dangerous heights.

On the right screen was Logan Savina, the Rank-2 Pathfinder from the minor College of Rangers who had taken first place in the second round. He had taken the exact opposite path. The footage showed Logan stripping off his ranger armor and sitting cross-legged in the dirt of the pen. Logan shared his own dried rations with the wolf. He spent hours painstakingly grooming the beast’s shimmering, steel-wire fur, constantly humming his low, resonant Soother Melody.

”And then we have Logan Savina!”

Bruce marveled.

”He hasn’t demanded respect; he has offered partnership. He hasn’t broken a beast; he has initiated a pack-mate!”

”The Final Round of the Beast Taming event is simple!”

Bruce’s voice snapped the crowd back to the present as the highlight reel faded and the live feeds from the Menagerie returned.

”Our four tamers have just been dropped at separate insertion points on the outer edge of the artificial forest. They must navigate the hostile terrain and obstacles they might encounter! Their objective? Reach the sunken crater at the center of the woods and retrieve an Academy Crest. But be warned... the crests are guarded by an ultimate obstacle.Let the hunt... BEGIN!”

On the Scrying Panes, the action exploded instantly.

On Screen One, Bernadette marched through the dense timber, her Dire Wolf slinking nervously a few paces behind her. She hit her first obstacle: a narrow, rocky ravine blocked by a massive, unbonded Sentinel wolf.

The Sentinel bared its fangs, letting out a territorial roar.

Lacking any tactical finesse, Bernadette didn’t try to sneak past. She aggressively flared her False Alpha aura, her eyes glowing green as the spectral bear manifested behind her. She pointed a trembling finger at the Sentinel and screamed a command, violently forcing her own partner-wolf forward.

Her wolf whimpered, but the fear of its master overrode its reluctance. It charged the Wolf Sentinel.

It wasn’t a clean fight. It was a messy, frantic, bloody brawl. Her wolf fought out of sheer panic, taking unnecessary bites to its shoulders and flanks as it wrestled the Sentinel into the mud. Bernadette didn’t help; she simply used the brutal distraction to sprint past the snarling beasts, treating her partner like a disposable meat shield.

”A brutal engagement in the eastern ravine!”

Bruce winced.

”Bernadette slips past, but her beast is taking heavy damage!”

On Screen Two, Ray watched Logan Savina encounter his own Sentinel blocking a fallen ancient tree.

Logan didn’t flare an aura, and he certainly didn’t order his wolf into a meat-grinder. He dropped into a low crouch, locking eyes with his partner. He gave a sharp, complex hand signal, followed by two rhythmic clicks of his tongue.

The Dire Wolf immediately vanished silently into the thick underbrush to the right.

Logan then stood up, pulled a piece of dried meat from his pouch, and threw it directly at the Wolf Sentinel.

”Hey! Ugly!”

Logan shouted, waving his arms to make himself the primary target.

The Wolf Sentinel snarled, its eyes locking entirely onto the loud, exposed human. It bunched its massive muscles to leap.

It never made it off the ground.

Logan’s dire wolf exploded from the brush directly on the Wolf Sentinel’s blind flank. It didn’t bite to kill; it hit the Sentinel with the sheer kinetic force of a battering ram, knocking the wild beast off balance. In a flash of steel-fur, Logan’s dire wolf pinned the Wolf Sentinel to the earth in a flawless, non-lethal throat-hold, neutralizing the threat in exactly three seconds.

Logan casually jogged past the pinned Sentinel, patted his wolf on the flank, and clicked his tongue once. His dire wolf immediately released the hold and bounded happily after him, leaving the dazed Wolf Sentinel in the dirt.

Within Ray’s mind, his archetypes flared to life.

Commander: ”Textbook pincer movement. He didn’t order a frontal assault; he utilized a localized flanking maneuver. He has established absolute, undeniable unit cohesion.”

Naturalist: ”Crikey, look at that! A flawless pack hunt! He isn’t the master, he’s the bloody alpha! He acted as the bait because he trusts that beautiful creature to cover his blind spot! Absolute perfection!”

The stadium erupted into cheers at the display of flawless coordination. Over the next twenty minutes, the other two finalists, Dario and Adlai were eliminated. Dario got hopelessly lost in the magical fog, while Adlai was forced to trigger his emergency flare when his stressed dire wolf refused to engage a Wolf Sentinel.

It was down to two.
