The Legendary Method Actor

Rina’s panic began to spiral.

”Young master… am I dying?!

Her terror cut through his internal debate. Ray activated the World Weary Healer’s ‘Calming Presence’ skill, it instantly washed over the room in a wave of profound, supernatural peace.

”Rina. Look at me,”

Ray said, his voice the epitome of calm authority.

”Breathe. You are not in danger. You are safe. I am here. Just breathe.”

As his calming aura washed over Rina, her panic slowly subsided, though her eyes remained wide with terrified confusion. Ray used that moment, his gaze remaining locked with hers, to activate Serene Cultivator’s ‘Aetheric Perception’ skill and the World Weary Healer’s ‘Diagnosis (Intermediate)’ skill.

He saw it. His vision shifted to the Aetheric map of her body. The five ‘nodes’ he had so painstakingly primed were no longer just glowing embers. They were like stable, blazing stars. And the pathways between them, which had been dark, were now solid, flowing rivers of energy. The ‘power grid’ was online.

The archetypes immediately began to debate why.

Scholar: ”IT WORKED! The hypothesis was correct! It just needed time! An inert system can’t be’jump-started’ like Svane’s! Our Aether ’primed’ the nodes, and the last two days of her own body’s natural life-force settled into the new pathways, completing the circuit!”

Courtier: ”You fool! You’ve created a new disaster for us! A glowing, Aether-infused servant! How do we explain this?! This is a political catastrophe!”

Healer: ”It is a success. Her entire system is... vital. She’s stronger, healthier than before. This is a miracle. But the Courtier is right. That golden light is our Aether. But... is it her magic?”

Ray, still projecting his Calming Presence skill, kept his voice low and steady, anchoring Rina’s spiraling panic.

”Rina, that light... it’s the ’gift’ I gave you,”

he explained gently.

”The one that healed Sergeant Svane. It seems it has... ’unlocked’ something inside you. But that is my energy. We need to find out what your energy is.”

Rina looked from her glowing hands to his calm face, her terror slowly giving way to a dazed, uncomprehending awe.

”I need you to do the Mana Affinity test again.”

Ray said.

Dazed and terrified but trusting him completely, Rina nodded. She followed him as he walked back into the workshop. She looked at the Attunement Sphere on the workbench as if it were a bomb. Ray gave her a small, reassuring nod.

She took a shaky breath and placed her trembling, golden-glowing hands on the sphere.

For a second, nothing happened. Then, a bizarre, new phenomenon occurred. The golden-white Aether light in her hands flickered... and was drawn inward, as if the Sphere was a vacuum, pulling the energy from her. The golden glow left her hands, sinking into the crystal. The Sphere, which had been dark, ignited.

It did not glow golden-white. It glowed with a deep, smokey, violet light. The glow was faint, almost like a black light devouring the ambient light in the room, but it was stable and undeniable.

Rina just stared, her hands still on the sphere, her mind completely blank. She was stunned. Mute. Staring at the proof of the impossible.

Ray’s internal committee, however, was anything but.

Scholar: ”Fascinating! It’s not Primordial! The Aether was just the ’catalyst’! It burned away her inert state, revealing her own latent, dormant affinity. An Umbral (Shadow) Affinity. Perfect for her skill set.”

Courtier: ”This... this is manageable. A rare but known’ affinity is far better than a heretical Aether-wielder. We can build a narrative for this.”

As Ray processed the Scheming Courtier’s profound relief, a silent notification bloomed in his mind.

[SKILLED APPLICATION DETECTED]

[EVENT: AETHERIC CATALYSIS (SUCCESS)]

[PERFORMANCE EVALUATION: INSPIRED]

[ANALYSIS: Host successfully used a novel, high-level synthesis of Anatomical Strike, Aetheric Suture, and Aether Weaving to ’build’ and ’ignite’ a dormant magical circuit in a non-magical subject. This act of ’magical creation,’ using host pure Aether as a catalyst to unlock a subject’s latent Mana potential is a paradigm-shifting success. Largest Mastery Gain awarded.]

[MASTERY GAIN: Anatomical Strike +20%, Aetheric Suture +15%, Aether Weaving +10%.]

[INSPIRED RESULT: Your success in using your pure Aether as a ’spark of creation’ has unlocked a new Innate Skill: Aetheric Catalyst (Basic). You can now consciously channel your Aether into a target to attempt to repair damaged energy pathways (like Svane) or ignite latent, dormant pathways (like Rina). Success is not guaranteed and is dependent on the host’s skill and the target’s underlying potential.]

Courtier: ”Hmmm… ’Success is not guaranteed and is dependent on the target’s underlying potential.’”

Conman: ”We have something to hope for here. Svane had a broken potential. Rina had a hidden potential. What if the Shadow Guards... just had NO potential?”

Courtier: ”Precisely. It’s not a miracle cure for everyone. It is entirely possible that the host ’treatment’ on the Shadow Guards did nothing at all because they lacked the specific ’latent’ or ’damaged’ conditions. The time bomb... may not be a bomb after all. This is an acceptable, manageable risk.”

As Ray’s archetypes were evaluating the implication of the system notification, Rina’s trembling voice pulled him back to reality.

She was looking at her own hands, which were no longer glowing. Then she looked at the Attunement Sphere, which was still emitting that faint, smokey, violet light. She was terrified.

”Young master… what do I do?”

Ray’s mind snapped back to the present. He was now, officially, in ‘tutor’ mode.

”You have an Umbral affinity,”

he said, his voice calm.

”It’s magic. Your magic. The sphere just... woke it up. Try to... call it. Feel it.”

”Feel it?”

Rina tried. She squeezed her eyes shut, held out her hand, and concentrated with all her might. Nothing. A frantic edge entered her voice.

”I can’t! I don’t know how! I... I can’t feel it!”

She had the engine, but she didn’t know how to turn the key.

Scholar: ”Fascinating. She lacks the foundational theoretical framework. She has no cognitive model for Mana manipulation.”

Weaver: ”Stop thinking! She doesn’t need theory! She needs to feel it! She doesn’t know how to feel it! It’s like giving someone a paintbrush but not showing them how to mix the colors! Just give her the ’how,’ you idiot!”

Ray’s eyes widened.

Of course. She has the ’hardware’ but not the ’software.’ She needs the foundational framework.”

He made his decision.

”Rina, stop,”

he said gently. She opened her tear-filled eyes.

”Relax. I’m going to... share with you another gift from my patron. It will give you the foundation to control this new power.”

Rina looked at Ray and slowly nodded. Ray put his hand on Rina’s head as he focused on his will.

System, activate Understudy Protocol. Impart ‘Mana Weaving’ skill to designated target. Understudy 1: ’Rina Hawthorne’.

[COMMAND RECEIVED. IMPARTING Crimson Weaver’s ‘Mana Weaving’ skill to Understudy 1: ’Rina Hawthorne’.]

[WARNING: THIS ACTION WILL INCUR A SIGNIFICANT COGNITIVE COST.]

Rina gasped at the exact same moment, a sharp, sudden intake of breath as the ”knowledge” flooded her mind. It wasn’t a theory; it was a feeling. The internal motion. The sense of how to reach for that new, dormant power.

Ray was hit by a wave of familiar intense, cognitive drain. He let out a sharp, involuntary gasp and tried to steady himself against the sudden mental exhaustion.

Rina opened her eyes, dazed, but her daze vanished instantly when she saw Ray. He was pale, sweating, and leaning heavily against the workbench. She had seen this before.

”Young master!”

She was already familiar with this. Her new, terrifying power was forgotten, her priority instantly shifting. She didn’t panic; she acted and sprinted from the alchemy lab, her footsteps echoing in the suite.

A moment later, she was back, not with a terrified expression, but with a plate of high-calorie food from the kitchen, cheese, sweet bread, and cured meat.

”Eat,”

she asked, her voice firm, holding the plate out to him.

”Please. Now.”

Ray took a piece of cheese, the rich, oily energy a balm to soothe his exhausted mind. He gave her a small, grateful nod and ate. Internally, Ray felt the Crimson Weaver’s Neural Gastronomy skill kicking in . The calories from the food began to convert, easing the sharpest edge of the mental drain. His breathing steadied.

”Now... try again. The way the... ’knowledge’... showed you.”

Ray instructed her.

Rina, her immediate concern for him easing, looked down at her hands, her terror replaced by a stunned, dawning awe. She took a breath, concentrating on the feeling the system had just given her. She consciously willed the smokey, violet aura to appear.

It was faint, barely a wisp of shadow clinging to her fingertips, but it was hers.

She had her new path.

Ray watched her, a piece of cheese in his hand, the mental exhaustion still fading, replaced by the staggering implications of what he had just done.

This changes everything.
