The Legendary Method Actor

Ray found Rina in the main living area, still quietly, obsessively tidying the already spotless furniture. He approached her, his expression carefully neutral, deciding to test the Grizzled Veteran’s blunt theory .

”Rina,”

he said, his voice calm and steady.

”Let’s run some drills. A light training session. It might help to get back to the routine.”

Rina’s hands stilled. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with a flicker of her old fear, but she was desperate to prove she wasn’t the useless, frozen girl from the fight. She wanted to prove she wasn’t a burden. She gave a jerky, unconvincing nod.

”Yes, young master. Of course.”

The moment they stepped into the training room, it was a disaster . Rina picked up her training dagger, but her grip was stiff, her posture a rigid mask of terror. The Survival Instincts skill, a tool meant to help her, had become her enemy .

Ray moved silently across the mat, his footwork a whisper on the stone. Rina flinched, a small gasp escaping her lips as she stumbled back, her eyes darting to the shadow he had just passed through .

”Focus, Rina,”

Ray said gently.

He moved again, a simple evasive maneuver, and the sound of his silent footwork made her jump, her eyes wide with panic. The training dagger clattered from her nerveless fingers, skittering across the floor.

Rina knelt down, frozen, her gaze fixed on the empty space where Ray stood. Her body was trembling violently.

”I’m sorry, young master!”

she cried, her voice breaking, furious at her own weakness.

”I don’t... I can’t...”

Her breathing hitched, her eyes wide with a terror that was not in the room.

”I just... I keep seeing that monster’s face...”

She was paralyzed by the memory, completely broken . The Veteran’s theory was not just wrong; it was cruel.

Ray knelt beside her on the mat, changing his posture from one of authority to one of support.

”Rina,”

he said, his voice quiet, that of a patient mentor.

”Your fear is real, and it’s a trauma response. But it’s still yours. I won’t take it from you. Instead, I can offer you a tool to find your center. A way to find... calm... in the middle of the storm.”

Rina looked up, her face streaked with tears, her eyes red and desperate for any solution .

”What? Like... like magic?”

“A ’gift’ that I can share with you, like before,”

Ray said, his voice steady and sincere.

”A skill from my patron that offers stillness. It’s a form of a mental ’anchor,’ a silent, still place in your mind you can retreat to.”

Rina looked at his steady, sincere eyes. She was terrified of what she had become, but she trusted him more. She trusted Ray would not do her harm . She gave a small, shaky nod.

Ray’s expression was unreadable as his internal committee fell silent. He had made his decision . He rejected the Veteran’s harshness and the Assassin’s cold, numbing ‘cure’. He gently placed his hand on Rina’s forehead. Her skin was cold and damp.

System, impart skill: Serene Cultivator’s ‘Meditative Stillness’ to Understudy One, Rina Hawthorne.

Rina gasped, a sharp, sudden intake of breath . The effect was immediate. It was not the cold, hollow void of the Assassin’s detachment. It was a sudden, profound quiet . The screaming, paralyzing panic in her mind didn’t vanish; it was as if it was suddenly happening on the other side of a thick glass wall . She could still see the terrifying, blank-faced memory of K , still feel the echo of her fear, but it could no longer touch her, no longer overwhelm her senses. She was, for the first time, in the eye of her own storm .

As she processed the sudden, jarring peace, a quiet notification bloomed in Ray’s mind.

Rina let out a long, shuddering breath. Her voice was shaky, but the desperate, frantic edge was gone.

”I... I can still feel it. The fear,”

she whispered, her eyes opening, dazed.

”But... it’s not... overwhelming me. It’s just... there. I can... I can still think.”

Ray felt the cognitive drain as a dull throb behind his eyes, but he ignored it, watching her intently . He saw the raw terror recede from her eyes, replaced by a dazed, dawning focus. As if guided by an instinct she never knew she possessed, Rina slowly shifted her position on the mat, drawing her legs into a cross-legged position . She closed her eyes again, her breathing deepening as she instinctively began to explore this new, quiet, and safe space in her own mind.

Ray watched Rina for a long moment, seeing that she was anchored and safe, her breathing slowly deepening. His own mind was aching from the cognitive cost of the transfer .

He quietly slipped out of the training room, his movements silent, and went to the kitchenette . He found the plate of food Rina had prepared for him earlier . He sat down and ate, the meal which had gone cold that Rina had prepared for her earlier. Ray felt an immediate comfort, as he chewed, he felt the Crimson Weaver’s Neural Gastronomy skill kick in, the calories converting into a warm, soothing wave that eased his mental stamina .

Healer: ”This is the right path. Not a quick fix, but true healing. She must learn to master this tool herself.”

The World Weary Healer voice affirmed in his mind.

With his energy restored, Ray walked back into the training room. Rina was still there, meditating , just as he had left her. But her face was no longer a mask of terror; it was one of intense, focused concentration . She was already at work.

A small, proud smile touched Ray’s lips. He didn’t interrupt her. He didn’t leave her .

Instead, he walked silently to the mat across from her, sat down in the same cross-legged position, and closed his own eyes . He entered his own meditative state, beginning his own cultivation.

The two of them, master and apprentice, anchor and ally, sat in a shared, profound silence . They were not just healing; they were training. This was their new routine, a path they would now walk together.

The next day, Ray sat cross-legged in his private room immersed in his daily routine of cultivation, pulling in the ambient Aether of the Spire as he practiced the Ashvane Method , focused on the slow, steady work of increasing his Life-Force Capacity .

His meditation was interrupted by a sharp, silent chime from the system.

[SYSTEM ALERT: Scrying ward ’Main Entrance Area’ has detected three individuals approaching. Analyzing signatures...]

[IDENTITY CONFIRMED: HEADMASTER SALOME ANDRADE. 2x SHADOW GUARD ESCORT.]

Ray’s eyes opened, his focus absolute. He calmly uncrossed his legs and stood. He walked from his bedroom into the main suite, where Sergeant Svane, alerted by his own keen senses, was already standing near the door, his posture a mask of professional neutrality . Ray met the sergeant’s gaze, gave a single nod, and opened the door.

Headmaster Andrade stood in the corridor, her expression unreadable, flanked by her two elite, dark-clad Shadow Guards . She entered the suite, her eyes briefly sweeping the now-clean and orderly room before landing on Ray. She nodded once in greeting, then glanced back at her guards.

”Secure the perimeter. No one enters.”

The two guards gave a synchronized, silent bow and seemed to dissolve backward into the shadows of the corridor, vanishing from sight .

Rina emerged from the kitchenette, alerted by the Headmaster’s voice. She was no longer the trembling, hollow-eyed girl from the previous night. Her new Meditative Stillness training held her steady, her fear walled off behind a new, quiet focus. She gave the Headmaster a respectful and perfectly composed curtsy.

”Headmaster,”

Rina said, her voice even.

”May I prepare some tea for you?”

Andrade shook her head politely.

”That won’t be necessary, attendant. This will not be long.”

Ray, Headmaster Andrade, and Sergeant Svane stood in the main hall of the suite . Rina, having been politely dismissed by the Headmaster, had retreated to the kitchenette. Sergeant Svane, however, remained. He was not standing at the door as a guard, but had taken a position a few paces behind Ray, a subtle, non-verbal act of loyalty that was not lost on the Headmaster . Her emerald eyes flickered to the sergeant for a fraction of a second, her expression tightening, before she focused back on Ray.

She got straight to the point.

”The investigation you requested into Mage Drennan is complete,”

she said, her voice a cold, formal instrument.

”He was found two days ago in a rented room in the lower city. Deceased. The body had started to rot. Based on the examination, he has been dead for about two weeks. The city guard ruled it a suicide.”

Ray’s expression remained neutral, but his mind was racing.

Detective: ”Two weeks, the timeline matches the academy logs perfectly . Exit logged 14 days ago. K’s been in this skin for at least that long. ’Suicide’? No. K is a professional. That’s not a cleanup; it’s a message. A loose end neatly tied.”

The Gritty Detective’s voice was a low growl in his mind.

”However, we found this,”

Andrade continued. She produced a magically-reproduced copy of a letter and handed it to him.

”It was among his personal effects.”

Ray read the letter. It detailed a ‘lucrative offer’ for Drennan’s family, who, as the letter noted, were in deep financial trouble, in exchange for his ‘discreet services.”

Courtier: ”So K didn’t just steal the identity; K ‘bought’ it, K found a desperate, harmless student and made him a willing accomplice, right before disposing of him. A perfect infiltration vector.”

The Scheming Courtier purred.

This confirms the infiltration was planned for weeks , Ray concluded grimly, just as he’d surmised from the logs . K hadn’t just been lucky; K had been meticulous.
