My Infinite System.

Lucian kept the bone chip on the chair through the night and was irritated by its ordinariness.

He dozed uneasily in the hours before first bell, waking to the same question. Take the run and find what sat behind Derrin. Refuse and hold onto the clean status of Sull’s line. Hesitate and turn an absence into an answer. There were costs to each decision. He washed and dressed and tucked the chip into his coat long enough to talk himself out of calling it refuse.

Cael spoke while he locked the room.

”If you go, you open a channel you do not control.”If I stay, I’m furniture on someone else’s inventory list,” Lucian muttered. ”Derrin wasn’t wrong about that.”

”He wasn’t wrong about the bait, either.”

Lucian headed for the yards, regardless.

A man who changed patterns on the morning of a suspicious approach needed to look guilty even if he was only careful. Sull had him on depot transfer again. He shifted, he hauled, he kept his output at standard levels, he let Pesh debate crane maintenance and overpriced work gloves. When Sull asked if he were available through the week, Lucian said yes and meant it for the duration, until the pay came and the tax cut and he walked with the morning wave as he always did.

It was only after that he headed towards Hold Market, walking the daylight streets where the same stalls sold tools, meat, fabric, and closed jars, where the same arguments about price bled through the square. Lucian bought nothing at first, mapping out exits and handoffs, finding the night seller Derrin had named by asking a fruit vendor which stall stayed open latest near the south posts.

”Black awning,” the fruit seller said. ”The man with the split ear. He sells rope and whatever else you think rope is.” She paused. ”Why?”

”Need cord.”

”Then you found him.”

The seller with the split ear was restocking hooks when Lucian came to stop in front of the stall, not the kind of man to advertise the fact that he was a contact. He looked like the kind of man to have stood in this square for a long time, studying every buyer’s face.

”You’re buying or browsing?” the seller asked.

Lucian laid the bone chip on the board between them, neither hiding it nor announcing it. ”Derrin said to drop this before last bell.”

The seller’s eyes flickered over the chip, past Lucian’s hands, and back to his face before he touched the board. He finished setting a hook down before he picked it up. ”You’re early.”

”I had time.”

”People with time still wait for dark when they’re nervous.” The seller turned the chip over, studying the stamp with his thumb. ”What’s your name?”

”Lucian.”

”Just Lucian?”

”Yes.”

”Of course.” The seller tucked the chip into his pocket and scored a tiny notch in the tally stick beneath the counter. ”You’re in. Warehouse row, behind the old salt store. Second bell tomorrow night. You come alone. If you bring a friend, the friend walks back and you don’t work again.”

”Pay?”

”On delivery. Derrin’s rate for first run. You break a seal, you don’t get anything and you get a bad memory.” The seller pinned Lucian with a squint. ”You done this kind of work before?”

”I’ve moved things people wanted moved.”

”That’s the most careful answer I’ve heard all week.” The seller almost smiled. ”Bring work gloves. Don’t bring questions into the warehouse. Ask Derrin after if you live curious.”

Lucian measured the distance between them for a second longer. ”If I come and the job has changed into something else?”

”Then you leave.” The seller sounded surprised that the fact should even need saying. ”Nobody here is obligated to die for Derrin’s schedule. You walk when the work doesn’t match the pitch. That’s the Free rule. The smart ones still remember it.”

”And the houses?”

The seller’s expression tightened. ”If houses are directly on a run, Derrin says or he loses people. He likes repeat hands more than one ugly payday.” He waved at the coil of cord. ”Buy something so you’re not standing there like pure business.”

Lucian paid for a length of undecorated cord he did not need and walked away with it in his hands. The market noise swallowed him again. No one trailed him that he could identify, no Watch coat turned at his name. The commitment clung heavier than the cord.

Cael waited until Lucian came to a quieter lane.

”You picked the channel.”

”I picked one night and one carry,” Lucian said. ”That’s all they bought.”

”That’s all they need for the first measure of you.”

Lucian knew that well enough. First runs were tests in disguise, gauging how a man went into a job. If he came clean or if he lied, if he froze at shadows or if he opened boxes without being asked, if he took chances or if he ran when the odds turned. He’d used similar filters in other lives when people needed sorting.

He came back to Reed Street as the sun was going down. Old Henn was at the desk mending a hinge, and didn’t bother with a greeting.

”You buy rope now?” Henn asked.

”Cord.”

”Same difference when a man lives alone and has no washing line.” Henn set the hinge aside. ”You taking side work?”

Lucian paused on the stair. ”Why ask?”

”Because your face is the same and your timing isn’t.” Henn shrugged. ”Yard men come back hungry and empty-handed. You come back with new cord and a thought behind the eyes.” He tapped the side of his nose. ”I don’t want trouble under my roof. I also don’t want sermons. If you pick irregular routes, keep them out of my hallway.”

”I will.”

”Good.” Henn turned back to the hinge. ”Side work pays better until it doesn’t.” He tapped the hinge. ”Eat before you plan. Hungry men call risks opportunity.”

Lucian went up, left the cord on the chair, and sat by the window with the city token, the remaining discs, and the empty space where the bone chip had been. Tomorrow night, warehouse row, behind the old salt store, alone, delivery against pay.

He could still burn the schedule and stay on Sull’s books. Part of him liked the neatness of that, the way it left him untouched as higher rooms prepared for delegates and houses prowled for useful Frees. One careful step off the open board was better than waiting for selection.

He washed, stretched his hands, laid down early.

Sleep came fitfully, every time he surfaced certain the decision was made. He’d put the chip in Derrin’s system. The run was afoot. The city had a position for him tomorrow night that wasn’t the river yards.

He rose before first bell, prepared to spend one more day looking the part of a man who only wanted rent.

After that, he’d find what table had really bought his hands.
