Death Game: Starting as a Trickster, Pretending to Be a God

Chapter 499: The Truth Behind the Coming-of-Age Ceremony

Lin Yu was definitely just stringing Sleepless Sky Huole along.

He had entered this birthday banquet with the intention of killing someone.

However, Lin Yu truly had no plans to kill Sleepless Sky Huoxing—his target was Alt Mercury.

But Sleepless Sky Huole clearly believed Lin Yuʼs story.

”True, with your guts, killing someone in a public place like this is probably too much for you... In fact, Iʼd say even the act of killing itself is likely a difficult thing for you.”

Sleepless Sky Huole made his judgment based on his past impressions of Fu Luo.

This judgment couldnʼt be called wrong, because Lin Yu thought the same.

Unfortunately, the current ”Furbollo” was not Fu Luo.

Sleepless Sky Huole continued speaking.

”However, this coming-of-age ceremony is indeed a great opportunity for ʼSocialʼ interaction, perfect for both making connections and gathering information—basically all members of the Sleepless Night Family will attend this ceremony, and other noble families from Sleepless City will also send representatives.”
”Father, the father of both Sleepless Sky Huo Shu and Sleepless Sky Huoxing, has been planning this coming-of-age ceremony for a long time, even inviting many people you normally never see... like those who have already gone into seclusion.”

As Sleepless Sky Huole spoke, Lin Yu gave a slight nod.

This was probably why the C-77 assassination commission was set during Sleepless Sky Huoxingʼs coming-of-age ceremony.

Although carrying out the hit at the Sleepless Night Family estate seemed dangerous, this might actually be the best opportunity to kill Alt Mercury!

This old man, who once held great power, had taken a position at Truth Corporation precisely to diminish his influence within the Mercury family, so he must normally live a very reclusive life with extremely mysterious movements, making him very hard to find.

Of course, there was another possibility...

”Perhaps the person hiring the assassin deliberately chose such a grand occasion as ʼSleepless Sky Huoxingʼs Coming-of-Age Ceremonyʼ.”

After all, when a noble is assassinated, those who want him dead might not just want him dead.

How a noble dies when assassinated... is also crucial.

Whether itʼs grand or secretive, humiliating or dignified.

A Peerage Noble, and one who once served as family head at that, carries too much weight.

Even the angle at which he falls when he dies could trigger different repercussions.

However, for Lin Yu, while these things were worth pondering briefly, there was no need to delve too deeply into them.

He just needed to secure the commission, no need to get too deeply entangled in Sleepless Cityʼs power struggles.

”So, why is this coming-of-age ceremony being made such a grand affair?”

Lin Yu casually asked.

Sleepless Sky Huole shrugged, appearing rather nonchalant. ”Their birth father has always been very particular about pomp and ceremony... After all, he was originally just a baronʼs descendant, marrying into the Sleepless Night Family was considered climbing the social ladder.”

”Of course, thereʼs probably another reason related to Sleepless Sky Huoxing herself.”

As Sleepless Sky Huole said this, Lin Yu became intrigued.

”You mentioned her peculiar personality earlier, so whatʼs so special about Sleepless Sky Huoxing?”

In Lin Yuʼs view, these Peerage Nobles were all a bit eccentric, every last one of them.

To be described by these people as ”eccentric” to the point of being considered completely non-threatening in the competition for the heir position, Lin Yu was a bit curious...

Just what kind of person was Sleepless Sky Huoxing, the star of this birthday banquet and coming-of-age ceremony?

Hearing Lin Yuʼs question, Sleepless Sky Huole sighed.

”Sheʼs basically a complete idiot. Forget being a noble... even among commoners, you rarely find anyone as bizarre as her.”

”The fact that youʼve been with the Sleepless Night Family for so long and havenʼt seen her speaks volumes.”

As Sleepless Sky Huole spoke, Lin Yu pondered for a moment before saying.

”There are many different directions stupidity can take.”

Sleepless Sky Huole continued explaining. ”Let me put it this way. Sleepless Sky Huoxing has basic self-care abilities, can do arithmetic, read and write, and even shows moments of ʼabnormal intelligenceʼ at times—when she was fourteen, she went out with her attendants and managed to shake off all her guards in just five minutes.”

”When they finally found her, she was in a trash can in the Outer City district, hanging out with a group of raccoons and sharing food with them.”

Lin Yu couldnʼt help but feel a surge of respect. ”Donʼt you Peerage Nobles receive any education?”

”Clearly, her way of understanding the world is vastly different from normal peopleʼs. Education has only mitigated this somewhat, it canʼt cure or eradicate it.”

As Sleepless Sky Huole spoke, he also showed a somewhat pained expression.

Normally, as Sleepless Sky Huo Shuʼs biological younger sister—even if their relationship was bad—if Sleepless Sky Huoxing was a foolish individual, that would definitely be good news worth celebrating for Sleepless Sky Huole.

But obviously, Sleepless Sky Huoxingʼs stupidity, in a certain sense, could be a huge problem for the entire Sleepless Night Family.

So Sleepless Sky Huoleʼs current concern was that of a member of the Sleepless Night Family.

”That makes it even stranger then. Since Sleepless Sky Huoxing is so ʼabnormalʼ, and the Sleepless Night Familyʼs past strategy has always been to keep her hidden, why on the day of her coming-of-age ceremony are they making such a big fuss, holding such a grand event?”

Lin Yu asked, somewhat puzzled.

Sleepless Sky Huole answered Lin Yuʼs question. ”Simple. Because since she was born into the Sleepless Night Family, she must serve her value. Since her demonstrated behavior makes her incapable of managing the family or joining a corporation, only one path remains.”

”Marriage alliance—at least her bloodline as a member of the Sleepless Night Family is genuine, and she is the legitimate Second Miss of Sleepless Night.”

Sleepless Sky Huole said flatly.

”Itʼs less a birthday banquet and coming-of-age ceremony, and more a high-priced commodity exhibition titled ʼSleepless Sky Huoxingʼ... letting those willing to bid, those qualified to be buyers, see the quality of my little sister.”

Hearing Sleepless Sky Huoleʼs words, Lin Yu let out a long sigh.

”Truly worthy of being nobles, truly worthy of Sleepless City... even your own people can be viewed as commodities?”

”Thatʼs pretty cruel.”

Sleepless Sky Huole laughed. ”Cruel? Perhaps. But in my view, itʼs already very merciful.”

”If I lose, I wonʼt even have the right to be exhibited and auctioned off as a commodity.”

At this point, Sleepless Sky Huole paused briefly before speaking again.

”Alright, anyway, if you want to attend this coming-of-age ceremony, I can directly give you an invitation... I can get as many of these as I want.”

”But Iʼd actually recommend you mention this directly to my mother. Sheʼd probably be very pleased that you took the initiative to express interest in attending Sleepless Sky Huoxingʼs coming-of-age ceremony.”

”Besides, you should go see her.”
