The Roach God

The second time Sacha Meyer died, it didn’t hurt.

That was the part that stuck with him in the last half-second before the world went white.

The first time, nine years old, drowning in a lake with his mother screaming somewhere above the surface, had hurt so much he still dreamed about it two decades later.

This time, a collapsing scaffold and a stranger he’d been trying to drag clear, there was just a sound like a door slamming shut on the whole universe, and then nothing.

No tunnel, no light, no dead relatives waiting with open arms. Just dark, and wet, and the smell of rot so thick he could taste it on the back of his tongue, long before he had a tongue to taste it with.

His first thought, when thought became possible again, was I’m blind. His second thought was why do I have six legs?

He didn’t panic.

Eleven years pulling strangers out of car wrecks had burned panic out of him at the root and replaced it with something colder and more useful:

the habit of taking inventory before reacting to anything.

So he took inventory.

Six limbs, moving independently.

Two long antennae sweeping the air, painting him a picture of the world in vibrations instead of light.

A flattened body that could slide between two slabs of concrete with room to spare.

He was small.

He was fast.

And when he found a crack of grey light and looked down at his own reflection in a puddle, he understood exactly what he’d become:

a cockroach, three centimeters long, in the crawlspace under what smelled like an abandoned apartment block.

”Okay,” he said, and no sound came out, just a faint click of mandibles. ”One existential crisis. Then we move on.”

He gave himself thirty seconds, the same way he used to count chest compressions. Then a pressure settled behind what used to be his forehead, and words arrived that weren’t quite words, an understanding dropped into his mind whole, the way a diagnosis sometimes appears before the test results confirm it.

[A spark has taken root in unclaimed flesh.

Sanctuary: forming.

Status: Divine Creature, unranked.]

No golden light.

No welcome chime.

Just a flat, clinical fact, the same tone a doctor uses in a hospital corridor when the news is bad and softening it wouldn’t help anyone. Sacha would keep seeing text like this, bracketed, blunt, unasked-for, for the rest of whatever this life turned out to be, and it took him a while to understand the one thing about it that mattered most: it wasn’t flavor text for a game. Nothing was rendering, nothing was simulated, no one was keeping score for entertainment. This was simply how reality reported itself to him now, the same way a heart monitor reports a pulse. A second layer of truth laid directly over the first, and just as real as the concrete under his six new feet.

Sacha turned the words over as carefully as his half-formed insect brain allowed.

Unclaimed flesh meant other flesh, somewhere, was already claimed: other sparks like his, in other bodies, that had gotten here first or gotten luckier.

He didn’t know yet how many consciousnesses had woken up that same night in wolves, in rats, in hawks, in things with far more teeth than he currently owned.

He only knew, with total certainty, that his new body could be ended by a dropped shoe, and that whatever this system was, he’d been dealt the worst hand at the table and told to play it anyway.

The crawlspace shuddered.

Something large was moving close by.

Sacha went very still, and stayed still for a long time, longer than fear required, because the stillness was giving him information and the moving would not.

Vibration, carried up through six legs at once. Heavy for whatever it was. Irregular in a way that meant legs rather than machinery.

Not approaching directly.

Working a perimeter, if he was reading it right, and he had no confidence at all that he was reading it right, because he had owned this body for under an hour and every instrument on it was unfamiliar.

He filed the sensation anyway, in the same place he’d once filed the specific sound a car door makes when it has been forced open by someone who knows what they’re doing. You didn’t have to understand a signal to start collecting it. You just had to notice it early enough that the tenth one meant something.

The vibration faded east and did not come back.

Only then did he let himself finish the thought he’d started at the puddle, the one he’d been putting off since the word unranked arrived without a manual.

Something had picked him up out of a scaffold collapse and put him down here.

Something had bothered to tell him what he was.

Which meant there was a system, and systems had rules, and rules could be learned by anyone patient enough to keep score.

He had been dealt the worst hand at the table.

He’d been dealt bad hands before. What he’d learned, over eleven years of them, was that the people who died on his gurney were almost never the ones with the worst injuries.

They were the ones nobody had assessed properly in the first four minutes.

Sacha started counting.

The nest, if it deserved the word, was a gap behind a rusted dead water heater, home to roughly forty roaches who had never shared one collective thought between them in their lives. Sacha watched them for two full days before acting, not hesitation, but triage, the same instinct that had once told him where the real danger was at a crash site before he moved a single muscle.

He learned which roaches went out foraging and returned, and which went out and simply didn’t. He traced the pattern back to its source:

a wolf spider, fist-sized to him now, that had claimed the drainpipe mouth as a hunting ground and was quietly bleeding his nest dry, one careless straggler at a time.

Forty bodies.

Zero coordination.

Just blind, twitching survival, and a spider working through them like a patient, unhurried buffet.

Five of you working together could kill that thing in an afternoon, he thought, watching another one vanish mid-scuttle without so much as a ripple through the rest.

But none of the others were awake the way he was, except, maybe, one.

A smaller roach near the back of the nest didn’t scatter at every stray vibration.

It watched, the way he watched, and Sacha had spent enough years reading the body language of people who couldn’t speak, stroke patients, the very old, the very young, to recognize attention wherever he found it, even folded into an insect that had no business paying attention to anything.

He crossed the floor and stopped in front of it.

It didn’t flee.

You’re in here too, aren’t you, he thought, and felt something close to hope for the first time since his second death, a genuinely stupid thing to feel while hiding from a spider, and he let himself feel it anyway.

He’d give it a name later.

Right now he had a spider problem, and forty living bodies that could either keep dying alone, one at a time, forever, or be turned, badly and with no guarantee of success, into something that finally fought back.
