ARK SPIRIT

That night, Hao Nhien did not sleep.

Tieu Lan eventually dozed off beside the small table, one hand still clutching the corner of his sleeve. Hao Nhien tried twice to gently free it, but each time he moved, her fingers tightened unconsciously and her brows drew together faintly, as though even in sleep she was afraid he might disappear.

In the end, he stopped trying.

The oil lamp had burned very low. Pale yellow light trembled across the wooden walls while the Thanh Van River continued to flow outside, water brushing against the hull in a steady rhythm. The deck had already been washed, but a faint metallic smell still lingered in the air, and two dark reddish stains remained between the boards.

Hao Nhien looked at Tieu Lan’s sleeping face.

Something had changed tonight.

He had already known that the Fading Clouds Continent was dangerous. He had told himself many times that this was not his old world, that in a place where personal strength could decide life and death, hesitation could carry a price.

Tonight, that knowledge had finally become real.

The problem was not that he had refused to kill Han Thien Phong.

The problem was that he had allowed himself to ask what he should do while the fight was still happening.

A sword would not wait for him to finish deciding.

Neither would an enemy.

Hao Nhien lowered his eyes.

If he did not want to kill, then he had to remove the enemy’s ability to continue fighting. If they could be restrained, restrain them. If they could be forced to retreat, make retreat their only reasonable choice.

And if none of those choices remained…

He did not like the final answer.

But next time, he could not wait until a blade was already at his neck before remembering that it existed.

That was enough.

He did not need to replay the blood again.

He only needed to remember the mistake.

Near dawn, when Tieu Lan finally fell into a deeper sleep, Hao Nhien gently draped his outer robe over her shoulders and stepped onto the deck.

The sky beyond the Thanh Van Mountains had only begun to pale. Cold river wind brushed against his face as he stood where the previous night’s battle had taken place.

He no longer needed to reconstruct every strike.

He only considered the moment after Han Thien Phong fell.

He could have retreated and pulled Tieu Lan into the cabin, forcing the remaining two men into a narrow approach. He could have drawn the Tieu Dao Sword and made them hesitate before closing in. He could have kept moving and pressured one of them before they regained their formation.

There had been choices.

What he had lacked was not merely killing intent.

It was a decision made in time.

Hao Nhien looked toward the whitening horizon.

From now on, questions about his own limits had to be answered before they could interrupt the fight.

That was the lesson he chose to keep.

When the sun rose above the mountains, Tieu Lan woke and hurried out onto the deck.

Only after seeing Hao Nhien beside the rail did the tension leave her face.

”Young Master…”

Hao Nhien turned.

”You’re awake?”

Tieu Lan nodded. Her eyes were still slightly swollen.

”Have you been out here long?”

”Mm. I was thinking about last night.”

She pressed her lips together before saying softly, ”Young Master, don’t blame yourself too much.”

Hao Nhien looked at her.

”Uncle That wasn’t wrong,” she continued, ”but I don’t want Young Master to hate yourself because of what happened. You’ve never had to do something like that before. You hesitated because you weren’t used to it, not because you were weak.”

Hao Nhien was silent for a moment.

”I don’t hate myself.”

”Really?”

”I’m only remembering what went wrong.”

Tieu Lan studied his face for several breaths before finally nodding.

”Then rest for another day today?”

Hao Nhien shook his head.

”No heavy training. But I want to practice the sword.”

Her brows immediately drew together.

”Young Master…”

”I’m not rushing.”

He rested one hand on the hilt of the Tieu Dao Sword.

”The strand of sword intent Senior left behind can touch an opponent’s soul before the physical blade arrives. I already know that much. The problem is simpler now.”

”What problem?”

”My sword is too slow.”

Tieu Lan remembered the faint chill she had felt before his blade moved and grew more serious.

”You’re going to use the sword intent again?”

”Only a few times. Most of today will be physical practice.”

She hesitated before nodding.

”Then I’ll stay nearby. If your head starts hurting, you stop.”

”Agreed.”

That morning, Hao Nhien did not go to the waterfall or enter the river.

He stood on the deck with the Tieu Dao Sword in his hand while Tieu Lan sat near the cabin entrance with Clearheart Liquid, a clean cloth, and warm water beside her.

Hao Nhien began with the physical sword.

He no longer needed to discover the basic problem; he had already seen it the previous night. The strand of sword intent could move first, but his thrust arrived too late to take advantage of the opening it created.

This novel’s true home is a different platform. Support the author by finding it there.

So he worked on the interval between them.

The sword left its position and returned.

Again.

Then again.

He did not chase speed for its own sake. He only removed what did not need to exist.

An unnecessary preparation before the thrust.

A fraction of tension that delayed the hand.

A movement that made the attack visible before the sword actually traveled.

Each correction was small.

But the opening created by the sword intent would also be small.

That meant small things mattered.

After a long period of physical practice, Hao Nhien stopped and regulated his breathing.

Only then did he turn his awareness inward.

Deep within his soul, the strand of sword intent left by Nhat Kiem Tieu Dao remained quiet.

It was not his power.

It had not grown stronger because he had practiced.

All Hao Nhien could do was touch it briefly and borrow its movement.

He recalled the white-robed man’s thrust.

Straight.

Unhesitating.

A cold trace stirred within his soul.

Hao Nhien opened his eyes and thrust.

The sword intent moved first.

The physical blade followed.

Still late.

But not by as much as before.

He withdrew the sword and stood quietly for several breaths.

Then he tried once more.

This time, in his effort to shorten the interval, the blade lost a little accuracy.

Hao Nhien stopped.

That was enough information.

Faster but inaccurate was useless.

Accurate but too late was equally useless.

What he needed was not simply greater speed.

He needed timing.

From the cabin entrance, Tieu Lan asked,

”Better?”

”A little.”

”How little?”

Hao Nhien considered.

”Enough to know what to practice.”

Tieu Lan nodded solemnly.

”That sounds very much like something Young Master would say after failing.”

Hao Nhien glanced at her.

She immediately lowered her head and began rearranging the medicine bottles with suspicious concentration.

A faint smile appeared at the corner of his mouth.

Over the following days, Hao Nhien settled into a new rhythm.

He still practiced the three strikes and three steps each morning so that the foundation he had built would not grow unfamiliar. At midday, he rested and sometimes read medicinal texts with Tieu Lan. He had no intention of becoming a healer, but learning how to judge injuries had become increasingly necessary.

The afternoons belonged to the sword.

At night, he touched the strand of sword intent only a few times.

He soon confirmed something he had already suspected.

The physical sword could be practiced again and again as long as his muscles and joints could endure the strain.

The sword intent was different.

Three or four uses were enough to make the point between his brows feel heavy and his concentration begin to dull.

He never forced a fifth.

Whatever Nhat Kiem Tieu Dao had left behind touched the soul directly. Treating it like a muscle to be exhausted through repetition would be foolish.

So Hao Nhien focused almost entirely on the sword in his hand.

Not new techniques.

Not complicated forms.

One thrust.

From different positions.

While still.

While stepping.

After retreating.

From the sheath.

What mattered was not whether the movement looked impressive.

Only whether the sword could reach the right place at the right moment.

After several days, the thrust became cleaner.

A few days later, its beginning became harder to read.

By the end of the first week, Hao Nhien could stop the tip on a small mark along the boat rail without letting the blade shake.

Then he changed the target.

Because an enemy would not stand still.

He tied a narrow strip of cloth to a bamboo branch on the deck and let the river wind move it.

The first few attempts missed completely.

Others touched the edge.

A few arrived at the correct place but with too much force, pushing the cloth away rather than merely touching it.

Hao Nhien corrected each error as it appeared.

Soon the cloth was no longer enough.

He practiced on falling leaves, swaying twigs, and droplets of water that Tieu Lan released from the tip of a chopstick.

The rule remained the same.

Do not cut.

Do not chase.

Arrive where the target would be—

at the correct moment.

One afternoon, after watching him miss the same falling leaf repeatedly, Tieu Lan finally asked,

”Young Master, people aren’t as light as leaves.”

Hao Nhien withdrew the sword.

”But people don’t stand still like wooden posts either.”

She considered that.

”Then I could run back and forth while you practice.”

Hao Nhien looked at her.

Tieu Lan immediately reconsidered.

”…Maybe not.”

”Mm.”

Half a month passed.

The sword intent itself had not changed.

It was still Nhat Kiem Tieu Dao’s.

Hao Nhien still understood very little about what it truly was.

What changed was everything that came after it.

His physical sword responded sooner.

His timing became more precise.

The moment between intent and blade gradually narrowed.

One afternoon, the strip of cloth swayed in the wind before him.

Hao Nhien watched.

His breathing remained steady.

His awareness lightly touched the strand of sword intent.

Coldness flickered.

Near the cabin entrance, Tieu Lan suddenly shivered.

Almost at the same instant, the Tieu Dao Sword moved.

The tip touched the center of the cloth and stopped.

Tieu Lan stared.

”This time…”

Hao Nhien withdrew the blade.

”What?”

”I felt the cold almost when I saw your sword move.”

Hao Nhien was silent.

Before, the sensation had reached her clearly before the physical attack.

Now the interval had nearly collapsed into a single sequence.

Not one thing.

But connected.

That was enough.

The sword intent did not need to defeat anyone.

It only needed to disturb the opponent’s soul for the briefest instant.

The physical sword had to arrive inside that instant.

That was the entire idea.

Simple.

And difficult enough.

Hao Nhien looked down at the Tieu Dao Sword.

He still did not give the technique a name.

It was not ready for one.

Life aboard the boat gradually returned to a rhythm, though not to the peace they had known before.

The Han Family remained a shadow behind them.

Hao Nhien did not know whether Han Thien Phong had truly fled Dong Thanh or returned to report what had happened. Nor did he know where Quan Bach and his wife were now.

But Thanh Van Town was no longer a place where he could remain indefinitely.

He needed to become stronger before leaving.

Not strong enough to confront the Han Family.

That was still far beyond him.

Only strong enough that when danger came again, he would not die because of a mistake he had already learned how to correct.

Nearly a month after the attack, Hao Nhien’s straight thrust had become noticeably different.

To an ordinary observer, it still looked simple.

There was no sword light.

No explosive force.

No grand technique.

The sword merely went forward.

Yet the movement had become difficult to anticipate. The unnecessary signs before the thrust had faded, and the transition from stillness to attack had become increasingly direct.

The strand of sword intent was also easier for him to touch, though he still used it sparingly. On days when his mind felt heavy, he did not touch it at all.

No forcing.

No greed.

Nhat Kiem Tieu Dao had left behind something far beyond Hao Nhien’s current level. An inheritance could become a disaster if he mistook access for mastery.

At times, another thought surfaced.

Body-Soul Fist Art.

Body.

Soul.

Fist.

The fragmented memories of the previous Quan Hao Nhien contained plenty concerning the body and the fist.

But very little concerning the soul.

After experiencing how sword intent could touch the soul directly, Hao Nhien could no longer dismiss that missing word as meaningless.

Perhaps what the Quan Family had lost was not merely a few fist forms.

Perhaps the inheritance itself was incomplete in a deeper way.

But a name was not evidence.

He remembered the possibility and left it there.

Nothing more.

One month after the night of the attack, Hao Nhien ended his sword practice earlier than usual.

He sat cross-legged on the deck with the Tieu Dao Sword resting across his knees.

Moonlight stretched over the Thanh Van River in broken silver fragments. The night wind was gentle, and the boat moved almost imperceptibly with the current.

Hao Nhien did not touch the sword intent again.

He had already done enough.

Instead, he began circulating his true qi.

Slowly.

Naturally.

Over the past month, his body had settled fully into the third layer of Qi Condensation. His true qi had not increased in any dramatic surge, but there was more of it now, and its circulation had become smoother.

One cycle passed.

Then another.

On the third, Hao Nhien noticed a faint resistance near the hollow at the base of his throat.

He did not push against it.

He only observed.

On the next circulation, the sensation appeared again.

Slight pressure.

Clearer than before.

The true qi within his Qi Sea also felt fuller than he had expected.

Hao Nhien opened his eyes.

The fourth layer.

He had not reached it.

But the next bottleneck had begun to show itself.

This time, the obstruction had not appeared because he deliberately searched for something to break.

His body had simply accumulated enough for the next limit to become visible.

Hao Nhien immediately slowed the circulation and guided his true qi back toward his Qi Sea.

No breakthrough tonight.

He did not yet understand that section of his meridians well enough.

His supply of medicine was also running low.

And after the previous month, he had even less desire to deliberately weaken himself merely to reach another layer a few days earlier.

His gaze shifted toward the cabin.

Inside Nhat Kiem Tieu Dao’s storage ring were several spirit stones whose light had already faded considerably.

He had left them untouched until now.

Perhaps it was time to investigate them.

If spirit stones truly contained spiritual qi, how was that energy meant to be used?

Direct absorption?

Placed nearby during breathing cultivation?

Or did they require a method he had not yet learned?

Hao Nhien did not know.

Which meant the first step was obvious.

Test the smallest amount possible.

No breakthrough.

No greed.

Only observation.

He closed his eyes once more.

The Thanh Van River continued flowing beneath the moonlight.

The Tieu Dao Sword rested quietly across his knees.

And deep within his soul, the strand of sword intent remained silent—yet for the briefest moment,

as true qi passed near the hollow of his throat, it stirred, as if answering something he had not

yet learned to ask.

Tomorrow, the spirit stones.

After that, it would be time to leave.
