ARK SPIRIT

Back on the boat, Hao Nhien did not open the pale blue storage ring immediately.

He first checked the riverbank around them, then closed the cabin door before placing the Tieu Dao Sword and the ring on the low wooden table.

Tieu Lan sat opposite him with both hands resting neatly on her knees. Her expression was very serious.

Only her eyes kept drifting toward the ring.

Once.

Then again.

At last, she could no longer hold back.

”Young Master… can we look now?”

Hao Nhien glanced at her.

”You seem even more nervous than I am.”

”Of course.” Tieu Lan answered immediately. ”This was left behind by such a powerful senior. Maybe there are spirit stones inside, pills, cultivation arts…”

Halfway through, she suddenly stopped, as if realizing she sounded a little too greedy, and quickly added,

”I’m only guessing.”

Hao Nhien laughed.

”There may not be anything valuable inside.”

”That can’t be.”

Tieu Lan objected softly, but with complete certainty.

”A senior that powerful must have left behind something extraordinary.”

”Not necessarily.”

Hao Nhien picked up the storage ring.

”Maybe the most important thing he left behind was already written on the stone slab.”

Tieu Lan paused.

”Roam the world, follow your heart?”

”Mm.”

She thought about it for a moment, then nodded seriously.

”But it would still be better if there were both good words and spirit stones.”

Hao Nhien looked at her for several breaths.

Then he laughed out loud.

”That’s true.”

Only then did Tieu Lan smile as well.

The atmosphere inside the cabin eased a little.

Hao Nhien placed the pale blue ring in his palm.

From the scattered memories left behind by the former Quan Hao Nhien, he knew that this kind of storage ring usually required true qi to open. But knowing that was one thing. Testing something left behind by a Tribulation Transformation expert was another.

He did not immediately send spiritual qi into the storage ring.

First, he closed his eyes and allowed his breathing to settle. Then he extended only the faintest thread of spiritual sense toward the pale blue ring.

No offensive restriction.

No backlash.

No sense of rejection.

The ring was so quiet that it almost seemed as though its former owner had deliberately left it in this state, waiting for someone in the future to open it.

Hao Nhien tested it once more.

Only after confirming that nothing was wrong did he slowly send spiritual qi deeper inside.

A faint blue light flashed.

Within his perception, a small space opened.

Not large.

Only about the size of a narrow room.

There were no mountains of spirit stones.

No piles of pills like Tieu Lan had imagined.

Only a few objects resting quietly in one corner.

Three old books.

A sealed bottle of pills whose medicinal aura had almost completely faded.

Several translucent spirit stones, with faint light slowly turning within them.

Aside from those, there were only a few small objects that had decayed or lost their spirituality over the years.

Hao Nhien took them out one by one.

At first, Tieu Lan had been staring with wide, expectant eyes.

But after seeing the small pile of objects on the table, she could not quite hide her disappointment.

”Th-That’s all?”

”Mm.”

Tieu Lan blinked.

”This senior was… very simple.”

Hao Nhien looked at her, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly.

”You can just say you’re disappointed.”

Tieu Lan hurriedly shook her head.

”No. I just thought… for such a powerful senior, perhaps what he left behind wouldn’t be measured by quantity.”

Hao Nhien did not answer.

She was not wrong.

His gaze moved to the three books on the table.

The first had a worn leather cover, with four characters engraved across it.

Unfettered Sword Intent.

The second was slightly thicker.

Understanding the Laws of Heaven and Earth.

The final book had no clear title, only several faded marks across its cover. At a glance, it looked more like a handwritten journal.

Hao Nhien picked up the journal first.

The cover was old, but it had not rotted away, probably because the storage ring had preserved it.

He opened the first page.

Several lines of deeply written characters covered the pale yellow paper.

The handwriting was not refined or elegant.

But every stroke was firm and decisive, like a sword line that had passed through countless years of wind and rain.

Hao Nhien read slowly.

”To the one brought here by fate. If you have opened this ring, then you must already have seen the words I left upon the stone tablet.”

”Do not be disappointed.”

”I did not leave you a road already walked.”

”The things inside are merely a few objects I happened to leave behind. What you truly need, you must step out and find for yourself.”

Tieu Lan sat beside him.

Hearing this, she pressed her lips together slightly.

”This senior… even when comforting someone who comes after him, he’s very direct.”

Hao Nhien nodded.

”Perhaps he didn’t want the person after him to carry the wrong expectations.”

He continued reading.

”This sword is called Xiaoyao.”

”It followed me across mountains and rivers, through sects, across battlefields, and into places the world called forbidden lands.”

”I used it to cut down enemies.”

”And I also used it to cut away the things that bound my own heart.”

”If fate exists between you and this sword, you will see it for yourself.”

”If not, then even after practicing for a hundred years, you will still only be someone holding a sword and thrusting it forward.”

At those words, Hao Nhien unconsciously placed a hand on the sheath of the Xiaoyao Sword.

The sword remained completely still.

No response.

He was not disappointed.

Just as the senior had written, whether or not there was fate between them was not something Hao Nhien could simply declare for himself.

He turned to the next section.

”Understanding the Laws of Heaven and Earth contains things I once saw, once thought, and once misunderstood.”

”Do not treat it as truth.”

”If you completely believe another person’s insights, they will become your cage.”

”If you doubt them and then verify them for yourself, only then can they become stepping stones beneath your feet.”

Hao Nhien paused.

Unauthorized content usage: if you discover this narrative on Amazon, report the violation.

This sounded less like an inheritance—

and more like a warning.

He continued.

”I once reached Tribulation Transformation.”

”I stood within the Thanh Van Mountains for five hundred years, watching mountains and rivers change, seeking a doorway to Divine Transformation within the laws of heaven and earth.”

”But even when my lifespan neared its end, I remained one step short.”

”So do not imitate me by standing still for too long.”

”My Dao may not be your Dao.”

”If you wish to leave, then leave.”

”If you wish to stay, then stay.”

”But whatever you choose, never forget why you chose it.”

The writing ended there.

Hao Nhien turned the following page.

Blank.

He flipped through several more.

Still blank.

Tieu Lan stared.

”That’s the end?”

”Mm.”

She studied the empty pages for a long time.

Only after a while did she say softly,

”Maybe… the rest is meant for the person who comes after him to write?”

Hao Nhien looked at her.

A simple thought.

Yet somehow, it struck directly at the deepest part of the matter.

He nodded slightly.

”Perhaps.”

Hao Nhien closed the journal and picked up Understanding the Laws of Heaven and Earth.

This book was not a cultivation art.

Nor was it a combat secret technique.

The first pages contained only a few brief observations about cultivation realms.

Not long.

Not detailed.

It was as if the writer had merely raised several distant mountains into view, so that those who came after would understand how long the road was—

without telling them how to climb every step.

Hao Nhien skimmed the list.

Qi Condensation.

Foundation Establishment.

Golden Core.

Nascent Soul.

Void Transformation.

Tribulation Transformation.

Divine Transformation.

The names continued one after another.

Each seemed farther away than the last.

In Thanh Van Town, Uncle That at the sixth layer of Qi Condensation was already considered unusually strong.

In Quan Bach’s memories, a Golden Core cultivator was almost an existence standing high above ordinary people.

Yet in this book—

even Golden Core was merely another stretch of road.

Hao Nhien stopped at the final two words.

Divine Transformation.

The book contained only one short sentence.

”One who reaches Divine Transformation forms divine intent of their own, may turn a portion of their will into law, create secret realms, and borrow the power of heaven and earth to wield divine abilities.”

Hao Nhien read it again.

Turn will into law.

Create secret realms.

Borrow heaven and earth to wield divine abilities.

The image of the man in black robes edged with gold immediately appeared in his mind.

One wave of his hand.

The Blood Bats had been crushed.

One sentence.

The fate of Earth had been placed on the table like some cold, lifeless object.

Hao Nhien did not know whether that man had been at Divine Transformation—

or somewhere even higher.

But one thing he knew for certain.

The distance between himself and an existence like that was so vast he could barely imagine its end.

Tieu Lan noticed that he had been silent for too long.

”Young Master?”

Hao Nhien half closed the book.

”Tieu Lan.”

”Yes?”

”If one day I have to go very far…”

She looked at him.

”Farther than Thanh Van City.”

”Farther than anywhere you’ve ever heard of.”

Tieu Lan remained silent for a moment.

”Then what?”

”Would you be afraid?”

She did not answer immediately.

Her gaze lowered to the silver bracelet around her wrist.

Then to the books on the table.

Finally, she looked back at Hao Nhien.

”I’d still be afraid.”

It was a very honest answer.

”But if Young Master went alone, I’d be even more afraid.”

Hao Nhien fell silent.

Tieu Lan continued, her voice quieter.

”I don’t know what Divine Transformation is.”

”I don’t know how powerful Tribulation Transformation is either.”

”But I know Young Master is searching for something very important.”

Her fingers tightened slightly.

”Sometimes, when you look at the river, it feels like you’re looking at somewhere very far away.”

”When that happens… I feel that if I don’t follow you, then maybe one day you’ll disappear from my world.”

Something stirred sharply in Hao Nhien’s heart.

Tieu Lan herself seemed not to understand why she had said those words.

The moment she finished, she lowered her head.

”I was just saying nonsense. Young Master doesn’t need to pay attention.”

Hao Nhien looked at her for a long time.

For a moment, he nearly asked:

How do you know?

How can you feel that?

But the words stopped before leaving his mouth.

Some things, if asked too early, might only frighten them both.

He set the book down.

”I won’t disappear that easily.”

Tieu Lan looked up.

Her eyes were clear.

But firm.

”Young Master can take me as far as I’m able to go.”

”If one day I truly can’t keep up anymore…”

She paused.

”Then I’ll work harder until I can.”

Hao Nhien closed his eyes for a moment.

A few old memories drifted across his heart like faint waves.

Someone had once stood beside him.

Someone had once said they would walk with him.

Someone had once been taken away right in front of him.

He opened his eyes.

”All right.”

Tieu Lan looked at him.

”You promise?”

”Mm.”

Only one word.

But for Tieu Lan, it was enough.

She lowered her head and smiled softly.

Hao Nhien picked up Understanding the Laws of Heaven and Earth again and turned several more pages.

Most of what followed consisted of scattered observations about mountains, rivers, plants, life and death, and change.

Some he did not understand at all.

Some were simply too distant from him.

But one line made him stop.

”Law does not exist outside the myriad things.”

”Law is the way the myriad things repeat themselves.”

Hao Nhien stared at the sentence for a long time.

Then he closed the book.

”I shouldn’t study this one too deeply yet.”

Tieu Lan asked,

”Because it’s too difficult?”

”Mm.”

”Difficult.”

”And too far away.”

”Then leave it for later?”

”For later.”

Hao Nhien looked down at his hands.

”Right now, I still haven’t even mastered my three strikes and three steps.”

Tieu Lan smiled faintly.

”The senior is talking about heaven and earth, and Young Master is thinking about three strikes and three steps.”

”Because those are what can keep me alive right now.”

”That’s true.”

Hao Nhien set the book down.

His gaze moved to the final one.

Unfettered Sword Intent.

The book was very thin.

So thin that it seemed to contain only a few pages.

But the moment Hao Nhien’s hand touched the cover, a cool current immediately entered his meridians from his fingertips.

The Xiaoyao Sword beside him also trembled faintly.

Very faintly.

But Hao Nhien felt it.

Tieu Lan immediately sat straighter.

”Young Master?”

Hao Nhien did not open the book.

He looked at the Xiaoyao Sword.

Then at Unfettered Sword Intent.

A very clear feeling rose within him.

This book was different from the other two.

It was not something he could understand merely by opening it and reading.

Hao Nhien slowly withdrew his hand.

”Not yet.”

Tieu Lan looked surprised.

”Why?”

”The sword intent of a Tribulation Transformation expert.”

Hao Nhien said,

”I don’t know what’s inside.”

”Touching it carelessly may not be a good thing.”

At the words Tribulation Transformation, Tieu Lan immediately became serious.

”Then tomorrow?”

”Mm.”

”Tomorrow.”

Hao Nhien returned all three books to the storage ring.

Only the Xiaoyao Sword remained on the table for a little while longer.

He looked at the sword and spoke quietly.

”The senior left behind a sword.”

”But he didn’t leave behind a road already walked.”

Tieu Lan nodded.

”Then Young Master will walk your own.”

Hao Nhien looked at her and nodded.

”Mm.”

Inside the small boat cabin, the oil lamp burned low.

Outside, the Thanh Van River continued flowing through the night.

The pale blue storage ring in Hao Nhien’s hand no longer felt like a treasure chest.

It felt more like a door.

A door showing him that the road ahead was longer.

Higher.

And far more real than he had imagined.

Fortunately—

he was not standing before that door alone.

Hao Nhien blew out the oil lamp.

Darkness settled over the cabin.

The Xiaoyao Sword rested silently beside him.

And Unfettered Sword Intent remained inside the storage ring.

Still unopened.

Like a promise.

Tomorrow.

The next day, Hao Nhien did not go into the mountains.

Nor did he hurry to practice his fist art.

After breakfast, he sat alone in the rear cabin for a long time.

Before him rested the Xiaoyao Sword and the pale blue storage ring.

Sunlight entered through the small window and fell across the old sheath, making the cloud patterns carved into the hilt shift between light and shadow.

Tieu Lan did not disturb him.

She remained in the front cabin with the two medicinal books they had recently bought, occasionally writing notes with a charcoal stick on a piece of rough paper.

Only when the rear cabin remained quiet for too long did she glance toward the door with faint concern.

Hao Nhien knew she was paying attention.

But he did not call her in yet.

Yesterday, he had read the journal of One Sword Xiaoyao and skimmed through Understanding the Laws of Heaven and Earth.

Only a few pages of words—

yet they had made the road before him seem far broader.

And far more distant.

Sword intent left behind by someone like One Sword Xiaoyao was, to Hao Nhien as he was now, like a great river pouring toward a small cup.

If he became greedy—

the cup would break.

So he did not open Unfettered Sword Intent immediately.

He simply sat.

Breathed in.

Breathed out.

Waited for his mind to settle.

Waited for his curiosity to fade.

Waited for the desire to ”gain a powerful technique immediately” to rise—

and then dissolve on its own.

Only near noon did Hao Nhien finally open his eyes.

He stood and walked into the front cabin.

Tieu Lan immediately looked up.

”Young Master?”

”Come inside.”

She quickly set down the charcoal stick, brushed her hands clean, and followed him into the rear cabin.

Hao Nhien pointed to the seat opposite him.

”Sit there.”

”If anything strange happens to me, don’t touch me immediately.”

”Call my name first.”

”If I don’t respond, use the Clearheart Liquid on the point between my brows and my wrists.”

Tieu Lan’s expression immediately turned serious.

”Young Master… is that book very dangerous?”

”I don’t know.”

He answered honestly.

Tieu Lan pressed her lips together.

She clearly wanted to say more, but in the end she only took out the bottle of Clearheart Liquid and placed it within easy reach.

”I understand.”

”Be careful, Young Master.”

Hao Nhien nodded.

He took Unfettered Sword Intent from the storage ring.

The book was thin, its old leather cover a faded silver-gray.

When placed on the table, it was so light that it seemed almost weightless.

But the Xiaoyao Sword beside it trembled faintly.

Not as though it had been awakened.

More like someone hearing an old name carried to them by the wind.

Hao Nhien placed his hand on the cover.

A cool current flowed from his fingertips into his meridians.

Not strong.

But extraordinarily pure.

It moved through his palm.

Up his wrist.

Then stopped in his right arm.

In Hao Nhien’s perception, the spiritual qi within his meridians seemed to be drawn into something extremely thin.

Long.

Straight.

It had the shape of an idea.

A line.

A point.

A sword.

Hao Nhien breathed in slowly.

Then opened the first page.

Blank.

The pale yellow paper contained not a single word.

He turned to the second page.

Still blank.

The third.

Blank.

The entire book contained only a handful of thin pages—

yet there was not a single stroke of ink.

Tieu Lan sat opposite him, her expression shifting from tension to confusion.

”Young Master… there aren’t any words?”

”Mm.”

”Could they have disappeared?”

”Doesn’t look like it.”

Hao Nhien lightly touched the page.

No dust.

No erased marks.

No sign that anything had ever been written and faded away.

It looked as though the book had been blank from the beginning.

But if it truly was blank—

why had the Xiaoyao Sword trembled?

Hao Nhien sent a thread of spiritual qi into the page.

Nothing.

He tried spiritual sense.

Still nothing.

Then he pricked his fingertip with a small needle and let one drop of blood fall onto the corner of the page.

The drop rolled slightly across the paper.

Then stopped.

It did not soak in.

Tieu Lan watched while barely breathing.

After a while, the drop of blood was still only a drop of blood.

No light.

No hidden writing.

The cabin was so quiet that they could hear the river softly striking the wooden hull outside.

Tieu Lan blinked.

”Young Master… it seems the senior doesn’t accept blood.”

Hao Nhien looked at the drop.

Then at her.

For some reason, the seriousness of her words nearly made him laugh.

”Perhaps the senior doesn’t like that method.”

Tieu Lan lowered her head.

Her shoulders trembled slightly.

She was holding back laughter.

Hao Nhien exhaled.

”If you want to laugh, then laugh.”

Tieu Lan immediately shook her head.

”I wouldn’t dare.”

But the corners of her lips had already curled upward.

Hao Nhien wiped away the drop of blood.

Some of the tension inside him eased as well.

That small, ridiculous moment had loosened the atmosphere more than he expected.

He looked at the Xiaoyao Sword.

Spiritual qi had failed.

Blood had failed.

Spiritual sense had failed.

Then perhaps this book was never meant to be ”opened” in the ordinary way.

Sword intent.

If the book was called Unfettered Sword Intent, then the key might not be blood or spiritual qi alone.

It might be intent.

But where was Hao Nhien supposed to find sword intent?

He closed his eyes.

Within the meridians of his right arm, a faint trace of the cool current from earlier still remained.

He did not force it along the route of his breathing cultivation.

Nor did he guide it back toward his lower abdomen.

He only observed it.

The current was strange.

It did not feel like the qi he used with his fist art.

It did not feel like the qi he used during breathing cultivation.

It was thinner.

Straighter.

Colder.

And yet—

it had shape.

Direction.

A strange instinct within it.

An urge to move outward.

Hao Nhien paused.

What was this?

Spiritual qi taking the form of a sword?

Or merely a reaction caused by the Xiaoyao Sword and the book together?

He did not know.

But one thing he could sense clearly.

The faint sword-shaped presence within his meridian did not feel like ordinary qi.

It was more like an idea wrapped in spiritual energy.

A very simple idea.

Go.

Hao Nhien placed his right hand on the blank page.

Half doubtful and half amused, he tried reaching toward that faint sword shape with his mind.

”Come on.”

The moment the thought appeared, he paused.

For some reason, it felt strangely natural.

Almost intimate.

He silently added another line, as though calling a mischievous child who refused to come home.

”Come back to Father.”

Even Hao Nhien found the thought ridiculous.

But at that exact moment—

the faint Spirit Sword within his meridian suddenly moved.

Not because Hao Nhien forced the spiritual qi outward.

It moved as though it had heard him.

A thread of pale blue light shot from his right arm, burst from the center of his palm, and plunged straight into the blank page.

Hao Nhien froze.

Tieu Lan’s eyes widened.

”Young Master!”

The page erupted with light.

Not dazzling.

But deep.
