I'm Trapped in the Block

Chapter 314: Chapter 311: Changing Memories

’Fire Thief Studio?’

”What is she doing?”

Li Luo’s behavior left Mo Ling completely baffled.

The boat to the next destination was about to leave, but Li Luo was still sitting at the desk, doing nothing in particular.

She would occasionally fiddle with the small white object on the desk or straighten her clothes, seeming not at all in a hurry to catch the boat.

Lin Nian didn’t reappear, and Li Luo remained seated firmly at the desk for a long time.

Besides Li Luo, there was no one else here; the entire white, hemispherical building was empty.

Outside, people came and went. Some glanced curiously at the sign before walking away in confusion. It seemed no one knew what ”Fire Thief Studio” was for.

An electronic screen was slapped down on the desk in front of Li Luo.

”Aren’t you leaving?”

Mo Ling was confused. ’What is she doing just sitting here?’

A look of confusion crossed Li Luo’s face.

”Go where?” she asked, looking at the Block.

”To take the boat. To the next destination.”

Reading the words on the electronic screen, Li Luo’s expression grew even more confused.

”Why should I take a boat? Isn’t it nice here?”

’Not taking the boat?’

Mo Ling grew anxious and began to question her through the screen: ”If you don’t take the boat, how will you get to the end of the sea route? How will you get to the fourth level of the Abyss? How will you get to the Bottom of the Abyss?”

It was already getting late. Li Luo and Lin Nian had spent a long time eating and shopping. With noon fast approaching, he didn’t know if the boat to the next destination had already left or not.

Li Luo stared at the questions on the screen for a long time, her brow furrowed.

Seeing her expression, Mo Ling also realized that something was wrong.

Sure enough, a moment later, Li Luo looked at the Block again and asked a question that utterly shocked Mo Ling:

”Why would I want to go to the Bottom of the Abyss?”

At that moment, Mo Ling froze.

Mo Ling didn’t know the answer to that question either, but he knew the Li Luo of the past would never have asked it.

More than anyone, Li Luo wanted to go to the Bottom of the Abyss, for whatever reason.

Right now, something was definitely wrong with her.

’Could this Li Luo in front of me be a fake?’

Mo Ling quickly asked a few questions, all of which Li Luo answered without hesitation.

He then suspected that she had been distorted by something, so he took out the red bandana again. But even after putting it on, Li Luo still looked just as confused.

The Li Luo before him seemed perfectly normal. Aside from forgetting her goal of going to the Bottom of the Abyss, nothing had changed. There was no distortion, nor were there any other problems.

”What’s wrong with you? Why are you suddenly asking so many questions today?” Li Luo was also puzzled, seeing the Block’s intense reaction.

She was completely unaware of the change in herself.

Only after Mo Ling told her everything did a shocked expression appear on Li Luo’s face.

”I used to think that way? I wanted to go to the Bottom of the Abyss?”

She looked utterly incredulous.

”In my memory, I just wanted to come to Paradise Island, find a job, and live a good life. I know people on the island now, and I’m quite happy. Even though there are a lot of rules, the people are very friendly. I’m slowly getting used to the island’s rules and adapting to my new job...”

Li Luo murmured, telling Mo Ling what was on her mind.

”What new job?” Mo Ling asked hurriedly.

”A Fire Thief...”

Li Luo answered, a little confused, ”But I don’t know what my job is. I only know that I’m a Fire Thief. That’s my identity on the island. Work during the day, rest at night...”

The more she spoke, the more she felt her own logic was flawed, and her expression gradually grew solemn.

”I remember that I came up with the ’Fire Thief’ identity off the cuff when I first arrived on the island. If I really wanted to live a good life here, I should have registered properly instead of just making up an identity. Looking at it this way, there’s definitely a big problem.”

Lost in thought, Li Luo stood up and paced around the building a few times.

”This is my first time here, so it should feel strange. But I seem to subconsciously believe that this is where I’m supposed to be, and I don’t feel out of place at all. I’m very relaxed.”

Li Luo felt more and more that something was wrong. She turned back to the Block and asked,

”When did this change happen to me?”

Mo Ling also began to think back carefully.

’Was it after she came to this building? No, earlier, when Lin Nian was leading the way, if Li Luo had realized the route was wrong, she would have pointed it out long ago. But she didn’t raise any questions then.’

’Then it must have been before that, while they were buying clothes or eating breakfast.’

’Could there have been something wrong with the food?’

Mo Ling thought about it carefully. The Li Luo at that time didn’t seem to be in a hurry at all, as if she knew she didn’t need to take a boat. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have let Lin Nian drag her all over the place.

’Even earlier?’

’Last night!’

’It must have been last night. Something definitely happened while she was asleep to cause her current change.’

’Before checking into the inn, Li Luo still remembered about taking the boat, but by morning, she wasn’t in a hurry at all. Something must have happened last night.’

Mo Ling told Li Luo his suspicions.

”Last night?”

Li Luo thought for a moment before replying, ”I only remember sleeping very deeply last night. It was like I had just fallen asleep and it was morning in an instant. All my fatigue was completely gone.”

”Do you remember, before you checked into the inn, Lin Nian said she would take you to the boat the next morning?” Mo Ling pressed.

”I don’t remember that.”

Li Luo shook her head. ”I only remember her saying she would take me to work the next morning.”

She also began to recall the details. ”Other than that, she doesn’t seem to have told me anything about the job, but after coming here, I was able to get into my work with great familiarity...”

Suddenly, Li Luo seemed to have thought of something.

”I think I know how to tell if these memories are fake. You’re not in any of these false memories!”

Li Luo looked at the Block and said seriously.

Then, she reached up and patted her head. ”But even though I realize something is wrong now, I can’t recall the correct memories.”

Mo Ling watched Li Luo’s conflicted expression, feeling just as helpless.

It seemed to be a very crude form of memory tampering. A small reminder was enough to reveal the logical flaws, but even after discovering the tampering, the original memories couldn’t be recovered.

Li Luo was now caught in this very conflict.

Mo Ling could only control the Block to descend and gently bump against Li Luo, rousing her from her daze.

After that, Li Luo no longer dwelled on her jumbled memories, and her gaze slowly firmed with resolve.

”Thank you. If it weren’t for you, I would still be immersed in these false memories.”

She patted the Block and said earnestly.

”But this is fine too. Since this island wants to keep us here, let’s just turn it upside down and see what secrets it’s really hiding.”
