My Sister Insisted on Swapping Marriages, and I Became a Marchioness Instead

Chapter 121: Chapter 121: Better Ask the Sixth Madam

Nanny Rong praised after hearing, ”That Doctor Li is truly skilled. The medicated balm used by the Marquis for his injuries is of the finest quality, now there’s no need to worry about the Marchioness leaving a scar on her face.”

Qin Yuan asked, ”Would it be better if the soldiers under the Marquis used Doctor Li’s medicine?”

Nanny Rong pondered, ”That’s true. If there were less bloodshed on the battlefield, people would recover sooner, which could save many lives. But...”

She didn’t finish her sentence.

Qin Yuan understood that the matter was not that simple.

Nanny Rong sat for a while before leaving.

This left Qin Yuan with a complex expression, staring at the Jade Beauty Cream, knowing it was precious but not realizing it was so valuable.

”Cui Ming...”

She called out, then remembered Cui Ming was still resting, and Hong Ye had gone out to check on the ice basin.

The housekeepers knew she was startled yesterday and, since there was nothing pressing, didn’t come for attendance.

Qin Yuan called for a young maid, wrote a few lines, and said, ”Take this to the accountant of the residence for bookkeeping, saying it was yesterday’s expense at Renhe Hall.”

The Jade Beauty Cream was so valuable, it couldn’t be taken for nothing.

The cost of medicine and consultations for each household was covered by public funds, so this bill should naturally be charged to the public accounts. Last time, when Marquis Gu was beaten, the cost of the ointment was quietly covered by Wutong Garden’s private funds.

Though not much, Qin Yuan felt it was somewhat unjust.

Nanny Rong went back to the main room and exclaimed, ”Old Madam, I really think the Marchioness is blessed.”

”How so?”

Old Madam Gu inquired with concern.

Brother Cheng and Sister Yu, sitting nearby, also looked over.

Nanny Rong said, ”The Marquis is blessed to have married her—she always thinks of him.”

”What exactly happened?”

Old Madam Gu couldn’t stand Nanny Rong’s suspense anymore.

Qiujie and Xiao Hong also looked over.

Nanny Rong said, ”I just went to see the Marchioness. She’s fine now. But speaking of the ointment she used, Old Madam, can you guess what it is?”

Old Madam Gu said, not in the best mood, ”Surely it can’t be Jade Beauty Cream.”

Later, she would have to think of a way to ask for medicine in the palace.

Though she felt her son was making a fuss, if her daughter-in-law’s face was marred, it would indeed be a pity.

Nanny Rong slapped her thigh and said, ”You’ve hit the nail on the head, Old Madam. It’s indeed Jade Beauty Cream, and not just a little bit—it’s a whole jar.”

Although the jar wasn’t very large,

but it was indeed a full jar.

Nanny Rong gestured to show its size.

Old Madam Gu stood up excitedly and asked, ”Did you see it with your own eyes?”

Nanny Rong hurriedly supported her, saying, ”Of course. They said it was given by a doctor from Renhe Hall that she frequently visited. It was their treasure, which hadn’t been sold, so she used it. My goodness, others would go through so much trouble just to get Jade Beauty Cream, yet she simply stretched out her hand and obtained it.”

”Now there’s no need to go to the palace to ask Empress Lin,” Old Madam Gu felt relieved, then exclaimed again, ”A doctor from Renhe Hall? Renhe Hall?”

Renhe Hall was not well-known in the Capital City, neither prominent nor obscure, truly serendipitous for them to encounter it.

Nanny Rong quietly added, ”The Marchioness said the ointment the Marquis used from Renhe Hall last time was better than the regular remedies used in the military for injuries. She even suggested buying some more for the Marquis. You see, whenever the Marchioness does something, she thinks of the Marquis—isn’t that the Marquis’s blessing?”

Old Madam Gu patted Nanny Rong’s hand and sighed, ”It is a blessing, truly a blessing. Even the incense pills she brought—I used them and had such a great sleep and felt much more at ease, more effective than medicine. If it were a young lady from another residence, possessing such a skill, she couldn’t resist showing off to gain fame, yet she remains so humble.”

Nanny Rong continued, ”That’s not all. Last time, I shared some incense pills with those old friends of mine, and each one praised them. They all inquired about where to purchase them, and when I said they were made by our Marchioness, they fell silent. Who else could have the privilege of the Marchioness personally crafting incense pills? Even getting to use them once is a blessing.”

Old Madam Gu couldn’t help but laugh.

Brother Cheng listened enviously to their conversation.

Sister Yu was also a bit curious.

Nanny Rong added, ”Old Madam, you know my son-in-law, he has always prided himself on his skills in fragrance blending. After examining my incense pills, he remarked that although the ingredients used by the Marchioness are commonly found in the market, the results and scent of her incense pills are exceptional. He even wondered if the Marchioness would consider making some for sale at Ranxiang Inn.”

Old Madam Gu said, ”It depends on whether Yuan’er is willing or not.”

Preparing fragrances for family is one thing, but if sold, it would require considerable effort.

As Nanny Rong mentioned, who else has such standing to request the Marchioness to craft incense pills for them?

The Dingbei Marquis Mansion isn’t short of money.

Nanny Rong replied, ”I thought if the Marchioness is willing, she could teach some people or invest with the incense formula. But she was startled yesterday, so I didn’t mention it.”

Old Madam Gu said, ”You should ask her when you have time. Isn’t she worrying about her dowry shop? Speaking of which, her dowry is indeed somewhat modest, and we need to find ways to supplement it.”

Nanny Rong nodded, ”The Marchioness said she slept upon returning yesterday and was too hungry in the morning to come for breakfast. She’ll be here tomorrow.”

Old Madam Gu couldn’t help but laugh heartily.

The accountant received the note sent by Qin Yuan’s messenger. Startled by the amount, he saw that the consultation and medicine fees for the Marchioness amounted to 600 taels of silver. He dared not ignore it but was also hesitant to record it just like that.

”How did the Marchioness incur such an expense at Renhe Hall?”

The young maid replied, ”The Marchioness injured her face, and Renhe Hall provided their treasured ointment, so it must be expensive.”

Sun Accountant, thin and scraggly with mouse-like whiskers and a long neck, swallowed with difficulty and said, ”Renhe Hall isn’t very well-known...”

The young maid asked, ”So will you record this bill or not?”

Sun Accountant hesitated, ”This might need to be approved by the Sixth Madam.”

The young maid coldly laughed, ”Listen to yourself. Does that make any sense? The Marchioness was startled and injured her face, using the treasured ointment from Renhe Hall, which comes to merely 600 taels of silver. Yet you say it needs the Sixth Madam’s approval before it can be billed. Is it that the Marchioness’s face isn’t precious enough or what?”

Sun Accountant: ”...Do you think 600 taels is just six taels?”

The young maid threw the note onto Sun Accountant’s desk angrily, ”I’ve given you the note. Issue me a receipt—whether you record it or not isn’t my concern; I’m only doing what the Marchioness instructed.”

Sun Accountant also grew angry, his Adam’s apple bobbing, making his neck appear even longer: ”You’ve just started serving the Marchioness, and already you look down on others.”

The young maid, being a native of the mansion and recently spending time with Hong Ye and Cui Ming, had gained confidence. She straightforwardly questioned, ”Just answer if you are accepting this note or not. If not, I’ll take it back to the Marchioness. If you accept, give me a receipt, and someone will come to settle it in a few days. Not to be rude, but we all know each other here; many others in this residence spare no expense with silver, yet when it comes to the Marchioness, you suddenly become stingy.”

Sun Accountant, left red-faced by the scolding, was close to being openly questioned about whom he truly recognized as the master.
