I Learned Magic for All the Wrong Reasons

Chapter 53: Chapter 53: Honey Brought Her Own Qualifications

Professor Bell carried the photographs to a workroom before Honey could explain forbidden equipment to everyone waiting for a visitor badge. Dante followed with her case, pleased to have been trusted with something that looked expensive and potentially illegal.

The case contained three jars, folded gloves and a sandwich wrapped in gold paper. Honey removed the sandwich first and told him not to confuse good presentation with danger.

”The last thing that looked harmless tried to bite me,” Dante said, remembering Jett’s breakfast.

”Then your judgment needs work,” she replied. ”This one has been dead since lunch.”

Professor Bell asked to see the source labels. Honey supplied them with the air of a woman producing evidence of her own birth after someone questioned whether she existed. The professor photographed every label before opening a jar.

Dante liked that she looked offended and prepared at the same time. Her gold glasses had slipped slightly, and a loose strand of hair rested against her cheek. He wanted to move it, which would have been a bold opening move for someone carrying her lunch.

She took the case from him before he could attempt diplomacy with his fingers. ”You can admire the materials after we establish that you won’t eat them.”

”I wasn’t looking at the materials,” he admitted, and her antennae lifted before she became deeply interested in her gloves.

Professor Bell set a small glass dish on a marked mat. A separate teaching cell supplied its power through a visible strip that glowed blue when connected. He explained the arrangement before allowing Honey to touch it.

”The cell supplies the charge,” he said. ”We will measure what enters and what remains. Dante will observe, and nobody will offer blood because a diagram looked exciting.”

Dante kept both bandaged hands on his notebook. History would describe this as his period of strategic patience, assuming history didn’t interview the professor.

Honey spread a thin layer of pale honey inside the dish. It looked ordinary until Professor Bell connected the cell and little golden squares appeared across its surface. Each square brightened in turn, making a pattern he could follow without guessing.

When the professor removed the strip, the squares stayed lit. Honey placed a tiny practice lamp beside the dish and connected it instead. Its light lasted several seconds before both lamp and honey went dark.

”It kept some,” Dante said, checking the numbers. ”It didn’t keep making more.”

Honey looked pleased enough to be irritating. ”An excellent discovery for a man who was staring at my mouth.”

”You were explaining the demonstration,” he replied, while Professor Bell wrote the result as if this were a normal scientific exchange.

They repeated the process with an untreated dish. Its light vanished almost immediately after the supply was removed. Dante drew the two results beside each other, then asked whether the honey could make the cube safe.

Professor Bell put one finger on the missing part of the photograph. ”Holding a little power may help us build a limited model. It doesn’t tell us what this missing piece controlled.”

”The caption says sources,” Dante pointed out.

”It does, and it also refers to another page we don’t have. A word gives us a question. It doesn’t give us the whole machine.”

Dante disliked machines that required whole answers. His imagination had already designed a version that floated, glowed and obeyed quiet commands. It had not included a separate instruction book, because nothing ruined an entrance like checking page forty.

Honey produced a close photograph of the torn edge. The cut crossed a handwritten note as well as the printed drawing. Someone had removed the part after the book was made, which meant the empty space was a choice rather than a printing mistake.

Dante compared the cut with the correction beneath the cube. ”Could the person who crossed this out have removed the control?”

Honey took the photograph back and enlarged it. Different ink colors showed around the two marks, though she warned that age and lighting could change their appearance. Dante wrote possible instead of certain, then underlined it so his future self couldn’t pretend he had meant something else.

Anika arrived after her appointment with a campus map and a message for Professor Bell. She had asked the archive to search for the missing reference, and its first match appeared in records held at a regional weather station.

”The field course has permission to inspect that collection next month,” she said. ”I’ve asked whether we can submit a question in advance.”

Dante imagined a journey through storms to claim his stolen birthright. Anika spoiled it by adding that the course had a bus, packed lunches and attendance requirements.

”Every expedition needs discipline,” he said, and she glanced at his notebook.

”Yours could start with writing down the departure date correctly. That’s the library return date.”

Professor Bell kept the demonstration materials in the workroom, with Honey’s permission, and sent the result to the nurse reviewing the earlier readings. Dante received photographs and an unpowered diagram to study. No cube had been made, although he felt personally advanced by standing near the correct jars.

On their way out, a group of students passed carrying blue-and-white ribbons. One offered Anika a card for the Sigma Kappa Mu game-week fundraiser, then asked whether Honey would be joining them.

”She’s visiting,” Anika said before Honey could announce a rank. ”And he already bought tickets, so don’t sell him another four.”

The student looked Dante over and smiled. ”Bring your friends to the house afterward. We need someone tall enough to fix the entrance banner.”

Dante accepted the card with the calm of a man being recruited for influence rather than basic reach. Honey read it over his arm, close enough for one wing to brush his sleeve.

”They should have asked me,” she said. ”I can fly.”

”Perhaps they recognized my command presence,” he replied, and Anika took the card before he could put that on the attendance form.

Before they left the corridor, Dante asked Anika whether she wanted the photographs for her research folder. She held out her phone rather than asking him to forward everything later. They labeled the images together, and he noticed that she kept the failed comparison as carefully as the successful one. He saved both too, deciding that a proper arsenal included proof of what did not work.

His phone chimed as they reached the stairs. The archive had found a short entry under the missing reference, and Anika opened the attached image for him.

It listed the cube beneath a heading for external spell anchors. Beneath that, in smaller writing, a warning named three required checks: stored charge, active supply and an open connection to living tissue.
