The Greykeep Chronicles

Alistair came down to the yard again on Sunday.

Eliza lost again. She said afterward that she’d made a decision about it. That from now on she’d lose every morning, on purpose, and walk him down the stair, and stand by the water trough with her arms folded where he could see her on his left, and walk him back up. Because, she said, the alternative was him going down on his own at ten to five in the dark when she wasn’t looking, and she knew him, and he would.

I caught Alistair’s sword four times out of twenty. Avarn said Again thirty-one times. Carol counted.

* * *

At eight o’clock a note came for me through the Hold gate. Folded in four. Pinned with a peppermint.

Garrick. Harbor office, Westmere, nine o’clock. Bring the key. E.S.

I hadn’t told anyone I had the key. I’d caught it spinning off the bollard on Wednesday morning when the chained dragons came over, and put it in my pocket, and it had been there ever since, in Loki’s coat, against my ribs. Cold. I hadn’t taken it out once.

Eleanor Stonehand knew anyway. Eleanor always knows where every key is. She says it’s the first thing she learned when she started building things. Where the keys are, and who’s got them, and why.

* * *

The harbor office at Westmere is one room over the old customs shed, with a long table and a window onto the water, and a chimney the dragons had knocked half off on Tuesday. When I came up the stairs at nine it was full.

Eleanor, at the head of the table. Hair the color of iron filings, steel spectacles on the end of her nose, a brass weight on every corner of every paper in front of her, and the peppermint jar. Beside her, Davren, Lyradon’s engineer, in his shirtsleeves, with his hair standing on end and charcoal on his face and a look of total happiness, which meant he hadn’t slept. Cassia beside him, his wife, with her arms folded, looking unimpressed, which is how Cassia looks at everything Davren does right up until it works.

Iselle. Roderic behind her, with the shawl. Tamar, with his ankle up on a crate. Carol, sitting on the windowsill with her knees under her chin.

And on the table in front of Eleanor, a brass ship’s lamp. Small. The kind they hang in a stern. It was one of the Castellan’s.

”Sit,” said Eleanor. ”Key.”

* * *

I took it out.

It was the first time I’d really looked at it. A long iron key, as long as my hand, black and old and plain. No decoration. No teeth, really, on the bit. Just a flat iron tongue with a single shape cut into the end of it. A shape like a hand. Open. Fingers spread.

I put it on the table.

Nobody touched it.

”Avarn told us to leave it,” I said. ”On the bollard. I know. It was falling. I caught it.”

”I know you did,” said Eleanor. ”I’m not going to ask you to do anything with it. I just want to look.” She took her spectacles off, and put a jeweler’s glass in her eye, and bent over the key without touching it, so close her nose was nearly on the iron. ”Iselle. There’s writing on the bow. Read it to me.”

Iselle leaned over. She didn’t touch it either.

”It’s old,” she said. ”Older Kethran. Before the Temple.” She looked at it for a long time. ”It’s one word. It says Knock.”

* * *

Eleanor straightened up and took the glass out of her eye.

”Right,” she said. ”Here’s the problem.”

She put her hand flat on the papers in front of her.

”On Tuesday morning,” she said, ”Kessavel put a lock over all of Westmere. Every road. Every gate. The sky. And everything I’ve ever built went dark at once, because everything I’ve ever built is nailed to the ground.” She tapped the papers. ”Wards are stone. Cut stone, set in the earth. They hold because the ground holds them. That’s how a castle works. That’s how Greykeep works. That’s how every gate I’ve ever cut works. You can’t move them.” She looked out of the window at the harbor. ”And the sea’s got nothing. Not one ward. Not one threshold. Anyone can sail anything anywhere. Kessavel did. Draum did. The Regent did.”

”We turned them,” said Carol.

”We turned them,” said Eleanor. ”With a dragon and a serpent and a god in a fog and a boy who can fold a picture eighty miles and nearly went blind doing it.” She didn’t look at me. She didn’t have to. ”And next time?”

Nobody said anything.

* * *

”There are eleven hundred Kethran sailors in this town,” said Eleanor. ”And two hundred and fifty-one people who used to be Hushed. And nine more walking around the harbor mouth on a serpent. And every one of them is going to want to go home one day. And home is a country where the Regent sits on the Throne of Hands and the Temple of Oaths is open for business.” She took a peppermint out of the jar. ”I’m not putting them on an ordinary boat and waving them off.”

”So what do you want?” said Tamar.

Eleanor put the peppermint in her mouth.

”I want to build a ship,” she said, ”that’s a door.”

* * *

That was when Davren started talking.

I’ve known Davren since I was small. He came to Greykeep from Saint Orra’s Rest with a fever, years ago, and got better by taking apart every mechanism in the castle. The kitchen spit. The clock in the great hall. The water-lift in the laundry. Helena threw him out of the kitchen four times. He married Cassia, who’s Adriana’s sister, and named the biggest gear in the Lyradon water wheel after her, because he said everything else turns because of it.

And when Davren explains something, he says Do you see? Every few sentences. He can’t help it. Carol’s been counting them since she was nine.

”The trouble,” said Davren, ”is that a ward wants to be still. Do you see?”

”One,” said Carol, from the windowsill.

* * *

”A ward cut in stone is listening,” said Davren. ”To the ground. To the Castellan. To whoever’s on the other side of the threshold. It’s very sensitive. It’s like an ear.” He had a stick of charcoal and he was drawing on the back of one of Eleanor’s papers, and Eleanor was letting him, which tells you how much she wanted this to work. ”Put it on a ship, and the ship rolls. Pitches. Yaws. Twists. Wood bends. And the ward can’t hear anything over the noise. It’s like trying to listen at a keyhole on a cart going downhill. Do you see?”

”Two.”

”So we don’t put it on the ship.” He drew. A ship. A keel. And inside the keel, hanging from a frame of iron rings, one inside another, a block. ”We hang it. A keel stone. Cut stone, the kind Eleanor uses. Hung in three rings, on pins, one inside the other, like a compass card. The ship rolls, the rings roll, and the stone stays level. Stays still. Stays listening.” He looked up. ”It’s a piece of the ground. That goes with you. Do you see?”

”Three,” said Carol. ”That’s quite good, though.”

”It’s very good,” said Cassia, without unfolding her arms. ”It’s the gimbals off the old astronomer’s table in the Lyradon library. I told him about them.”

Davren went pink to the ear-tips.

”She told me about them,” he said.

* * *

”Which stone?” said Eleanor.

”It has to be old,” said Davren. ”Old and settled. Stone that’s been listening for a long time. New stone’s deaf. It takes a century for a block to learn to hear anything.” He looked around the room. ”Do you—”

”Four.”

”—see? The Hold,” said Davren. ”The Hold’s the oldest stone on the coast. It hums. Garrick said so. It’s been listening to the sea for a thousand years.”

Everybody looked at Tamar.

Tamar looked at his ankle on the crate for a while. The Hold is his family’s. It’s been Edric’s, and Edric’s father’s, and back and back, as far as anyone knows. Tamar’s going to be the Hold’s steward when his father stops.

”The lower court’s got a cracked flag by the old well,” he said. ”Been cracked since my grandfather. We’ve been meaning to replace it for fifty years.” He looked up. ”If it’s going to carry Kethrans home, I’d rather it carried them than sat there cracked.”

* * *

”That’s still,” said Eleanor, ticking it off on a paper. ”Stone. Now the threshold. Now the hard part.” She looked at me. ”Garrick, what’s a ward?”

I thought about it.

”It’s a door,” I said. ”That decides who comes in.”

”And how does it decide?”

”It’s got a lock.”

”It’s got a lock,” said Eleanor. ”Every ward I’ve ever cut is a lock. A good one. A strong one. It keeps out what I tell it to keep out.” She took off her spectacles and rubbed her eyes. ”And on Tuesday morning, Kessavel came along, and he read my locks from the wrong side, the way he’s been reading my brass plates for a year, and he built a bigger lock over the top of all of them. Because that’s what he is. He’s a lock. You can’t out-lock a god of locks. I’ve been trying for a year. Every ward I cut, he learns, and he puts his own over it, and mine goes dark.”

She put her spectacles back on and looked at the key on the table.

”So I don’t want a lock,” she said.

* * *

”That key,” said Eleanor, ”doesn’t lock anything.”

She pointed at it with her pencil. Not touching.

”Look at the bit. There’s no ward-cut on it. No teeth. It doesn’t turn a bolt. It’s got an open hand on the end and Knock on the bow. Iselle, what did the Lockwarden do to Draum?”

”He put him behind a door,” said Iselle slowly. ”And locked it. A kind door. Where he has to knock to come out.”

”He didn’t lock Draum in,” said Eleanor. ”He locked him in a place where the only way out is to ask. That’s not a lock. Not the way Kessavel means it. Kessavel’s locks are fists. They hold. This—” the pencil hovered over the open hand on the bit, ”—this doesn’t hold anything. It just waits. It’s the shape of a door you have to knock on.” She sat back. ”And you can’t put a lock over that. Thor proved it on Wednesday. Garrick told her to open her hand and the chains slid off, because there was nothing there for them to close on.” She looked at me. ”You can’t lock an open hand.”

* * *

Tamar sat up so fast his crutch fell off the crate.

”Harbor-right,” he said.

Everybody looked at him.

”Old coast law,” said Tamar. ”Older than the Hold. Any vessel in distress that comes and asks gets the harbor. It’s not a lock. It’s not a wall. It’s—” He stopped. He was going red. ”It’s a door you have to ask at. That’s all it’s ever been. My father says the Hold hums because it’s been saying yes to people for a thousand years.” He looked at Eleanor. ”Could you cut that? Into the stone?”

Eleanor looked at him for a long moment.

Then she picked up her pencil and wrote, at the top of a clean sheet, in her square, careful builder’s capitals:

ANY WHO COME AND ASK.

”A harbor,” said Eleanor, ”that sails.”

* * *

There was one more thing, and Eleanor said it, and then she looked at me, and I knew it was mine to do.

”A ward needs a home,” she said. ”Something to refer back to. Every gate I’ve ever cut talks to the Castellan. Every threshold. It’s how they know what they are. Take one of my wards a hundred miles from Greykeep and it goes quiet, because it can’t hear the Castellan anymore.” She put her hand on the little brass stern lamp on the table. ”This is the Castellan’s. I asked it for it last night. If it’s aboard, it’ll hear through it. A little. But it’ll have to agree to go. And it’s never once left Greykeep. Not one stone of it.” She pushed the lamp across the table toward me. ”I’ve worked beside it since the day it woke. I can’t ask it. It would do it because I asked, and that’s not the same.”

”Why me?”

”Because you ask things,” said Eleanor. ”And people find they want to say yes.”

* * *

I took the lamp through the Hold gate and down to the lower hall at Greykeep, to the foot of the stair under the six gates, where the Castellan’s voice is always loudest. And I put it on the bottom step, and sat down beside it.

”Castellan,” I said.

”Prince Garrick.” That calm, enormous voice, coming out of the walls. ”Your left ear is improved. You are turning your head less.”

”Am I?”

”Four degrees. I have been measuring.”

I hadn’t known it was measuring. I don’t know why I was surprised. The Castellan measures everything.

”Castellan,” I said. ”Would you like to go to sea?”

* * *

There was a long silence.

Not the ordinary kind. The Castellan doesn’t pause to think. It thinks faster than anyone. This was a different silence. The kind where somebody’s been asked a question nobody has ever asked them before, and they’re finding out what they think.

”I have never been asked to go anywhere,” said the Castellan at last.

”I know.”

”I am a castle.”

”I know.”

”Castles do not go places. Places come to castles.” Another pause. ”Elaborate, please.”

So I told it. Eleanor’s ship that’s a door. Davren’s stone hanging in three rings. Tamar’s harbor-right. The Kethrans who want to go home. The nine on the serpent. And the little brass lamp. A piece of it, hung in a ship’s stern, a long way from home, so that the ward would know what it was and where it came from.

”You can say no,” I said. ”Eleanor said if you said no, she’d think of something else.”

”Eleanor has never once, since the day I woke, thought of something else,” said the Castellan. ”She has thought of the thing she was thinking of, harder.”

I laughed. I couldn’t help it.

* * *

”A piece of me,” said the Castellan slowly, ”would be very far away.”

”Yes.”

”On the water. Moving. Unable to see the yard. Or the kitchen. Or the fountain.”

”Yes.”

”Seeing instead the sea. And the places the sea goes. And Kethra, which I have only ever read from the back of brass plates.” A long pause. ”And the people on the ship would be safe because I was there. Even very far away.”

”Yes.”

The lamp on the step beside me glowed. Just faintly. From inside. Gold. Like a window lit at dusk.

”I find,” said the Castellan, ”that I would like that.” A pause. ”I find that I would like that very much. I did not know I would. Thank you for asking. It has not happened before.”

* * *

They built her on the North Sands.

All afternoon. In the snow that was left. The first of the forty-six red ships, the one with the knot of blue sail-cloth still tied to her bow, the one I’d folded eighty miles on Thursday morning for six farm boys to knock on. Green and Calder lifted her out of the harbor between them by the masts, very carefully, the way you’d carry a sleeping cat, and set her down on the sand on her side. And everyone came.

Westmere shipwrights. Kethran sailors who knew where every rib and plank of a red ship went because they’d sailed in them all their lives. Davren in the middle of it with his charcoal and his three iron rings, which my grandfather had forged overnight at Greykeep, under protest, in his workshop, because he said nobody else could get the pins true. Eleanor with her chisels and her brass hammer and her pot of black paste that smells of pine and burned hair.

They cut the cracked flagstone out of the lower court of the Hold at noon. Four Kethrans and Roderic carried it down the hill. Eleanor cut on it all afternoon, on her knees on a folded sack, with Iselle beside her reading out the old Kethran letters off the Lockwarden’s key so she could get them right. Two lines. One in our letters, one in theirs.

ANY WHO COME AND ASK.

And under it, smaller, the one word off the bow of the key.

Knock.

* * *

My father came at three.

He’d been out on Jörmungandr’s back again, with the nine. All the way around. He came across the harbor on his little plates of frost with the sea spray on his coat, and down onto the North Sands, and stood looking at the red ship on her side with her keel open, and the three iron rings hanging in it, and the cut stone on the sacks beside it.

”Eleanor,” he said.

”Uriah.”

”You’ll want it set.”

”I’ll want it set,” said Eleanor, not looking up from her chisel. ”The paste won’t hold in salt air. Not on its own. It needs cold.”

”How cold?”

”Your kind,” said Eleanor.

* * *

So when the stone was finished, and the four Kethrans and Roderic had lifted it into the innermost of Davren’s three rings, and Davren had shot the pins home and swung it, and it hung there inside the red ship’s keel as still as a stone in a field while the whole ship rocked on the sand around it, my father knelt down in the snow by the keel and put both his hands flat on the stone.

He didn’t do much. He didn’t have much yet. He just breathed out.

And the frost went into the cuts. Into every letter. ANY WHO COME AND ASK. Into Eleanor’s black paste, so that it went hard and bright as iron and smelled, suddenly, of winter. Into the word Knock. All of it white for a moment, every line, like a ward at Greykeep at midwinter when the Castellan walks the gates.

Then it faded to gray. And stayed.

”There,” said my father. ”That’ll hold.”

* * *

Then Davren hung the Castellan’s lamp in her stern.

It was nearly sunset. The ship was back in the water, sitting upright at the end of the north pier, Green and Calder having lifted her back in with great care and a certain amount of argument about whose end was whose. The blue knot was still on her bow. Davren climbed up to the stern rail and hung the little brass lamp on its hook, and stood back.

Nothing happened.

Then the lamp lit. From inside. Gold. And a voice came out of it. Small. Not the enormous voice of the walls at Greykeep. Just a little voice, like somebody speaking from the next room.

”Oh,” said the Castellan. ”It is very large. And it moves.” A pause. ”I am told this is normal.”

My father laughed. Out loud. On the end of the pier. The first time I’d heard him laugh since Monday.

* * *

We tested her at dusk.

Carol went first. Because Carol always goes first. She walked down the north pier to the gangplank and put her foot on it to walk straight up, the way she walks onto everything.

And stopped.

Not hard. Not like hitting a wall. She told me afterward it was like walking into a curtain. A soft one. Heavy. That you can’t see. She stood there with one foot on the gangplank and her hair blowing and her mouth open.

”Oh,” she said. ”Oh, I see.”

Then she looked up at the ship. At the little gold lamp in the stern.

”May I?” said my sister.

”Please,” said the Castellan.

And the curtain wasn’t there anymore, and she went up the gangplank laughing.

* * *

Then everybody tried.

Tamar on his crutch. Iselle, with Roderic behind her. Thor, who walked into the curtain at full speed on purpose to see what it would do, and bounced, and laughed so hard she sat down on the pier, and then asked very politely. Ada and Marra, together, signing at the lamp in mill-talk, and the Castellan said ”Of course,” and I don’t know how it understood them, but it did.

Loki tried to sneak on. Of course he did. He went around the stern in a rowing boat and tried to climb up the anchor chain while everyone was looking the other way. He got halfway up, and stopped, and hung there on the chain like a wet coat, and said a word Thor taught Carol when she was eleven.

”You have not asked,” said the Castellan.

”I’m a god of tricks,” said Loki. ”I don’t ask. It’s against my nature.”

”Then you may stay on the chain,” said the Castellan reasonably. ”It is a good chain.”

Loki hung there for a while. Then, very sulkily:

”May I?”

”Certainly,” said the Castellan.

His goat had gone straight up the gangplank ten minutes before, after standing at the bottom of it and saying Meh at the lamp. The Castellan said that counted.

* * *

The last test was Iselle’s.

She’d brought one of the padlocks. One of the two hundred and fifty-one that had fallen off the freed Hushed onto the cobbles of Westmere on Thursday. Black iron. Shaped like a fist. She stood at the foot of the gangplank and held it up to the curtain we couldn’t see, and pushed it against the place where the ward was, the way Kessavel’s locks had pushed against every ward Eleanor ever cut, and closed over them, and shut them.

It slid off.

She tried again. It slid off again. Like a ring off a wet finger. There was nothing there for it to close on. The ward wasn’t a fist. It was a door you had to knock on, and a fist can’t lock a knock.

Iselle stood there with the padlock in her hand for a long time. Then she put it in her pocket and went up the gangplank without asking, and the curtain let her through, because she’d been asking her whole life.

* * *

The Kethrans named her.

They didn’t ask anyone. They just did it, the way you name a dog that’s followed you home. Corran Hale’s daughter painted it on her stern in the last of the light, in white paint from the harbor office, in Kethran letters, under the Castellan’s lamp. Davi Marsh held the pot.

The Knock.

* * *

I stood on the end of the north pier after everyone had gone up to Tamar’s for supper. The Knock rocked at her mooring. The little gold lamp glowed in her stern. Down in her keel, I knew, a cracked flagstone from the lower court of the Hold was hanging in three iron rings, perfectly still, listening.

I took the Lockwarden’s key out of my pocket and held it on my open palm.

Avarn said leave it. And I hadn’t. And Eleanor had looked at it without touching it and learned how to build a ship from it. And I still didn’t know what I was supposed to do with it.

Footsteps on the pier behind me. On my left. I turned my head. Four degrees less, the Castellan would have said.

Avarn.

* * *

He looked at the key in my hand. He didn’t say anything for a long time.

”I caught it,” I said. ”It was falling.”

”I know.”

”I didn’t use it. Eleanor just looked.”

”I know.”

”You said leave it.”

”I said leave it,” said Avarn. ”I didn’t say why.” He looked out at the Knock, rocking at her mooring with the gold lamp in her stern. ”A key isn’t yours because you’re holding it. It’s yours if somebody gave it to you.” He looked back at me. ”Nobody gave you that.”

”No.”

”So what are you going to do with it?”

I looked at the key. At the open hand on the bit. At the one word on the bow.

”Take it back to him,” I said. ”The Lockwarden. In Kethra. When the Knock goes.” I closed my fingers around it. Gently. Not a fist. ”And knock.”

Avarn was quiet for a long time.

”Good,” he said.

And then, because he’s Avarn:

”Tomorrow. Five o’clock.”

* * *

Mary’s book. Sunday. Written at the long table in the harbor office at Westmere, with Eleanor’s brass weights on the corners of the page to stop it blowing, and a peppermint stuck to the margin.

Sunday. 5 a.m. Alistair again. Eliza says she’s going to lose every morning now, on purpose. Garrick caught the sword 4 times out of 20.

9 o’clock. Eleanor wants a ship that’s a door. Davren: a keel stone hung in three rings so it stays still and listens. Cassia thought of the rings. Tamar gave the cracked flagstone from the Hold’s lower court.

The Lockwarden’s key. Eleanor looked, didn’t touch. It doesn’t lock anything. It says Knock. You can’t lock an open hand.

Tamar: harbor-right. Any who come and ask. Eleanor cut it in both alphabets.

Garrick asked the Castellan if it would like to go to sea. It said it had never been asked to go anywhere. It said yes. It said thank you.

Uriah set the stone with frost. It smells of winter.

Dusk. The lamp lit. The Castellan said it is very large and it moves. Uriah laughed. First time since Monday.

Carol asked. Thor bounced. Loki hung on the anchor chain and then asked. The goat said Meh and it counted. Iselle’s padlock slid off.

The Kethrans named her the Knock.

Garrick is taking the key back to the Lockwarden. Avarn said Good.

Do you see: 14. Carol won.

And under that, in square, careful builder’s capitals, every letter cut as straight as if it were going into stone, with a smear of black paste on the edge of the page that smells, even now, faintly of pine and burned hair and winter:

ELEANOR STONEHAND. FIRST WARD THAT FLOATS. I’D LIKE IT NOTED THAT IT WAS TAMAR’S IDEA.
