The Greykeep Chronicles

They came through the Concordia gate at sunset on Thursday, and they came the way they always come to Greykeep when it matters: without anyone.

No guards. No heralds. No Aurethar in his human shape standing at the arch. Just Seraphina, and Ignatius, and behind them a big broad man with a short gray beard and a plain black patch over his left eye and a raven on his shoulder, and a woman beside him in a plain brown coat with her red hair tied up in a scarf, carrying a basket.

The King and Queen of Concordia. My wife’s parents. My son’s grandparents.

The Castellan, at the gate, said ”Lexander. Io.” And then, after a pause, in a lower voice, as if it were telling them something private: ”The nursery. He is asleep.”

Io looked up at its lights for a moment.

”Thank you,” she said. ”I know the way.”

* * *

The basket was full of honey cakes. From Concordia, from the palace kitchens, wrapped in a cloth that smelled of cardamom. Io handed it to Helena in the kitchen passage without a word, and Helena took it without a word, and the two of them looked at each other the way two women look at each other when they’ve both been up since three in the morning for the same reason.

”He’s asleep,” said Helena.

”I know,” said Io. ”I’d like to see him anyway.”

”I know you would,” said Helena. ”That’s why I didn’t wake him.”

* * *

We were all in our rooms in the east range. Not the south solar; my father said the south solar was for things the whole house was allowed to know, and this wasn’t, yet. So it was our sitting room, the small one with the window seat, with the door to the nursery standing half open and Carol’s little light glowing white beyond it.

My father and my mother and Adriana on the settle. Carol on the window seat with Ignatius beside her. Aurelia in the chair by the fire, with her hands open in her lap. Helena in the doorway to the passage, because she knitted the blanket and nobody was going to tell her she couldn’t come. Seraphina beside me on the hearthrug.

And Io and Lexander, standing in the doorway of the nursery. Looking in.

* * *

They didn’t go in for a long time.

Lexander stood with his one eye on the cradle and the raven very still on his shoulder. Io stood beside him with her hand on the doorframe. Neither of them said anything. I don’t think either of them breathed much.

Then Io turned around and looked at Seraphina.

”You asked him,” she said. ”To put it to bed.”

”Yes.”

”And he did.”

”Yes. He patted it. Twice. And said night.”

Io closed her eyes.

”I put my first fire out when I was nine,” she said. ”With a bucket. After it had taken the curtains and half the nursery and my mother’s best rug. Nobody asked me to. Nobody asked me anything.” She opened her eyes. ”He’s not two. And somebody asked him. And he said yes.”

She looked at her daughter for a long moment.

”That’s you,” she said. ”That isn’t the flame. That’s you.”

Seraphina looked at the floor and didn’t say anything. But I saw her hand tighten on mine.

* * *

Io went into the nursery.

She knelt down by the cradle, the way Seraphina had knelt two nights before, with her face level with the bars. And she reached in and laid one hand flat on Helena’s blanket.

On the gold thread.

I saw her feel it. I saw it go up her arm and into her face. Her eyes filled. She didn’t move her hand.

”Oh,” she said. Very softly. ”Oh, little one. Look at you.”

* * *

My son woke up.

Not crying. He never cries when he wakes; he just opens his eyes and starts looking at things, as if the world’s been going on without him and he’d like to catch up. He looked at the ceiling. He looked at Carol’s lamp. He looked through the bars, and saw a woman with red hair kneeling there with her hand on his blanket.

He knows Io. He’s been to Concordia a dozen times. She’s the one who gives him the cardamom cake and lets him pull the scarf off her hair.

”Ga,” he said. His word for grandmother. It’s the same as his word for goat, and for gate, and for Grandpa Garrick; context is everything.

”Yes,” said Io. ”Ga. It’s me.”

He looked at her hand, on the blanket. Then he sat up, with great effort, the way he does, all elbows and determination. And he looked at her hand again.

And he reached out, and put his own small hand on top of hers.

* * *

The flame came up between them.

Not over the blanket, this time. Just between their two hands. A small gold flame, the size of a walnut, sitting on the back of Io’s hand under his palm like a coal in a cupped grate.

Io didn’t move. Didn’t flinch. Didn’t pull away. Her own fire, the mending fire, the one half of Concordia’s healers pray to, came up in her hand to meet it. I saw it. A faint warm gold under her skin, rising toward his.

And the two flames touched.

* * *

I don’t know how to tell you what happened then. I felt it from the hearthrug, and so did everyone in the room. My mother put her hand over her mouth. Aurelia sat up very straight in her chair.

Io’s flame wanted to mend. It always does; that’s what it is. It reached for his the way it reaches for a broken bone or a fever, looking for the wrong thing to make right.

And there wasn’t one.

There was nothing in his flame to mend. Nothing broken. Nothing hurt. It was just warm. And Io’s flame, reaching, finding nothing it needed to do, simply stopped. And rested. And was warm too.

Io began to cry.

Not loudly. Just tears, running down her face, while she knelt by the cradle with her grandson’s hand on hers and two flames sitting quietly together on the back of her hand like two cats by one fire.

”I’ve never,” she said. ”In all my life. I’ve never felt it not have to do anything.”

* * *

My son looked at her tears with great interest.

Then he took his hand off hers. And picked up the little gold flame between his finger and thumb, very carefully, the way he picks up a pea. And held it out to her.

”Ta,” he said.

His word for here. For have this. He says it when he gives you a stone, or a snail, or a piece of his toast he doesn’t want.

Io stared at it.

”Ta,” he said again, more firmly, and pushed it at her.

So she held out her palm. And he put the flame in it. And it sat there, in the middle of the Queen of Concordia’s hand, small and gold and warm, belonging to nobody, and perfectly happy about it.

* * *

In the doorway, Lexander made a sound.

I’d never heard him make a sound like that. Lexander is the steadiest man I know. He broke a chair over Severin’s letter and then went and mended it in Grandpa’s workshop. He has Odin’s memories, all of them, the whole long gray weight of a god who hung on a tree for nine nights to learn what things were called. Nothing surprises him. Nothing has surprised him in all the years I’ve known him.

He was standing in the nursery doorway with his hand over his one eye.

”He gave it to her,” he said. ”He gave it.”

* * *

”Lexander,” said my father quietly. ”What is it?”

Lexander took his hand down. His eye was wet.

”May I?” he said. Not to my father. To Seraphina, and me. ”I’d like to send Muninn. He’ll only sit on the cradle. He won’t touch. You can say no.”

Seraphina looked at me. I looked at her.

”Yes,” we said.

* * *

The raven on his shoulder went.

It’s an old bird. Older than Concordia, Lexander says; older than him. Muninn. Memory. The other one, Huginn, is thought, and goes out into the world. Muninn goes in. Backward. Into whatever’s been forgotten.

It flew one short circle around the nursery ceiling, around Carol’s lamp, and landed on the top rail of the cradle, very lightly, and folded its wings. And looked down at my son with one black eye.

My son looked back at it.

”Bird,” he said, with enormous satisfaction.

And Lexander, in the doorway, closed his one eye. And was quiet for a long time.

* * *

When he opened it again, he looked very old.

”There’s a memory,” he said. ”One of his. Of Odin’s. Very far back. So far back I’ve never been able to reach it properly. It’s at the bottom of everything. Before the tree. Before the wars. Before any of the gods had names.” He came into the room, slowly, and sat down on the floor by the cradle, next to Io, the way you’d sit by a fire. ”I’ve only ever had the edge of it. Like the corner of a picture under a lot of other pictures. Muninn’s just shown me the rest.”

Nobody moved.

”It’s a fire,” said Lexander. ”In the dark. In the cold. The first winter there ever was. Not a god’s fire. Not anything’s. Just a fire, on the ground, and people sitting around it, as close as they could get, so that they wouldn’t die.” He was looking at the flame in Io’s palm. ”It didn’t mend anything. It didn’t cut anything. It didn’t want anything. It just kept them warm. All night. Until it was light.”

He swallowed.

”That was the First Flame,” he said. ”Before it was a domain. Before it was a word. That’s what it was. The fire you sit by so you don’t freeze.”

* * *

”But ours—” said Ignatius, from the window seat. ”Mine. Sera’s. Mother’s. They’re not—”

”No,” said Lexander. ”They’re not. They’re halves.” He looked up at Ignatius, and at Seraphina, and at Io beside him. ”In the memory, the fire burned like that for a long time. Then something happened to it. I’ve never been able to see what. Muninn’s shown me now.”

He looked down at his own hand, on his knee.

”A hand reached into it,” he said. ”Out of the dark. Not to warm itself. To take it. To have it. To keep it, so that nobody else would have the only fire in the world.” His voice was very quiet. ”And the hand closed. On the fire. And the fire broke.”

* * *

The room had gone absolutely still.

”It broke in two,” said Lexander. ”Along the middle. The half that wanted to mend what the hand had hurt. And the half that wanted to cut the hand away.” He looked at Io, and at Ignatius, and at Seraphina. ”Mending. Cutting. Every First Flame there’s been since. Every one in Concordia. All of you. Halves. Pieces of a fire that broke the first time someone tried to hold it.”

Aurelia, in her chair, had closed her eyes.

”And the hand?” said my father. Very quietly.

Lexander looked up at him.

”Closed,” he said. ”Knuckles white.”

* * *

Nobody said the name.

Nobody needed to. I felt every hand in that room want to close, and I felt every one of them not. Carol’s, on the window seat. My mother’s, at her mouth. Aurelia’s, open in her lap. Seraphina’s, in mine.

And Helena, in the doorway, who had been silent through all of it, said very quietly to nobody: ”Well. He can’t have that one.”

* * *

”So what is he?” said Seraphina.

She hadn’t moved from the hearthrug. Her voice was very steady.

”My son,” she said. ”What is he? If ours are halves. What’s his?”

Lexander looked at the cradle.

My son had lost interest in all of us. He was lying on his back again, with Muninn on the rail above him, holding up one hand and making a very small gold flame dance on the tip of his forefinger, and watching it, and laughing quietly to himself.

”Whole,” said Lexander.

* * *

”I don’t know how,” he said. ”I don’t think anyone could tell you how. Maybe it’s because he’s both of you. A domain-holder’s son, and a flame-bearer’s. The thing in Garrick that borrows everything, and the thing in Seraphina that’s half of the oldest fire there is. Maybe when they came together in him, the borrowing reached for the other half. And found it. And put it back.” He shook his head. ”Or maybe it’s just him. Maybe some things are just whoever they are.”

He reached out, very slowly, and put one finger near the little flame. Not touching.

”But it’s the whole fire,” he said. ”The one from before the hand. The one that only keeps people warm. I’d know it anywhere. It’s at the bottom of everything I remember.” He drew his finger back. ”Nobody’s seen it since the first winter. Not once. Not in all the long years of the world.”

* * *

”Flame-born,” said Io softly.

Lexander looked at her.

”That’s what we called them, in Concordia,” said Io. ”In the old songs. Before anyone remembered why. The children with the fire in them. Flame-born.” She looked down at the flame in her palm, the one he’d given her. ”I always thought it meant us. Born with the flame.” She swallowed. ”I don’t think it did. I think it meant this. Born of it. The first one. The whole one.” She closed her hand around the flame, very gently. Not a fist. A cup. ”My grandson is flame-born.”

* * *

My father was the first to speak after that.

He got up off the settle and came and stood in the nursery doorway, very large, filling it, looking down at his grandson. And his face did the thing it did on the anniversary, when Faelan read out when the twins were babies and sparked at whoever leaned over the cradle.

”He gave it away,” said my father. ”That’s what I keep coming back to. The first thing he did with it. He gave it to his grandmother because she was crying.”

”Yes,” said Lexander.

”The hand closed on it,” said my father. ”The first time. And it broke.” He was quiet for a moment. ”And he held it out in his open hand and said here.”

He looked at Seraphina, and me.

”That’s not the flame,” he said. ”That’s you two. That’s this house. That’s everybody who ever said you can say no to that boy when he couldn’t even talk.” He turned and looked at Helena in the doorway. ”That’s a blanket that somebody knitted with two kinds of blue because they ran out of the first one and didn’t want to wait.”

Helena looked at the ceiling, very hard.

* * *

They stayed the night. Io slept in the nursery, in the chair by the cradle, with the little flame still in her cupped hand; it didn’t go out until dawn, and when it did, she said, it went out the way a candle goes out when the person who lit it has gone to sleep and doesn’t need it anymore.

Lexander didn’t sleep. I found him on the east wall at two in the morning, in my nook, with Muninn on his shoulder and his king’s-table board on his knees. He’d brought it from Concordia. The king piece was missing. He’d given it to me, months ago, for my son.

”I keep thinking about the game,” he said, when I sat down beside him. ”The king doesn’t move far. All the other pieces move to keep him safe. That’s the whole game.” He looked at the board. ”I told you your wife had just told me the king can walk.”

”I remember.”

”I’ve been playing it wrong for a thousand years,” said Lexander. ”Odin played it wrong before me.” He touched the empty square where the king should be. ”I always thought the point was to keep the king from being taken.” He looked out at the dark. ”I think the point might be to raise one who’ll give it away.”

* * *

”They’ll want him,” I said. ”Won’t they.”

Lexander didn’t answer for a long time.

”There’s something else,” he said at last. ”In the memory. At the very edge. A saying. Old. Older than Concordia. Something about the First Flame, and a holder, and something being made whole.” He frowned. ”I can’t reach it. Muninn can’t either. It’s been torn. Like Meriel’s piece. Somebody tore it out of the bottom of the oldest memory in the world, a long time ago, and took it away.” He looked at me. ”Which means somebody wanted it very much.”

I didn’t say anything.

”Yes,” said Lexander. ”They’ll want him.”

* * *

I went back inside at three. Seraphina was asleep on the settle with her head on Carol’s shoulder; Carol was awake, looking at the nursery door. Through it I could see Io in the chair, asleep, with her cupped hand in her lap glowing faintly gold. And my son asleep in his cradle, arms up, bottom in the air, with Muninn on the rail above him like a black lamp, keeping watch.

Carol looked up at me.

”Through the middle,” she said quietly. ”When he gave it to her. Did you feel it?”

”Yes.”

”I’ve been every god in the room,” said Carol. ”Since I was a baby. I’ve held everything Varrick ever took. I’ve felt every domain there is.” She looked back at the nursery door. ”I’ve never felt anything like that. Not once.”

”Like what?”

”Like something that didn’t need anyone to hold it,” said Carol, ”because it was already all right.”

* * *

Mary’s book. The public one.

Lexander and Io came through the Concordia gate at sunset. No guards. A basket of honey cakes for Helena.

They stayed the night. Io slept in the nursery chair.

Lexander on the east wall at two in the morning with his king’s-table board. The king is still missing. He says that’s correct.

The dragon rang noon on time again. Orla brought it pears. Hosk brought it a pear and a horseshoe. It kept both.

And under that, in a tall, slanting, very old-fashioned hand, the hand of a man who’d learned to write a thousand years before he was born:

Lexander. I came to see my grandson. He gave something away. I have spent a long life not understanding the game.
