A Necromancer's Guide to Clearing a Game Like Tower

Chapter 214: Chapter 214 — The First Signal I

[TIME REMAINING: 05:57:42]

Three maps. One decision.

”Greybridge first,” James said. ”If that crossing stays open, Baldwin can feed soldiers into this operation faster than we can finish it. We hit Redfield or Highwatch first, and fresh troops come over that bridge behind us.”

”Highwatch has the gun,” Cillian said.

”A gun that isn’t live yet. Raymond’s scouts give it days.” James tapped the first map. ”Redfield’s supplies matter, but burning food doesn’t stop men already marching. The bridge stops everything.”

”And we stay together,” Ronan said. ”That’s not a discussion.”

It wasn’t. Five people split across three fortified positions was five people dying in three places.

James ran the order once, fast, so everyone owned it.

”We reach Greybridge before their supply inspection ends and the courtyard clears. Beacon first — Cillian. Nobody lights that fire. No rider leaves the messenger gate. We break the main gate before they seal it, cut through to the bridge gatehouse, drop the drawspan, wreck the mechanism. Flare goes up, we ride for Redfield.” He looked around the table. ”We’re not holding the fort. We’re not killing every man in it. We break the bridge and we leave.”

”Beacon, gate, span, flare,” Finn said. ”Go.”

They left Dunadd on Northern Legion horses, and the arithmetic rode with them.

Thirty-five minutes to Greybridge. Longer from Greybridge to Redfield. The leg to Highwatch was the longest of all. Six hours sounded generous until you subtracted the roads — after that, every fort had to fall in under an hour, and any warning that ran ahead of them would make the next wall slower still.

[FinnsAxes]: HORSES. team zero cavalry arc

[user48291]: why not the artillery one first??

[WicklowClimber]: because the bridge feeds soldiers into everything else. keep up

[CrownLoyal_Kev]: ”sabotage the king’s army” arc more like

[MOD]: Slow mode enabled.

Nobody in the saddle answered.

They dismounted below a wooded ridge and bellied up to the crest with a little over five hours left.

Greybridge sat where the map said, built around a stone crossing over a wide grey river. The central section of the bridge was a wooden drawspan over the deepest water. The main road ran through the outer gate, across a courtyard, and into the bridge gatehouse. A second portcullis guarded the passage to the bridge controls.

The beacon platform stood above the eastern wall. The stables and messenger gate sat along the same side.

Hills and forest closed off every sightline south — from here, Redfield and Highwatch didn’t exist. The forts talked to each other with beacon fires for the simple message and riders for the rest.

Raymond’s map was mostly right. Mostly.

”Garrison’s bigger than his numbers,” Finn muttered, counting helmets on the wall.

”Convoy in the courtyard,” Ronan said. ”Being inspected. Wagons all over the road behind the gate.”

Maeve was looking east.

”Empty stalls in the stable. Four, maybe five. And fresh tracks out the messenger gate.” She followed the hoofprints with her eyes until the trees ate them. ”Messengers, scouts, a patrol — no way to know without following them.”

”Raymond’s map has their patrol going out the west road,” James said.

”Raymond’s map is also short about twenty men.”

The convoy inspection was wrapping up below. Once those wagons rolled across the bridge, the courtyard would empty and every gate in Greybridge would shut properly.

James looked at the tracks going east, and at the open gate below, and made the call.

”No time to chase hoofprints. We go now, while the gate’s still working for us.”

They came off the ridge at a gallop.

The wall spotted them inside twenty seconds. Shouts went up, and the main gate began swinging inward.

Finn got there first.

He came out of the saddle at speed and drove one of his axes into the closing edge of the gate leaf, wedging it, his whole body against the timber while guards on the far side threw their weight into shutting it. Arrows started coming off the wall.

Ronan hit the gap a breath later, set his shield into it, and heaved. The gate leaf ground backward. The gap became a door.

”Beacon,” Cillian said, and was gone along the base of the eastern wall.

Maeve came through behind Ronan with a barrier already up, and arrows rang off it from both sides of the gate. James came through last, Durendal drawn, staying close without crowding the two big men’s arcs.

Above the eastern wall, the beacon crew was already running for the brazier.

Cillian didn’t hit the fuel pile — one stray arc and the whole platform would go up and light itself. He hit the structure instead. Lightning blew the ladder apart and took out half the stair, and the two crewmen scrambling up it dropped, thrown clear of the brazier.

Cillian went up the wall the fast way and landed on the platform.

A soldier came at him along the wall walk. Cillian put him on his back without leaving arm’s reach of the brazier. Two more tried the far walk and got driven back the same way.

The beacon stayed dark, because he stayed on it.

The courtyard was a box of wagons and shields.

Crown infantry formed a line across the crowded space — smart, using the convoy wagons as walls, jabbing out of the narrow lanes between them. There was no room to spread.

Finn went straight into the shield line, because every minute it held was a minute the commander used to seal the gatehouse.

Ronan stayed on the breach, keeping the outer gate open at their backs. Getting locked inside was the fast way to die here.

Maeve set herself where she could see the walls, the beacon, and the messenger gate all at once, and kept the arrows off everyone.

James worked with Durendal and Necro Blast, because the fight had started with no corpses in it.

A Crown soldier came through the gap beside a wagon, low and quick, angling for Maeve’s flank. James met the thrust on Durendal, turned it, and cut him down. A second man came through the same gap behind him, and James put a Necro Blast into his chest at three meters.

[CALL OF SOULS ACTIVATED]

[MANA RESTORED]

Part of what he’d spent came back cold up his arm.

He didn’t spend the corpse yet. He waited.

The shield line pushed back against Finn, and more defenders packed in around him and Ronan — eight, ten men, shoulder to shoulder in the wagon lanes.

Now.

James anchored the skill in the fresh corpse at their feet.

[DEATH CHAIN ACTIVATED]

[COOLDOWN: 4 MINUTES]

[MENTAL STRAIN WARNING]

Black chains erupted out of the dead man and went through the packed formation like roots through wet ground, wrapping shields, arms, throats, dragging necrotic cold through the front rank. The line’s coordination died before any of its men did.

Then the bill arrived.

James’s vision doubled. Pressure built behind his eyes like a thumb pressing from inside, and his next step came half a beat late, and he knew — the way he knew his own heartbeat — that the skill was gone for four minutes and that every cast after this one would come harder.

Finn didn’t waste what it bought.

He broke a chained shield aside and drove through the gap between two wagons before the line could knit. Maeve’s light hardened over him and Ronan both, and Ronan finally left the breach and came up the courtyard.

The fort commander was good.

He didn’t feed his men into the grinder. From the gatehouse steps he pulled them back instead — archers concentrating on Maeve, a squad running for the broken beacon stair, the courtyard soldiers ordered to delay, not to win. Behind him, the inner portcullis began to descend, and his best guards withdrew toward the bridge controls.

And a rider broke from the stables, flat-out for the eastern messenger gate.

Cillian saw him from the beacon platform.

He blew the last standing section of stair into kindling — no one was climbing back up there quickly — and dropped off the platform, and ran the wall.

The messenger gate was still swinging open when the lightning took the rider out of the saddle. The horse ran on through riderless. The message didn’t.

The courtyard had corpses in it now, and James spent them.

Eight temporary skeletons pulled themselves out of fallen Crown soldiers, and he kept the orders stupid-simple. Three to the messenger gate — stand, block, let nothing mounted through. Two under the beacon — attack anyone who touches the stair. Three behind Finn and Ronan — follow, fight.

Then the courtyard’s remaining formation reformed in front of the gatehouse, and James did the arithmetic on one particular corpse — dead man in the middle of six defenders; Finn left of the wagon line, Ronan behind his shield, Maeve back, horses and supply wagons clear.

[CORPSE EXPLOSION ACTIVATED]

The blast took the formation apart and did not touch anything James needed intact.

The way to the gatehouse was open.
