A Necromancer's Guide to Clearing a Game Like Tower

Chapter 212: Chapter 212 — Three Forts I

The gates of Dunadd closed behind them with a sound like a decision.

The escort formed up around Team Zero — four soldiers, spears carried politely but carried — and the mounted officer led them up into the city, and James spent the climb reading everything.

Dunadd was not waiting for anyone.

The lower districts were packed with refugee families, sleeping in doorways, queueing at water barrels, while soldiers searched incoming wagons and controlled every movement through the gate arches. Wounded men went past on stretchers toward rows of treatment tents that had once been a market square.

Blacksmiths worked in the open street, forges dragged out of workshops because the workshops couldn’t hold the demand. The ring of hammers never stopped, anywhere, the whole way up.

In one yard, workers stripped a mound of monster carcasses down to material — hides stretched on racks, tusks and horn sorted into baskets, an ogre’s ribcage being sawn into plates. The invasion, recycled into armour to fight the invasion.

A heavy bolt-thrower blocked half the road, its crew replacing a split bow arm and a dismantled winch. The escort simply walked Team Zero around it. Nobody apologized. Nobody had time.

Soldiers trained in every yard they passed. Not paradeground drill — short brutal circuits, spear walls forming and reforming, men who should have been resting learning to be faster instead.

And behind them, the rescued convoy was already being eaten by the city: food wagons split off toward the lower districts, the medicine crates rushed uphill under separate guard, moving faster than Team Zero was.

Every level of the climb passed through another wall, another guarded arch, another ring. Dunadd was an onion made of fortifications, and the command hall sat near the top of it — not hidden away above the war, but planted in the middle of its noise, close enough that runners reached it at a sprint.

The soldiers they passed reacted five different ways.

Some had heard the convoy report — James caught the word travelling ahead of them, the foreigners, the ones from the valley road — and those ones watched with careful, measuring respect. Others saw only unfamiliar armour and strangers’ weapons and stared with the flat suspicion of men who’d been told spies were everywhere, because they had been.

A knot of local adventurers outside a tavern went silent as they passed, eyes locked on Durendal’s hilt and on Maeve, whose plate matched nothing in their world.

Refugee children stared at Cillian’s gear until he winked at one, and she hid.

And not one soul in the city knew that forty million people were walking up the hill with them.

[TowerWatchKR]: this is a functioning war city. logistics, triage, materiel recycling. rebel camp my ass

[CrownLoyal_Kev]: everything you’re praising belongs to the crown. those are the KING’S soldiers being hoarded up here

[FrontierWife]: the king’s soldiers, defending the king’s people, which is more than the capital’s doing

James read none of it. He was reading the walls instead.

Because the walls were the real briefing.

The northern battlements bristled with monster-killing hardware — heavy bolt-throwers, reinforced gates, stacked bundles of replacement stakes, cauldron mounts. Everything up there was built to stop something huge that came in waves and didn’t negotiate.

The southern walls carried none of that. They carried eyes. Scout posts, signal towers, riders coming and going through guarded passages, and rank after rank of soldiers watching the roads that led toward the interior of the kingdom.

Two faces on one city.

”Seeing it?” Finn murmured.

”Seeing it,” James said. ”North wall’s for monsters. South wall’s for men.”

The command hall was a storm with a roof on it.

No throne. No dais. A vast scarred table dominated the room with the north of Caerleon mapped across it, and around the table moved a crowd of officers, messengers, aides — reports arriving, markers moving, three arguments running at once in overlapping military shorthand.

It took James a moment to find the prince, because the prince looked like the rest of it.

Raymond stood over the map in practical field armour, one pauldron still carrying a dried spray of monster blood that nobody had found time to clean. His cloak was thrown over a chairback like a thing he’d been defeated by. He was moving unit markers with both hands while an officer read losses off a slate.

He was younger than the projection had made him. The tiredness was older.

A messenger shoved through to the table’s edge. ”Watchtower Nine, my lord. Missed its dusk beacon last night, missed the dawn flags as well. Eight sent a rider — he’s just come through the gate. No fire, no signal, no answer at their wall.”

Raymond didn’t stop moving markers.

”Kern’s patrol is closest — here.” He slid a marker two hand-spans. ”They divert, they look, they do not engage anything bigger than they are. Attacked, abandoned, or something sitting on it keeping it dark — I want to know which, and the ford behind it watched by dusk tomorrow.”

”The ford garrison would be down to—”

”I know what it’s down to.” He looked up at the objecting officer, a grey woman with a torn ear. ”Say the rest.”

”The ford can’t be held with twenty, my lord. It’s a death sentence with a river view.”

”Then it’s an observation post, not a hold. They watch, they signal, they run. Change the order.” Back to the map. ”Next.”

That was the introduction. No ceremony, no herald. The room simply worked, and the prince worked at the middle of it, and his officers argued with him to his face and were heard or cut off depending on whether the argument was about winning or about being right.

The soldiers didn’t behave like servants around a royal. They behaved like veterans around a commander whose orders had kept them alive so far.

Team Zero waited at the edge of it, under guard, and James used the waiting.

The campaign map told its story to anyone who could read one.

Monster pressure, marked in black, leaned against the whole northern and eastern frontier like floodwater against a dam. Watchtowers along it were crossed out — six, seven of them. Roads inland wore hatch marks: unsafe without escort. And Dunadd sat at the centre of everything that still held, the hub the whole remaining network hung from.

South of it, a different color. Crown markers, advancing up the roads. And three of them sat fixed in a shallow arc across Dunadd’s southern approaches — close, mutually spaced, deliberate.

The others were reading it too.

”He can’t reinforce north,” Finn said under his breath. ”Look — his best units are pinned on the south wall. Every soldier watching Baldwin is a soldier not on the frontier.”

”And look at the north itself,” Ronan said quietly. His finger indicated without pointing — a string of settlement markers flagged in grey. ”Those aren’t defense orders. That’s an evacuation list. He’s choosing which villages to lose.”

”The three southern positions,” Maeve murmured. ”They’re not assault postures. Look at the spacing — they’re sitting on his roads. Supply control. They’re not here to storm Dunadd. They’re here to starve its options.”

”And tightening,” Cillian said. ”Check the dates on the markers. Those three arrived in the last two weeks. It’s a slow fist, closing, while the monsters chew on his back.”

”Correct on all four counts.”

They turned. Raymond had crossed to them without ceremony, wiping his hands on a cloth, and his eyes said he’d been aware of exactly how long they’d been reading his map and had let them.

”The convoy report says five foreigners saved my medicine, my grain, and thirty of my people.” He looked them over — slowly, one at a time, the way a man prices horses. ”It also says you fight like nothing my officers have seen, that you carry weapons no smith in this kingdom forged, and that you claim to have come to support me.” He tossed the cloth onto the table. ”So. Questions. Where are you from?”

”Outside Caerleon,” James said. ”Far outside. Over the sea, past anywhere your maps go. You won’t know the place, and I can’t easily explain it.”

”Convenient.”

”True anyway.”

”Why does the frontier of a kingdom in succession crisis attract five foreign fighters?”

”We were required to choose,” James said, and kept it exact. ”Between you and your brother. Before we’d met either of you, on limited information, with no option to refuse. We chose you.”

Something sharpened in Raymond’s attention. ”Required by whom?”

”By the terms of how we came here. I can’t explain it better without lying to you, and I’d rather not lie to you.”

The hall had gone quieter around the exchange. Officers listening while pretending to work.

”Then answer what you can,” Raymond said. ”Do you serve another ruler? A guild, a company, a foreign army?”

”We serve ourselves. Five of us. No one stands behind us.”

”What do you want in return?”

”To stop this kingdom’s destruction. We’ve seen what’s coming if the frontier breaks while you and your brother bleed each other. We’d rather that future not arrive.”

”And the last question.” Raymond stepped closer, and his voice lost its briefing-room flatness. ”My brother has named me traitor. His army is on my roads. If you support me, sooner or later the enemy in front of you wears a stag and a man’s face. Are you prepared to fight Crown soldiers?”

The room waited.

”We’ll defend ourselves and we’ll complete what we take on,” James said. ”But I’ll tell you now, plainly, so it’s never a surprise: our support isn’t blind. We won’t murder Crown soldiers just because two princes are enemies. If that answer costs us your welcome, better to know tonight.”

He heard the reaction around the hall — a stir, an officer somewhere muttering conditions, they come with conditions — and Finn heard it too, cataloguing which faces hardened.

Raymond didn’t harden.

He studied James for a long moment with an expression that wasn’t anger and wasn’t admiration. It was the expression of a man re-shelving something into a more dangerous category: powerful enough to be useful, independent enough to need watching.

”Honest mercenaries,” he said at last. ”Rarer than dragons.”

”We’re not mercenaries. Nobody’s paying us.”

”That,” Raymond said, ”is the part I find hardest to believe. And the part that interests me most.”

Maeve had watched him through the whole exchange — specifically through both mentions of his brother. Baldwin’s name had crossed the conversation twice, and both times Raymond’s voice had stayed level, his hands still. Whatever he felt about Baldwin, it wasn’t running his mouth for him.

Or he’s disciplined enough to hide it, she thought. Either way — not a man drowning in his own anger. Yet.

Cillian, for his part, said absolutely nothing, which for Cillian was a strategic contribution.

Raymond turned to the map, and the interview became a briefing without anyone announcing the change.

”Your convoy attack wasn’t an exception. It’s the new shape of things.” His hand swept the northern line. ”Monster bands that stayed beyond the fortifications for thirty years are pushing south of them. Seven beacon posts have gone dark this month. I don’t have the riders to chase every dark tower, because—” the hand moved south ”—of these.”

Three markers. The shallow arc.

”My brother’s vanguard took three positions on my southern approaches. Recent — inside two weeks, while his heralds were still reading proclamations about lawful command.” He touched them one at a time.
