Vampire Progenitor System

The fight was over. The only sounds left were the groan of settling rubble and the hiss of cooling stone. The air hung thick with the smell of ozone, ash, and something coppery. Lucifer stood in the center of the devastation, his dark clothes torn, blood—both black and red—drying on his skin. The living shadows that armored him were receding, sinking back into his flesh like retreating tide.

He didn’t move for a long moment, just breathed in the wreckage. Behind him, the portal shimmered, a vertical pool of liquid night. Through it, figures in stark, crimson armor began to step through, their movements silent and synchronized. His army. He didn’t turn to look.

Footsteps approached from behind, careful on the broken ground.

”Damn, Luce,” Ken’s voice cut through the quiet, rough but familiar. ”You redecorate the place?”

Lucifer finally turned. His friends stood there, looking as battered as he felt. Ken, his jacket shredded, was already lighting a cigarette, his golden eyes scanning the battlefield with a fighter’s appraisal. Ella was at his side, her face smudged with soot, her expression caught between concern and grim satisfaction. Angel was a step behind, her sharp eyes missing nothing, while Mob was a silent mountain at the rear, his massive arms crossed.

Ella’s gaze went from Lucifer to the faint, glowing dust that was all that remained of Nythra. ”An adversary?” she asked, her voice softer than Ken’s.

Lucifer gave a single, slow nod. ”Yeah.”

”One less problem,” Angel stated, her tone flat and practical.

”Don’t get too comfortable,” Lucifer said, rolling a stiff shoulder with a wince. ”She wasn’t working alone. She and Adam... they have an understanding. He probably sent her to see what I was made of.”

Ken blew out a stream of smoke. ”So he knows now.”

”He knows.” Lucifer’s eyes, the color of old blood, met each of theirs. ”Which means the clock’s ticking. The other adversaries will be moving. And they’re not coming for tea.”

Ella hugged herself, a slight shiver running through her. ”So what’s the plan? We can’t just wait for them to pick us off one by one.”

”We don’t wait,” Lucifer said, his voice low and steady. ”We draw them out. All of them. We make enough noise that Adam and every other power-hungry freak in this broken world can’t look away.”

Ken cracked a grin, all sharp teeth. ”A killing spree. I like it.”

”Hold on,” Angel cut in, raising a hand. ”Draw them out with what? We’re not exactly a parade.”

Lucifer gestured with his chin toward the growing ranks of vampires. ”We are now. And we go after their territory. Their pride.” A faint, cold smile touched his lips. ”We start with the so-called ’gods’.”

Ella let out a short, dry laugh. ”Zeus and his crew? Those clowns? They’re all flash, no finish. I’ve seen stronger lightning from a faulty socket.”

”Exactly,” Lucifer agreed. ”But they’ve got followers. They control chunks of this city. Breaking their toys is the fastest way to get the big players to the table.”

Mob finally spoke, his voice a low rumble. ”They will come.”

”They will,” Lucifer confirmed, his gaze shifting to the distant horizon where unnatural storm clouds were already gathering. ”And we’ll be ready.”

He started walking, not waiting for a reply. The others fell in step without hesitation, a unit forged in fire and loss. The vampire legion moved with them, a silent, crimson tide flowing through the ruins.

They moved through the corpse of the city for what felt like an hour. The silence was broken by the distant crackle of energy. The air began to smell of a coming storm.

”Showtime,” Ken muttered, tossing his cigarette aside.

They rounded the corner of a collapsed freeway and entered a vast, open plaza. At its center, standing on a dais of fused rubble, was Zeus. He was exactly as the old stories described—imposing, bearded, wrapped in white robes, lightning crackling around his clenched fists. But up close, you could see the strain around his eyes, the sweat on his brow. The power looked… borrowed.

”Lucifer!” his voice boomed, echoing off the empty skyscrapers. ”You dare profane my domain!”

Lucifer didn’t break stride. ”Your domain is a dump,” he called back, his voice cutting through the theatrics. ”And your lightning’s weak.”

Zeus’s face flushed with rage. He thrust his hands skyward, and a brilliant fork of lightning lanced down, aimed directly at Lucifer’s head.

Lucifer didn’t dodge. He lifted a hand, and a shield of concentrated shadow bloomed before him. The lightning struck it and shattered into a thousand harmless sparks, fizzling out against the dark.

Zeus stared, his confidence visibly cracking.

”See?” Ella said from beside Lucifer, already priming her weapons. ”All flash.”

Ken was already moving, a blur of motion as he shifted. He didn’t go for Zeus. He tore into the flank of a group of lesser demigods who were nervously holding position, scattering them like bowling pins.

Angel was right behind him, her form wreathed in fire. ”The small fries are mine!” she called out, her claws slicing through a golden spear before it could be leveled at Ken’s back.

Lucifer walked straight toward Zeus, who was now frantically calling down more lightning, each bolt wilder and less accurate than the last.

”You are nothing!” Zeus roared, his voice tinged with panic. ”A relic!”

Lucifer was in front of him now. He moved faster than the eye could follow, his shadow-clad hand shooting out and closing around the god’s throat. The lightning dancing over Zeus’s body sputtered and died.

”I’m a reality check,” Lucifer said, his voice quiet, almost conversational.

He didn’t make a grand speech. He just squeezed. There was a sickening crunch, and the light went out of Zeus’s eyes. The mighty god-king went limp, his body crumbling into motes of fading, golden light that were quickly swallowed by the pervasive gloom.

The fight, such as it was, was over in less than a minute.

Ken stood over a groaning demigod, his foot planted on its chest. ”That was it?” he asked, sounding almost disappointed.

”Told you,” Ella said, slinging her rifle back over her shoulder. ”Clowns.”

Lucifer let the last of the golden dust fall from his fingers. He looked around the now-silent plaza, then up at the sky, as if addressing someone far away.

”One down,” he said, his voice carrying in the sudden quiet. ”The rest of you are next.”

He turned back to his team, his expression grim but resolved. ”Let’s go. They’ll have felt that. The real ones will be coming now.”

As they moved on, leaving the empty plaza behind, the only sound was the steady, marching tread of the army at their backs, and the whisper of a war that was only just beginning.
