Gardener of Eden

Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Vargr the Dire Wolf Monarch

After restocking their pouches with Seraphina’s newly crafted high-tier elixirs and strapping on Barney’s newly reinforced gear, Squad 07 marched out through the Citadel’s outer gates. Leaving the vibrant terraced farmlands behind, they tracked the trail deep into the Whispering Ravine, a jagged limestone canyon on the eastern edge of the Golden Steppe where the floor’s supreme ruler held absolute dominance.

As the party stepped into the wide, rock-strewn amphitheater at the heart of the canyon, the ground vibrated under a sudden, overwhelming pressure.

From a high rocky ledge above, a colossal nightmare leaped down, landing with a bone-shattering thud that cracked the bedrock into a web of deep fissures. Standing at the absolute peak of Tier 1 power was Fenris, the Apex Ravager, a Level 10 Field Boss.

The creature was an absolute force of nature—a gargantuan dire wolf standing nearly twenty feet tall at the shoulder, covered in scarred, steel-like slate fur with eyes that burned like molten copper. Unlike many higher-floor bosses that relied on grand magic circles or elemental breath attacks, Fenris was a monster of pure physical perfection and primal carnage.

[Field Boss Identified]

Name: Vargr, the Steel-Fanged Apex

Title: Sovereign of the Whispering Ravine

Level: 10 (Peak Tier 1)

Type: Beast / Dire Wolf Monarch

Boss Overview & Traits

Steel-Bound Hide: Densely packed, slate-gray fur that acts like hardened plate armor against standard physical attacks.

Sonic Sprint: Breaks the sound barrier during straight-line dashes, leaving sonic shockwaves in its wake that knock down nearby combatants.

Crush-Bite: Jaw strength capable of snapping enchanted weapons and shattering stone pillars effortlessly.

Call of the Pack (30% HP Trigger): Unleashes a floor-wide roar that summons 20 Level 8–9 Steppe Shadow-Wolves from the canyon cliffs while driving Vargr into a high-speed blood frenzy.

Caelen drew his blades as a sharp wind swept across the canyon floor, while Mirei notched a heavy arrow and Princess Lyra readied her defense barriers. Barney braced his warhammer, and Seraphina kept her fingers on her potion belts.

At the front, Rowan gripped his trusty hoe, tipping the brim of his Enchanted Straw Hat with a low, confident grin as the colossal dire wolf bared its massive, razor-sharp fangs.

”No magical tricks or elemental gimmicks,” Rowan said, stepping forward as his core mana hummed beneath his skin. ”Just pure strength and speed. Let’s take down the apex predator of Floor 5.”

With a bone-rattling roar that shakes loose gravel from the limestone canyon, Vargr, the Steel-Fanged Apex, lowers its broad, scarred head, locking its fiery copper eyes straight onto Rowan and Squad 07 as the battle begins.

The massive dire wolf came down like a falling meteor, its razor-sharp claws tearing through the air with a deafening sonic crack. Barney planted his boots firmly into the cracked limestone and raised his heavy tower shield just in time. The collision sounded like a cannon blast; earth flared outward in a violent shockwave as Vargr, the Steel-Fanged Apex, crashed directly into him. Though Barney’s shield held impeccably strong, the sheer kinetic force resonated through his heavy armor, rattling his very bones and sending a dull numbness shooting up his arms.

Before the giant beast could press its advantage, Caelen darted into the fray like a shadow. With fluid, lightning-fast blade work, Caelen began parrying the boss’s ferocious follow-up strikes, his sword deflecting the immense weight of Vargr’s sweeping paws just enough to bleed off the kinetic energy and lessen the brutal pressure on Barney.

Princess Lyra seized the fleeting openings, sliding swiftly between the beast’s giant legs to strike at its flanks. She found immediate difficulty dealing any significant damage, however, as Vargr’s dense, slate-gray fur acted like heavy plate armor, causing her sharp strikes to skim harmlessly off the thick hide. Only Mirei managed to carve out true damage. Perched high on a crumbling stone pillar, Mirei drew her heavy bow to full extension, piercing the chaotic fray with deadly precision. Her arrows targeted the boss’s soft weak spots—grazing the edge of its burning copper eye and biting deep into the vulnerable flesh near its neck.

Infuriated by the stinging strikes, Vargr turned to crush Caelen with a wild, wide-sweeping paw. Expecting the blow, Caelen locked his stance and executed a perfect parry. The blade met the massive claw at an exact angle, redirecting the boss’s colossal momentum completely sideways.

Severely unbalanced by the deflected blow, the giant dire wolf lost its footing on the loose gravel, crashing heavily onto its side with an earth-shaking thud.

Lyra didn’t hesitate for a single heartbeat. Stepping instantly into the vulnerable gap, she lunged beneath the beast’s thrashing limbs and carved deep, precise strikes straight into its soft, exposed belly. Crimson light flared along her blades, applying a constant, severe Bleed Debuff that began steadily draining the monster’s massive health pool as Vargr thrashed in pain.

Seeing the giant dire wolf thrashed and struggling on its side, Rowan moved instantly. He slammed the wooden haft of his hoe hard into the cracked limestone, channeling his core mana directly into the stone.

”Vines of the Thorns!”

A surge of emerald light fractured the bedrock beneath Vargr. Within a split second, thick, writhing brambles burst from the earth across a five-meter radius, unleashing a nest of razor-sharp thorns. The rapid-growth vines coiled violently around the wolf’s thrashing limbs and massive torso, locking the monster firmly in place. Vargr unleashed a pained roar, completely Rooted for three agonizing seconds as the magical brambles dug deep past its slate-gray hide, inflicting continuous nature damage that ripped through its defenses.

Without allowing the beast a single breath to break free, Rowan closed the distance in a single fluid stride. Localized earth and wind mana surged together along the broad edge of his hoe’s blade, causing the metal to hum with a lethal, pressurized radiance.

With a powerful twist of his torso, Rowan unleashed Scythe of the Harvester.

His hoe swung through the air in a wide, sweeping horizontal arc. The pressurized mana edge carved cleanly through the atmosphere, tearing into Vargr’s exposed flank with immense physical force and a shattering blast of earth mana. Bone-crunching impact echoed through the canyon as the blade bit deep into the boss’s hide.

The strike landed with brutal precision, immediately triggering the skill’s secondary effect. Crimson energy flared along the freshly carved wound, instantly inflicting [Reap]. Stacking directly on top of the constant bleed debuff Princess Lyra had just applied to its belly, the curse began dealing continuous physical damage based on five percent of the monster’s missing health over six seconds.

Vargr thrashed frantically against the thorny bindings, its health bar plunging precipitously as the combined bleeding, nature damage, and earth impact ravaged its massive frame—rapidly dragging the apex predator down toward its critical thirty percent threshold.

Vargr’s health bar flashed dangerously in the red, plunging straight past the thirty percent mark under the relentless onslaught of bleeding wounds, vine damage, and Rowan’s devastating harvest strike.

Feeling the cold breath of mortality, the apex beast snapped.

With a violent thrust of its massive frame, Vargr shattered the lingering brambles binding its legs. It threw its scarred head back toward the sky, its fiery copper eyes shifting into a blinding, blood-red fury. A deafening, apocalyptic howl reverberated across the canyon, violently shaking the limestone cliffs and tearing through the air in visible shockwaves.

The floor-wide roar hadn’t even faded out into the open steppe before the surrounding cliff edges came alive. Cascading down the sheer stone walls like a tide of darkness, twenty Level 8 and Level 9 Steppe Shadow-Wolves landed in the dusty amphitheater. Their shadowy fur melded seamlessly with the canyon dust, their red eyes locking onto Squad 07 with murderous intent as they formed a tight, snarling perimeter around the party.

Simultaneously, Vargr’s massive body transformed. Crimson steam exploded from its skin, driving the monster into a terrifying Blood Frenzy. The boss’s movement speed and attack power surged to horrifying heights; its outline dissolved entirely into a hyper-kinetic blur of silver and red light.

”Hold the formation!” Barney bellowed, slamming his tower shield down and shifting his stance to cover the backline. ”We’ve got company on all sides!”

Mirei seamlessly pulled three arrows from her quiver at once, while Caelen and Princess Lyra backed up to guard Seraphina, their weapons held high against the circling shadow-wolves.

At the front of the circle, Rowan’s eyes narrowed beneath the brim of his Enchanted Straw Hat. He didn’t flinch as the twenty shadow-wolves lunged forward in unison and the frantic, blood-frenzied boss charged like a crimson lightning bolt. His core mana churned with absolute calm, ready to unleash the full authority of the earth upon the frenzied pack.

As the wave of twenty shadowy beasts closed in, Rowan dropped into a low, channeled stance and drove the iron edge of his trusty hoe deep into the cracked limestone bedrock. For a brief second and a half, his core mana flared with a blinding, golden radiance, locking his frame into place as the earth beneath him hummed with immense, concentrated force.

”Earthbreaker Plough: Celestial Furrow!”

Rowan exploded forward like a localized catastrophe. The ground didn’t just break—it erupted into violent carnage. Across a massive thirty-meter cone, the canyon floor upheaved in a terrifying, earth-shattering wave, turning solid stone and subterranean soil into a churning sea of jagged earth and crushing boulders. The charging horde of Steppe Shadow-Wolves was caught completely unawares, hurled skyward by subterranean shockwaves before being pulverized beneath hundreds of tons of flying rock. In a single devastating stroke, the entire pack was decimated.

Before the dust from the upturned terrain could even settle, Seraphina seized the opening. Whipping several glowing crimson vials from her alchemical belt, she hurled them with fluid precision straight over Rowan’s shoulder.

The Incendiary Elixirs shattered upon impact against Vargr, the Steel-Fanged Apex, instantly erupting into a roaring inferno of white-hot alchemical fire. The pressurized flames washed over the boss’s blood-frenzied frame, melting through its dense, slate-gray hide and igniting the open, torn flesh left behind by Lyra’s bleeding strikes and Rowan’s harvest cut.

An agonizing screech tore from the monster’s throat as it thrashed frantically within the pyre. Within seconds, the thick, sickening stench of scorched flesh, burning fur, and roasted blood filled the entire limestone canyon, rolling across the battlefield in heavy, acrid clouds.

Engulfed in relentless flames and stripped of its pack, the apex predator stumbled on charred limbs, its fiery copper eyes dimming as its crimson health bar flickered at the absolute edge of total collapse. Rowan adjusted the brim of his Enchanted Straw Hat, stepping smoothly through the rising smoke with his trusty hoe raised, ready to deliver the final strike.

Launching off the upturned bedrock, Rowan leapt high into the air, clearing the lingering flames and soaring directly over the staggering boss. As he reached the apex of his jump, dense gravitational force gathered around the heavy iron of his hoe, wrapping the weapon in a shimmering, ultra-dense aura.

”Threshing Strike!”

Rowan brought the tool down in a violent overhead slam. The gravitational force collided squarely with the back of Vargr’s armored skull with a sound like a cracking mountain. The shattering force ripped straight through the beast’s dense, slate-gray hide, stripping away twenty-five percent of its armor while inflicting brutal bonus damage against its natural plating. The sheer kinetic shockwave crushed Vargr down into the pulverized dirt, leaving the monstrous apex predator completely Stunned, its copper eyes going dull and unfocused as its snout plowed into the ground.

”Now!” Rowan called out, landing lightly on his feet.

Caelen and Princess Lyra didn’t miss a single heartbeat. Moving like twin blurs of silver and steel, they closed in from opposite sides of the helpless boss.

Caelen channeled pressurized wind mana along his dual blades from the left, while Lyra coated her longsword in brilliant radiant energy from the right. In perfect, deadly synchronization, the two vanguard fighters crossed paths beneath the beast’s exposed neck. Their blades flashed in a seamless, scissor-like arc, cleaving cleanly through hardened hide, dense muscle, and bone without a shred of resistance.

A blinding crimson flash erupted through the canyon air.

With a heavy, echoing thud, the colossal head of Vargr, the Steel-Fanged Apex was severed clean off, rolling across the limestone earth before the giant dire wolf’s body collapsed lifelessly into the dust. The lingering alchemical flames faded into soft smoke, leaving behind a profound silence across the Whispering Ravine.

Moments later, a massive shower of glowing golden experience motes and high-tier boss loot began to materialize above the fallen sovereign. Rowan adjusted the brim of his Enchanted Straw Hat, resting his trusty hoe over his shoulder with a calm smirk as the notification windows of their victory flared before the squad. Floor 5 was officially conquered.
