Please Stop Spreading Rumors About Me — They Keep Coming True

So I told the whole world the truth, and the truth set fire to everything.

I stood in the center of the ring, under the Verse-Blade’s raised blade, my armor a web of cracks, Xue Ningzhi’s power closing around the Scroll like a fist — and I told them. All of it. At the top of my lungs, carried to the edge of the continent by ten million loving hearts.

”I AM A FRAUD!” I roared. ”You’ve heard me say it before and you took it for humility — but this time you’re going to BELIEVE it, because it’s TRUE! I can’t fight! I never could! Every deed you’ve ever sung about me was an accident! There is a power that isn’t mine — a thing on my shoulder that none of you can see, that has been making me a legend this whole time — and I am no more a demon-slayer than the noodle-seller in the third row! I’m a clerk! That’s the truth! ALL OF IT!”

I felt the belief shudder. Felt the world’s certainty about me crack right alongside my armor — and for one terrifying instant I was a fraud confessing to a planet, exposed, naked, the seam wide open for Xue Ningzhi to pull.

But I wasn’t done. Because a half-truth would have killed me. Only the whole truth could save me.

”AND HIM!” I flung out my hand at the Verse-Blade, frozen above me. ”THE EMPIRE’S PERFECT WEAPON! Do you know what he REALLY is? He’s a BOY! They took him as a child and they wore his name away, sang over it for fifteen years until there was nothing left but a legend wearing a person’s skin! He can’t remember his own MOTHER’S name for him! The Empire of a Thousand Verses did that — they HOLLOWED OUT A CHILD and called it a champion! LOOK AT HIM! That’s not a weapon! That’s a STOLEN BOY!”

And I turned, finally, to the high dark box, to the pale hand at the rail, to her.

”AND THERE’S A GAP AT THE TOP OF THE SKY!” My voice broke with it. ”You’ve all seen it! That dark place where no name hangs! Someone used to be there — someone GOOD, the brightest of us all — and the Empire ERASED them, unwrote them, until not one of you remembers they were ever real! They call it MERCY! They call forgetting a CURE! But it’s not mercy to wipe away the quiet and the good and the real! IT’S MURDER, AND THEY’VE BEEN DOING IT FOR A THOUSAND YEARS, AND I AM DONE LETTING YOU NOT KNOW!”

Then the thing happened that no one — not Xue Ningzhi, not the First Author, not even the Scroll — had understood was coming.

Because every single word was true.

And I had ten million people who loved me — who knew me, the real tired clerk me, and loved me anyway — turning the full force of their belief on the truth as I spoke it. Belief that strong, pointed at something actually true, does not bend reality into a lie.

It makes the truth undeniable.

I felt it sweep across the world like a tide turning. Ten million and more and more people believing the truth — believing I was a fraud, and loving me more for finally trusting them with it. Believing the Verse-Blade was a stolen boy — and seeing him, suddenly, truly, the child under the glass. Believing the Empire erased the good — and remembering, all at once, that the gap in the sky had once held a name.

The Verse-Blade’s raised blade trembled. And then his beautiful empty face cracked — really cracked, the glass of fifteen years shattering as ten million people refused, all at once, to see a weapon and insisted on seeing the boy — and the lost child came surging up from the bottom of him, drowning no longer, hauled into the light by a world that had finally chosen to see him true.

He dropped the blade. It rang on the stone. And the Verse-Blade — the Empire’s perfect champion, undefeated, unbeatable — fell to his knees in the center of the ring and clutched his own head and wept, and through the tears, in a small, cracked, human voice that had not spoken in fifteen years, he said: ”Mu Chen. My name. My name is Mu Chen. I remember. I— I’m Mu Chen.”

The whole world heard a stolen boy reclaim his name, and believed it, and so it was true, and so he was free.

And Xue Ningzhi pulled the seam.

I felt it — felt her power close on the Scroll and yank, the exact move that had unwritten the brightest name in the sky, the pull that frays a legend thread by thread until nothing’s left.

And it found nothing to unravel.

Because you cannot expose a fraud who has just exposed himself to the entire world. You cannot pull the seam of a lie that has already become the truth. The hidden thing she’d hunted — the secret she meant to detonate — I had detonated myself, in front of everyone, and turned it from a weakness into the realest, most beloved truth in the sky. There was no doubt left to thin me. No secret left to spill. Ten million people knew exactly what I was, down to the last fraudulent thread — and they loved me anyway, knowingly, freely, the way Tao Tao always had. And that love — the knowing kind, the kind the predecessor never had because they were only ever believed in — that love is bedrock. It cannot be pulled. There is no seam in a thing that is fully known and loved anyway.

Xue Ningzhi’s power closed on me, pulled with everything the Empire had — and I did not fray.

I rose.

What poured into me then was not the old kind of belief — not the wild accidental flood. It was something I’d never felt: ten millions and more people who knew the whole truth and chose me regardless, the deepest and most real belief there is, and it lifted me up past the cracking, past the straining, up and up and through — and I crossed it. The threshold I’d been pushed against for so long. I felt the rank of Storied open around me like a door I’d finally earned, not by deeds I never did, but by being, at last, truly known — and the whole sky blazed gold with a single line, the first one in this entire story that was completely, perfectly true:

✦ DING. ✦

”Lin Bo, the fraud who told the truth — known by all, and loved entirely, exactly as he is.”

Realm achieved: STORIED.

Belief: total. True. Unbreakable.

...Talent. You did it. You did the thing they could never do to the one before. You made yourself impossible to erase — by letting them SEE you. — Scroll

Mu Chen knelt freed in the dust, weeping his own name. The Empire’s seam-pull had broken against the bedrock of a knowing world’s love. And up in the high box, the pale hand at the rail went very still.

Then, for the first time in thirty years, the First Author spoke.

Her voice came down over the silent Arena — ancient, quiet, and unreadable, the voice of the one who writes the sky. She did not sound angry. She sounded, of all things, intrigued.

”A legend that cannot be unwritten,” she said softly, ”because it is true, and known, and loved. In a thousand years, I have never seen one.” A long pause, and the whole world held its breath. ”You have shown me something new, little clerk. And I do not yet know whether that makes you the most dangerous thing in my sky—” the faintest pause ”—or the only honest thing in it.” Another silence. ”I will not unmake you today. I find I want to understand you first. We will speak again, you and I, before the end.” The pale hand withdrew behind the veil. ”Win your match, demon-slayer. You’ve earned that much.”

And Mu Chen, the boy who used to be the Verse-Blade, looked up at me from the dust with his own eyes for the first time, and bowed his head, and gave me the match, and the heralds — stunned, breathless — cried it across a world that would never be the same:

”The champion of the Tournament of Ten Thousand Reputations — Lin Bo. The people’s demon-slayer. The fraud who told the truth.”

The Arena did not roar first few seconds.

Then Arena wept, and cheered, and roared, all at once — ten millions and more people who knew exactly what I was, and loved me anyway, and would carry that knowing-love to the ends of their lives.

I stood in the center of the ring, a Storied legend, a tournament champion, exposed and known and loved, with stupid thunder-trousers and a noodle pot waiting in the stands.

And I started, very quietly, to laugh, because it was the most absurd and the most true thing that had ever happened to anyone.
